Well here it is. The whole story with numbers and data to show why I am changing for now and where I am going with it. Let me know your thoughts below.
Joey your face and neck look a lot slimmer. You look good. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for laying this out. I feel like a lot of WFPB doctors tell us how much protein we need to survive. I want to know how much protein I need to thrive as I age. This is the first time anyone on the channels I followed laid out the struggle of getting enough protein for those of us in our 50s/60s/70s. And thanks for showing us how we can address it for ourselves.
Such a helpful video! Thank you!
This is absolutely the basic info (not losing critical muscle) that WFPB ignores. Starch based, at least. Thank you for sharing this. Particularly as you age.
I have found that eating grains whole allows me to eat less calories because they are a lot more filling. I cook 3 or 4 cups of oat groats for the week (I’m hungrier in winter), I use bulgur, spelt or sorghum instead of rice. I Add them into soups too. I do eat quinua everyday too, but it’s not as filling.
Am I the only one who thought Joey is
about 40 years old??🤯
Yes
You are not alone! WOW! He could seriously pass for 40/40-ish.
Yeah you are lol
But he does look great for 60
60? Wow, he looks much younger.
Honestly, your new focus has finally prompted me to subscribe! I, too, am creeping up on geezerness, and it's just a fact that geriatrics need to up their protein to maintain muscle mass and prevent frailty. I'll be watching your new content with great interest. Cheers from the north side of town! 👋
I love the video. I love the format. I am with you on your journey! PS, you are not grotesque. I’m looking right at you! All I see is commitment, love of family and love of life. None of that is grotesque!
Gotta say, i find it interesting how in sync we are lol. I just discussed this very issue, 2 videos ago. How we dont know when we are losing weight if it is infact fat or muscle loss. Thanks for sharing your story and as always being honest and transparent. I love that you show the real ups and downs of a weight loss journey. All the best, I will be looking forward to seeing your results 😊
Stasia!! I wish we lived closer, we could be BFFs!!!! I think we are all on this journey and its best to share what works and what doesn't. I think you and I have been doing that for a long time.
@PlantBasedDads oh gosh I agree on all the above! haha. 🥰
I can’t wait to see your protein recipes. I’ve known for a while that I should probably get more in my foods. You do you!
one in a million video , this has been my problem from years , hoping it works for you and we can take inspiration as well, more strength to you
This is what I need!
Very interesting, thank you for sharing , I, too, need more protein but just love my plants, wishing you lots of luck 😊x
I am team Joey! You look great and i look forward to seeing the high protein meals. thank you!
What an adventure you are on! Watching!
Good on you Joey! Go for it!
I’m excited for your journey bc I have also decided to try a plant based high protein diet. I’m 54, post-menopausal and work night shift and can’t lose weight. I’ve been plant based for 2 years but eat too many carbs. The only way I ever lost weight in the past was a high protein shake diet.🧐. There are so many PB protein shake options but if you can show us how to eat real food - even better-I’m all in. 😀 I’m even willing to find a trainer to accomplish it. 👍🏻
Thank you, I needed this myself, I couldn't understand all these people talking about protein, but you put it to where I could understand. Wondering if you are going to a bodybuilder trainer in mesa in the corner part of the little plaza, because I went over there, and he was close that day. I will be watching, thank you for your time. J
I am in North Phoenix.
Thank for replying, thank you for your information and time,, God bless.J@@PlantBasedDads
This is exactly what I needed thank you for leading the way I have been vegan for 15 years for the animals also. But now I’m turning 60 also I’m having a hard time with some flab lol thank you for the recipes love them
Kate Hill also now sells a Greek yogurt vegan of course same amount of protein as regular Greek yogurt about 20 g… Unfortunately the taste did not suit my taste buds. I love the cashew yogurt not a lot of protein but it has a little bit of satiating fat if you add a scoop of protein powder in that it would be just the same, if you don’t like the taste of the Kate Hill
I have the kite hill for lunch very day with a sandwich. I mix in 40g of blueberries into it and it doesn't taste as bad. But yes, it taste horrible by itself. It is really hard to get here on Phoenix. When we see them, we stock up.
