On 31 December every year, a giant, glowing ball is lowered down a specially designed flagpole atop the One Times Square building in New York City at 11.59pm. This tradition of counting down to the new year has been around since 1904 and draws the attention of thousands the world over.
But how did the Times Square spectacle come about?
"Dropping the ball" to symbolise the passage of time was originally a maritime practice. The first "time ball" was installed in 1833 above England's Royal Observatory in Greenwich. This would drop at 1pm every afternoon as a signal to captains of nearby ships to set their chronometers accurately.
