Beautiful setup. I wanted to get the same desk but it’s very expensive. Ended up going with the Secret Lab Magnus Pro which is still pretty pricy but the cable management is second to none.

Why do monitors have to have such ridiculous names?

My one question for you is if you ever find yourself wishing you had a second monitor to use with your workflow, or having one ultrawide instead of the one studio display. I own a studio display myself, and I love it, but I have been thinking of buying this desk and preparing it for a bigger screen setup. What are your thoughts?

Does the Apple Studio Display still stand out in 2025? I'm a software developer and having a display like this would greatly help with text clarity, which is my primary goal, but I also do web design and have an interest in photography. Do the specs seem outdated by current standards (especially Adobe sRGB)? Thx. 🫡

Thank you for presenting this topic in a very informative and accessible fashion, you have a way of communicating your passion for cinema that is quite contagious ! Regarding Christopher Nolan's recent films he is a great contemporary director of course, but I find that due to the choice of his topics there are, in many of his films, "dark" or "somber" scenes shot in grey tones or literally in black and white (think of "Oppenheimer", "Inception", Batman films... ) which somehow, to me at least, cannot take full advantage of wide screen formats. Imagine what this format can add to films done by Michael Cimino, or films where cinematography is done by Vittorio Storaro. The wide screen formats (recent versions of Imax) can elevate films involving sweeping scenery, shot outdoors (or indoors, in visually rich settings), or in space, in the wild, or for films with epic historical themes, etc...

I live in Spokane, WA and we had a working IMAX in our beautiful Riverfront Park and you know what they did? Tore it down right before traditional IMAX became a coveted and profitable thing again. So sad.

Don't forget theaters, love pushing IMAX, but really are fakes.

This monitor can't be designed for the Mac when it's a 4K 32" display. The Apple scaling requires a 218 dpi screen & a 32" screen would have to be 6K to run efficiently with Mac OS. Yes the software scaling can be applied but it makes text either fuzzy or tiny & forces the CPU to work extremely hard to scale the entire system OS. It's way more logical to simply buy either a 27" 5K monitor that matches the Studio Display's 218 dpi or a 6K 32" model dong the same thing. So far I can only find about 5 matches on the market that can natively run the MAC OS without scaling. BENQ's new PD2730S coming in a few more weeks will do it, though I don't at what cost. I'm guessing it comes in about $300 below the ridiculous ASD but with the additional features you have to pay out the nose for on the Apple monitor. That would put it at $1300. Purchasing the $1500 Apple display with nano-texture anti-reflection glass & a full tilt, raise & swivel stand pushes the Studio Display up to about $2300. That is literally the same that it costs to buy a new M4Pro Mac Mini & spec it out with 64GB of RAM & add the better processor in the pro lineup. No way Jose...I'm not about to spend $2300 for a monitor that isn't even adequate to cover enough of the RGB color gamut to ensure color accuracy for photographs that print. I'll wait for the BENQ in the Q1/2025 roll out.

I saw Oppenheimer in imax 70mm at the Esquire in Sacramento, Ca and got to go into the projection room and see the giant film reel and the giant projector. The format was phenomenal, but the actual movie in my opinion was very long, dragged out, boring, I did not like the movie but loved the way I saw it. Saw Joker 2 in imax 70 in SF, CA, and that format was amazing too, giant ass screen, but the movie itself wasn’t the best either. Saw interstellar re-release at an imax dome theater and that blew my mind, awesome way to see a movie and now imax dome makes regular imax seem like a downgrade on my opinion, but I still appreciate the formats.

Can I do moving shots

Here from reddit. Nicely done. All the b-roll stuff looks fantastic. The only critique I have is with the talking head portion which is of course the hardest part. First thing is - clean up the frame. Move those brown bags out of there on the bottom left, take the mannequin off the shelf so you can have his head in clean spot. On the wide I would have tried for a the next focal length up to tighten up the frame - don't need to see that changing room in the back left. I find there's too much fill spilling from the left onto the back wall behind subject and the color difference is jarring to me. All that aside, congrats on a job well done. These shops have really struggled since Covid and I know a few of them in the US that have shut down. Its a shame.