How about making a Chia pudding with regular soy milk and then adding protein powder I know it’s a concoction, but it’s really condensed super nutrient high protein add some nuts
All the best on your new chapter! Just remember that no part of you is “grotesque”. Be kind to yourself as you transform! We love you!
I came on to say the same thing. Bodies are bodies and they're amazing no matter what size!
3:39 you don't look 60 you look like many in their 50's
I can’t wait to see what you have created. I’m in the same situation as you. I’ve been eating plant based for over six years and I’m still overweight, even with eating healthy and exercise. I will be 70 in September and I wanna see a healthier me. Thank you so much for sharing your journey. I’m pretty sure I’m gonna be eating your new recipes. Hugs to you.
Congrats Joey. I am a bodybuilder , I am wfpb, and train folks. You are are on the right track. Many wfpb folks don’t understand the critical protein fact , ie it protects your muscles as well as grows them. I do use a very clean protein powder (vedge is good) to get to my 200g/day. I weigh 225 at about 12-15% body fat. Kudos for making this video and committing to achieving your goals FOR YOU. (And I am 60 too!!)
If Nimai calls me, i'll switch to Vedge too!!
Can you share info about training with you?
This was THE MOST valuable information for Vegans EVER! Thank you SO MUCH for this. I definitely will be watching your upcoming recipies. Thank you for your persistence. I’m struggling with the protein weight loss issue as well. Good luck on our journey.
I lost 22 lbs eating plant based, i am at goal weight now, and my BMI is in range …I am 72 but I have noticed I lost muscle, and was just researching about this yesterday
I think your doing amazing, look great, and will lead the way for us all
I'm 72 as well, and started higher protein WFPB SOS, adding organic pea protein powder, as I started working out with weights. Got buffed in short order--well worth it.
@@dennysmith5284woah...so many 72 year olds here.. great to hear that you're excited about getting healthier..
You lose muscle if you're not weight training and only doing cardio regardless of diet
Ye, gotta' do resistance training--muscles don't build themselves, and, much worth the effort. @@Healthnutpb
I just turned 70, am fully plant based gluten free. I’ve never had a weight issue but do weight resistance exercises 5 days a week as well as long walks to stay fit.
This is me, Joey. I'm 5'2 60 years old and weigh 165. When I hit menopause I gained weight and I became hypothyroid. I'm so glad you're sharing this especially those numbers!
You MUST check out Dr. Stacy Sims!
As a very short, elderly woman, I'm in the same boat as you with a BMR of about 1100 calories per day and a much worse percentage of body fat. Add to that fibromyalgia which makes working out excruciating at times. My diet has been all over the place but keto/carnivore were disastrous for me so I'm now going plant based and am hopeful. Looking forward to seeing what recipes you come up with for us oldies. Thanks.
As a senior female with FM and 5 years WPB, I’m 73 lbs less. I’m also hypothyroid. I have learned that Dr McDougall and Naturopathic practitioners like the TSH to be around 2 -2.5, when others allow it to be around 4. Thyroid really slows your metabolism
Can you take long walks?
Hi, you’re describing my story, too. Wishing you well on this journey!
That's great, joey. I had to quit some plant based food like white rice , noodles, and bread and eat more beans, red yams and squash to add more vitamins and minerals to my diet.
Yes, I am with you in this journey, 3 years on LFHC ans I can't see my muscle definition for my work on gym 😂
I wholeheartedly encourage you on this journey! Your kindness reigns through all you do!
