Andrew Scawen is the proud owner and operator of Mitchell McCabe Menswear, located in the heart of South Melbourne, Australia. The store has been located at it’s current premises for 123 years, and we recently had the opportunity to go into the world behind the historic store for gentleman and those alike! The 8-minute short documentary was produced over a 5 month period, from August to December 2024 - and shares the story of how an incredible small business like Mitchell McCabe can have such a lasting impact on so many people over the stretch of generations.
Customers can find a variety of clothing pieces, accessories and footwear in a kaleidoscope of colours, shapes, patterns, sizes and styles. Ultimately, I set out to create this documentary because I simply love the store, it’s incredibly beautiful to both enter, and admire, when browsing the items available on display and especially the fixtures & fittings of the heritage store.
South Melbourne is a historic inner-city suburb just 2 kilometers south of Melbourne's CBD, known for its Victorian-era architecture, vibrant culture, and attractions like the South Melbourne Market and St Vincent Gardens. Originally called Emerald Hill, it has evolved from its working-class roots into a sought-after area with trendy cafes, diverse dining, and a thriving arts scene.

NIce to see how passionate the owner is. Great documentary.
Glad you enjoyed it, he really is
This was fantastic. It was so lovely to sit down with a glass of wine and watch, it had a lovely cosy and relaxing feeling. I'd love to see more of these stories.
A perfect watching experience it sounds like, glad you had a good time watching our film
Really enjoyed this mate, congrats!! Well put together and it has a very warm feel to it. Lovely shots too!
Menas the world coming from you mate, thanks for watching!
Perfect. I was distracted by how good it was but also immersed at the same time. I loved your priority of telling the story through your technical expertise, which is clearly visible in your framing and movements. Regardless of technical acumen you shared this man’s story in a captivating and truly meaningful way. I hope he does get a visit from Matthew. You’ll have to update us if he does!
Great freakin’ job.
Really appreciate you watching mate and the super kind words. He’ll be very happy you enjoyed the doc!
Beautiful shots, Kirk. Well done. Colours, lighting, and cheeky sound effects were on point. Was this with your new vintage lens? Love the character of it.
Cheers mate really appreciate you watching it through! No vintage lenses on this one, all on either my Sigma or Samyang lenses
Amazing as always!!
Cheers mate!
Such a beautiful piece of work Kirk. I can't believe I haven't been to this shop before - will be giving it a visit!
Thanks Charles, absolutely, well worth the visit!
Excellent documentary! That was a very nice watch.

I would like to ask you about the mic set which you have used if you kindly would share. Thank you ✨❤️
Thanks! Used the MKE600
Amazing work, came here from Reddit!
Thanks for coming by!
Here from reddit. Nicely done. All the b-roll stuff looks fantastic. The only critique I have is with the talking head portion which is of course the hardest part. First thing is - clean up the frame. Move those brown bags out of there on the bottom left, take the mannequin off the shelf so you can have his head in clean spot. On the wide I would have tried for a the next focal length up to tighten up the frame - don't need to see that changing room in the back left. I find there's too much fill spilling from the left onto the back wall behind subject and the color difference is jarring to me. All that aside, congrats on a job well done. These shops have really struggled since Covid and I know a few of them in the US that have shut down. Its a shame.