One of the things I like most about you is that you keep it real. Thank you for this video, Joey, and I'm looking forward to the new high-protein recipes. 💚
Thank you! This is exactly what I need for my own health. I was told to increase my protein intake to 120g/day and lower my caloric intake. I just purchased Soy Curls, Chik'n, and Seitan last week. I need to start logging my numbers every day and weighing my food. I am looking forward to all of your recipes. They are going to be a great help to me. Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing your journey with us and what you are changing for your overall wellness.
Thank you for your transparency and clear, sensible approach to presenting this topic. You are an inspiration. There needs to be more conversation about weight loss and muscle gain in the plant based community. Thank you for highlighting this.
Absolutely! What works for one does NOT work for EVERYONE. Please don't let anyone deter you from your goal. I'm right with you. I'm so glad you're being so transparent. It's such a big help.
We are all individuals. You do what works for you. You are still vegan. You are still eating mostly whole foods. You have a specific goal and are working toward it. It's your journey you are sharing with us. Thanks for just being you!
Thank you for being so transparent. I remember your video when you went to 1200 calories a day - broke through the myth that all a person needs to do is go WFPB and massive weight will effortlessly drop off. I'm also an ethical vegan and looking forward to seeing how the higher protein change works out!
I'm right there with you Joey! Over 60, WFPB, healthier than my peers (and those younger), but down to the last 15 lbs to lose and only losing 1lb or less than 1 lb a month and working out with a trainer. Totally stumped as well. Thanks for looking for answers. It's fact that , that as we grow older our protien needs go up. Can't wait for next weeks video!
This is EXACTLY my story. I've been lifting weights for 15 months. I switched to high protein/lower carb vegan in September and lost 35#. I'm eating 1400 calories a day. Lower protein doesn't work for all vegans. I'm definitely putting on muscle. Vegan Gym is a lifesaver.
Love this! You ARE looking great. Please keep those high protein whole food plant recipes coming!
Be encouraged, Joey. Its good to experiment and find out what works for you. There's no crime here. I wish you every success. Thanks for sharing your story recipes with all of us. 🌺
I love watching your journey....on a similar one myself...almost 60...5ft. 1 inch post menopausal. Trying to gain muscle. and add protein. We got this..😘
This is exactly what my experience has been as well. I am so grateful for this podcast and I can’t wait to follow you on your journey. Fabulous job!
Thank you so much. I’m a 53 year old menopausal woman. I’m also trying to up my protein as I start doing more strength training. Studies show as we age we absolutely need more protein. Thank you, I am looking forward to your new videos.
I watch ALOT of plant based food videos, I mean ALOT! Mate, this was eye opening and something that ALL plant based food people need to know. Great information here, thanks for sharing!
Hey, Joey, I am with you all the way! Since first watching your video on August 29 2023 I’ve lost 44 pounds but in the last month hardly any weight. That is ok as my body adjusts. I am a 79 year old woman who averages around 30 grams of protein a day. I can’t wait for you coming videos showing me how to improve my protein intake. I think that it is important for me to add that I’m following your lead after consulting with my doctor who has so far approved my course of action. Thank you, Joey. You have shown me how to make healthy changes to the way I eat. I’m very grateful. Starch Solution all the way!
This is exciting. Great content. I would like to know how the trainer calculated the 140g protein. Is it different for women?
YESSSSS!! This is EXACTLY what I've been looking for. Higher proteins and 1300 -1400 calories. PERFECT!! Thank you ❤
wow you do not look 60!!!!
Thanks for your kind bluntness, honesty, and humor. This is a real struggle for me, too. I appreciate you. I am WFPB already and I work in healthcare; what you are saying "makes sense" to me. I am going to try to follow along with you - so grateful that it doesn't feel like I'm alone in my struggle. Congrats on the results you are getting! You look healthier and happier. :)
This is good, really good. I'm a meat eater but I've decided to go like 90 percent vegan (like I'll eat meat at my family gatherings etc) but I'm also body building (body mass reconstitution) :-)
I love this so much. I’m excited to follow along with you. I’m eating higher protein now as well because I am an endurance athlete. I have been WFPB for years. About 4 years ago I dialed things in and lost 20 lbs eating this way within a few months. I also lost a ton of muscle. I was very educated in this area but didn’t put the protein and muscle loss equation together until later. I gained back about 10 lbs when I became a runner, which I really probably needed and a lot of it is muscle. Now what I am doing is eating higher protein to support strength training and endurance sports. I’m 53, 5’3’’, small frame, 115 lbs. and I’m focusing this year on body recomposition, training smarter, eating more protein, and all within plant based living. So I’m super excited to be on this journey with you!!! Also, more protein helps with muscle recovery and bone health! Let’s do this!
@@acdcmiami My normal WFPB gets me about 40-50 and I add tofu, tempeh, TVP, protein pasta, and/or protein powder.
Thanks for sharing. As a starch solution/plant based eater myself, I also have struggled with this concept of including more protein in order to meet my physique goals. It was very helpful/encouraging to see your numbers.
Yay! Thank you so much. I just signed up with a trainer 4 weeks ago and I'm starting Simon Hill's Challenge 2/1. The first week is focusing on protein. He is plant based, but focuses on more protein. Like you, I have trouble getting enough protein on a whole food plant based diet and trying to stay in a calorie deficit. I have resorted to plant based protein shakes. I will be thrilled to learn some new recipes.
How did you get the tests done like your voz 2 to do the Simon Hill challenge. I wanted to do it, but don’t have the numbers to do the assessment
I already had the labs. My trainer had the grip strength gadget. For Vo2 max I used my heart rate monitor. I know it isn’t that accurate but will save getting the professional Test done after the 12 weeks. The Polar H10 is great for the Zone training.
You’re not alone in this situation by any stretch. I’m 65 years old and I’ve done the strict potato diet many times and I’ve been a vegetarian for 40 years and a vegan for 10 with plant-based changes over the past couple years and I’m still about 20-22 pounds overweight, with a body fat of 30+, so let’s see how this goes for you and good luck! Perhaps we will all learn something along the way with you that we have needed to know all this time, too. Meanwhile, I’m curious to know about the higher protein in nuts, like almonds and macadamias, and how they help out with the protein deficit. Or not.
Nuts are high in protein but very high calories as they are high fat. Legumes are the better choice, however if you want to do like Joey even they have too much energy.
I swear I was subscribed , well fixed it now
I think you are doing great! You prove that WFPB isn't always one size fits all. Some people need different approaches. Do what you need to get the results YOU are after.
Best of luck, Joey! The new plan seems to be working great for you, and you are still staying strong for the animals! ❤
As as new 60 year old what you are doing is really interesting,my weight isn't budging on a plant based diet so if it works for you, keep doing it Joey 😊
Maybe you already know about him (I tried to scroll through comments to see if someone else mentioned, but there are so many!), but have you looked into Robert Cheeke? He's a vegan body builder...while you obviously aren't trying to become a body builder, it might be worth looking into his books. I believe he has recipes that you could adjust for your calorie needs. Best of luck on your journey! It's inspiring.
I have been following him on IG for years. He is amazing
I support you 100 percent when you are not supported I know how it fills. I am open to learning new things thank you for putting this out there.
57 grams of protein is adequate to prevent death. Ideal for maximizing muscle growth while resistance training is 2.0g per kg of body weight.
More like 1.6kg
Thank you Joey, I need this too. Will follow very intensely. Looking forward to your new recipes. Blessings from BrisVegas. Yes, always about the animals, first and foremost.😀😘
How is your thyroid function? Low will reduce your metabolism.
I thought of going plant based, but I can't handle oxalates because of bladder issues.
I had all that checked and it is all good.
57 here, did Starch Solution and ate Whole Food Plant Based for a while lost a bunch of weight initially but started to gain it back. In one year gained back 20 lbs eating the same way and I have felt so hopeless! No way I am giving up vegan but I have to get my weight under control! Thanks for sharing this, it is just what I needed to hear!
Have you looked into the Nutritarian diet? I am following it - or at least the tenets espoused by Dr Fuhrman - and it is working for me. So far, anyway.
I needed to lose, friend told me about starch solution. I stuck to it a while but I gained weight! No loss! Upped walking and ten min at home floor exercises but still completely stuck-nothing! I feel like potatoes, rice etc work for others but not for me to lose weight. My Muscles are at a loss, i feel, and feel lower energy.. how does it work for others to lose weight, I dont know. Maybe some age related, hormone thing? In early 60s hypothyroid and had been somewhat low in vit D as soon as winter hit but working on that with supplement.
So MAYbe this is key-more protein! Id never go back to eating animals after a decades of being WFPB. Lookin g forward to your next videos. Unfortunately, I can’t eat Setien due to gluten…Thx for sharing!
@@jules9628I did the starch solution (HCLF) for a bit too and was following Plantiful Kikis and High Carb Hannahs Recipes. I felt good, only lost a little bit of weight but felt like I was still always hungry, even though I ate a lot of food. I now eat a vegan high protein diet and each meal keeps me full for much longer. So maybe try to incorporate more proteins into your diet for now on and see what happens.
So this is where you follow the plant based gym guys/weight lifters. They can help too. Simnett Nutrition. The Vegan Gym.
I already follow them. I have mentioned them in my last video including a link to the recipe I used from the Vegan Gym
I don’t usually comment but saw your video and felt the need to say thank you for being so honest about the protein issue! I am currently 48 and have been Whole Food Plant Base for over 4years now. It has Changed my life! I was able to reverse my Lupus because of my diet change and will never go back! Unfortunately, all the information out there is so confusing and never seems to address the protein issue. I don’t want to bore you with the details about my WFPB journey but want to mention that I did lose a lot of weight when I started but I think I was losing muscle as well. About 2 years into being WFPB I became weak, started being exhausted all the time, noticed hair loss and started gaining the weight that I lost(not what I wanted to happen). I met with a nutritionist/trainer found out my protein was too low and so were my calories. Looking at my height and the goal weight that I want to be at I have to take in about 120-130g of protein and taken in about 1300 cal. I need to also do less cardio and more weight training to increase my metabolism (due to the muscle I have lost). I am allergic to soy (which is tough being WFPB) so I have been supplementing with pea protein called “Naked Pea”. The only ingredient is peas but it has leucine, which I have learned is an important amino acid for muscle gain. One serving has 27g protein and 120calories. I put it in everything and have been able to meet my protein goals. I have been feeling so much better! I have noticed changes in my body and I am on my way to meeting my goals! I am stronger, have more energy, my hair is growing back and still Lupus free! Protein is important but you just need to pay more attention to it being WFPB. It can be done!😉 I wish more people addressed the protein in Plant base diets to meet everyone’s goals.
Thank you again for addressing the protein issue and I look forward to seeing you meet your goals. Stay strong!💪
Great stuff!! Thank you buddy. I needed to hear this. I have the same struggles. Thank you 🙏👍🏼.
Lets do this together!
You are amazing! I just joined the Vegan Gym. My journey starts today. All the hard work you're putting into the recipes is going to help me accomplish the food side of things so much easier. You are my hero! Thank you!
🎉 Congratulations on working with the team at The Vegan Gym! I really want to do that, too. 💪
@@MirandaHorger Thank you! They are amazing!
Great numbers! Congrats. Starch solution is not great for athletes doing a cut. In my case protein powder makes it easy to hit my protein target.
So true!
Would love a PDF of all your high protein recipes. I only see 4 on your website.
I don’t have the time currently to do the older recipes
Are there any vegan protein powders that you can mix with water or soy milk? I wonder if that would help you out a bit.
Yep, the one I am currently using. EarthChimp. I use it every day
Hi, I am a vegan fitness trainer and athlete. I follow vegan athletes and have learned a lot . One person you might want to consider following is Natalie Matthews(fitveganchef)she is a IFBB Bikini Competitor. She teaches you on YT how she keeps her protein high and calories low while cutting for her competitions. She also is an excellent cook and food prep. Btw lentils are much higher in protein than the other legumes you had mentioned. Stay positive! I wish you the best!🏋♀
I appreciate this. This is my story too. Was in good shape but wanted to go "clean" without any animal food. I have turned to mush. I know I have lost lean mass. I am looking forward to your journey.
I’m pretty much in the same boat as you! I am 65, trying to be Plantbased, told I need to eat more protein, but I don’t know how to do that. So I am really looking forward to seeing your videos! I wish you much success.
New Sub. Appreciate your honesty- I am 63 and put on weight these last 3 years. Trying 3day water fast and 4 days eating - it’s working for me (at the moment) and finding easy. Bought special scales that give you data etc. Sticking to it for another 4 weeks see if it continues to work. I loved the starch base Dr McDougall diet - should maybe look at it again.
Really liked this video and liked YOU and your delivery.
Thank you so much for this video. I now understand your point. Keep up the great work, I can tell in your face that you are more lean!
Been a high protein vegan for awhile and I consistently feel better getting at least 100g protein per day and everything else in balance (fats are not scary, females need fat for hormones). I'm more satiated, lean and energetic and can do all the activities that I like to do with no issue. I eat quite a bit more and stay lean due to higher protein, eating balanced meals and activity. Its the way to go if you want to improve your body composition. As we get older we have to switch things up. Good luck on your weight loss journey.
Thank you for this new way of looking at plant base...as I'm struggling with this so protein protein protein!
Am totally with you. The starch solution is fine for some, particularly those without a weight problem, but for others (like me) it is like spinning wheels. And somewhat instinctively, I always knew I wanted to lose weight, but not ever look as emaciated as many of the starch solution champions. I am 66 years old and finally finding my own way. Glad you have the courage to experiment with this and share it with the world.
I so appreciate you for being honest here. I'm in the same boat. My concern (for both of us) is the glyphsate and other toxins we could be exposed to with the meat alternatives and higher protein pastas that are not organic. Will you please talk about this more? Thank you for what you do, it means so much to so many.
Fella, is fasting feasible for you? Water fast? A dry fast?...of LIMITED duration...many of us incorporate these as healing modalities and fat loss, not just weight loss, is a given.
I have no interest in not eating.
@@PlantBasedDads
Which is your self-serving, limited way of characterising a well-recognised healing modality, so be it.
Oh my gosh, you are singing my tune!!!! I have finally come to terms with this reality in my life. I, too, have been on a long, self-discovery process. I look forward to hearing more of your journey, thank you!
Boy..you don't look old.. you look 45!!!!!!!
You don't look like a senior citizen..
Diet definitely has worked wonders for you...
I’m so happy you’re making these videos. I’m in the same boat you are. I didn’t get scanned but I’m pretty sure I’m the same. My calorie requirement is about 1375 so any recipe you can throw our way that is low calorie and high protein is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
PlantBasedDads, I was in a similar situation at 53 soon to be 54 I wasn't happy with the way I looked and needed to loose weight. I had been Vegan for 10 years, so was having the fake meats with the oil, chips and all the Vegan crap. Then about 3 weeks ago I decided to go totally plant based and do intermittent fasting doing 16/8, so eating from 12 miday until 8 pm. I have managed to loose 5.4kg or just under 12lb in 3 weeks, and the crazy thing is that I don't feel hungry. I have 2 main meals and then just before my eating window closes I have a few pieces of fruit.
Aloha Joey,
I m a 62 year old female, I have been plant based for 7 years. I'm overall healthy like yourself, but I too feel I have a little too much body fat, I think I eat enough protein daily, after watching your video, I realize I'm probably not eating enough protein has I need. I look foward to watching you preparing new high protein meals.
Mahalo Nui Loa from the Garden Isle..🌺🍍Elaine
so glad you're doing this!! I went from keto to vegan and gained 40 lbs. I didn't want to eat meat, so I stuck with it. Low and behold, I went back to eating meat, thinking that would help me shed lbs... it didn't. Thank you so much for your insight! Looking forward to upcoming videos
You got this!
Actually, I am in a somewhat similar situation. Only bc I'm not quite 5 feet, and am almost 61. I have to be mindful of 'making every bite count.' I would say that this need to be 100% perfect, pristine, only whole foods, no oil, sugar, salt can ultimately end up dissuading people from becoming or sustaining plant-based diets. I am in your FB group, tho I'm not on FB much, but I don't want to post in there when adding foods many have come to deem off the menu, incl. and perhaps especially the plant-based doctors. What people want to be aware of is that those doctors are helping people that have advanced disease states, and/or are very over weight.
A starch-based diet, too low in protein and fat can be counter productive to fat loss. Don and I have been on this treadmill for sure! Also, studies show that inclusion of those so-called processed foods like TVP can have positive health benefits. It's sad to me how many vegans now demonize these foods, once considered great options for vegan and vegetarian diets back in the 70s during the early years of the natural foods movement in our country!
I suggest checking out Vegan for Life by Jack Norris, RD and Virginia Messina, RD. They dispel many of those myths, and discuss the importance of increasing protein, not only as vegans but as we age. A very informative book. Look forward to seeing your results. ~Tracy
Thank you from Ireland.im exactly where you are. Id love a trainer like yours... Actualyy id love a scan like yours. Whats it called? Again thanks Joey. Y look great ❤
Appreciate this - been looking for a higher protein WFPB-ish diet for my husband and me. I like that you are focusing on protein. I can't find a lot of that on the WFPB TH-cams I often go to. I also like that you are not trying to bulk up like a lot of the high protein vegan TH-cams seem to focus on. Protein and losing weight or maintaining weight are important and little attention is paid to the issue, so thank you for doing this. I also like the one-on-one talk you did to explain things. I look forward to seeing some recipes and hearing more!
This was very informative Joey!
Thank you! Keep on . . .
Just found you. I am 73 & WFPB for a few months now…I am losing but noticed I am losing muscle too…so, I have been concerned of my protein under-consumption for a while - thanks for this.
Yep all of this makes sense. I've also sorta been following the Starch Solution but I can tell for me it's not enough protein for me (I'm also trying to put some muscle)
I plateau on the Starch Solution after 1 year. What's working for me is eating less cooked food and incorporating more leafy greens and salads in the day. Mainly getting carb sources at the back end of the day and generally from root vegitables. I drizzle Lemon and ACV on my greens and my salad. I have a large sandwich box of leafy greens In a morning. I eat a serving of berries everyday to. I got for chia and flax, occasionally drop them out and have a serving of nuts. If I rotate my carbs it's generally more optimal carbs like Sweet potato, white potatoes, Rice, Beans, then less optimal (rarely)oats pasta.
So glad I found your channel. I think I may have some of the problems you are up against. I am 62 and female. I am only 5'1". I can not lose weight at all,. I don't have much to lose at 118, but I have way too much body fat. I think my metabolism in non-existent from working 3rd shift and going 24 hours at a time without eating. I am also vegan going on seven years. Somedays, I am lucky to get 20 grams of protein. I did the Vegan Gym's calculator and it suggested I have about 1446 calories and 53 grams of protein. I have recently semi-retired and have started to workout and do some light weight lifting. Going to increase my protein intake and watch the calories more. I am not a big eater due to losing most of my taste in 2020 due to covid so will really have to work at adding more protein. I also do not take any prescription medications, knock on wood. Lol
Love this, just started going through menopause and it was suggested I eat more protein - and like you have done vegan whole food but maintained a significant amount of weight. I'm excited to start this journey with you and wish you all the best!
Thank you for sharing your story. I will be 59 this month. Due to an unknown illness I went form 189lb. to 112 lbs. in less than a year. My doctors and nutritionists kept stressing that I eat more meat and dairy. I tried that and it just made me sicker. I am slowly becoming plant based. The only animal protein I eat is fish about once a week. I have no muscle mass anymore and it shows in my weakness. I am SOOO looking forward to your recipes! I am not concerned about calories, I need to gain weight as well as muscle.
I’m in a similar boat. My BMR is only 1403. Did you know about Explore Cuisine Black Beans Spaghetti? It’s only ingredient is organic black soybean flour, and it has 25g of protein in a 180 calorie serving. Also, spirulina is very high in protein, but I haven’t quite figured out how to incorporate it into my diet.
I had my rmr measured by a breath machine with a mask sitting still in a chair .. i’m 5-10 and my rmr was 1520 … my bmi was also 30 (I was 220 lb) I went plant based and run 3.5mi/day and dropped 70lb to get to 155lb. I’ve since added another 10lb as people were telling me I looked like a concentration camp survivor. I didn’t count calories .. I just quit eating high calorie crap ..including bread. I’ve now added an extra 2.5mi run in the evening .. so basically10k/day .. and that’s enough to really drop pounds .. now I’ve also, added an hour of CrossFit (strength training) at noon each day. I’ve never counted protein I’m 65 so, a similar age to you. Running 10k/day burns around 600kcal … I’m unsure about the CrossFit calorie burn .. 8m guessing 150kcal ? So .. I’m roughy stagnant (weight wise) at 1500+600+150 + (25kcal * 12 “moving” per hour) == 2550kcal … however, I doubt I consume more than 1900 … good luck … anyone that says your not “whole food Is an idiot … tofu and soy milk are processed foods … so are all the vegan nut butters …I do find it odd that I’m not losing weight considering the exercise amd only eat a better bowl for breakfast/fast and a plant based whole food dinner … apparently one’s body adjusts … who knew
Joey I found your channel just a few days ago by accident? by luck? by Divine Intervention? I share your story and I’m looking forward to seeing your new recipes. I’m trying to hit +150 grams of protein and maybe hit 1700-1800 calories.
One comment on the statement „Eat less calories than you burn“:
You can stop worrying about the eating side of it, if you just burn more. Then, you can go beyond the 1300 mark and still lose weight!!! Problem solved.
How: just walk the stairs instead of taking the elevator, do all those things outside of the gym, than makes your body move!
Pure pea protein powder packs in 30 grams for only 140 calories, just something to consider. I know it’s often maligned by WFPB adherents, but I think it’s nutritious and very helpful for this effort.
Appreciate you doing this. I have to move from WFPB 100% to some kind of...something different just for now. I started taking GLP1 medication to lose weight. When i do meet the protein goals of 100g + I lose more weight. When I dont, it is a very small amount of weight. Seitan is a no go for me unfortunately (Celiac). I will be returning to WFPB 100% when I am done with this season, as well.
🎉 I could hug you for this video!!!! Thank you!❤ What scan did the trainer use? I need to find one near me.
I'm with you for this, I'm packing on the wfpb pounds at 51, meno, etc.....I need more protein and I need help! Can't wait to see the recipes. Thank you for doing all this work, so appreciate you!
Definitely keep up the high protein. Surprised he only put you on a touch 7% calorie deficit. Generally 10-20% is the norm for someone who isn’t morbidly obese. Cycle that 3 weeks per month with one week per month back up to your basal metabolic calories, then continue the cycle 3 weeks on and 1 week off. On your week off keep up with the Whole Foods, high protein goal. Not a YOLO week off
Joey you should consider supplementing with vegan friendly Perfect Aminos! At 62yo I take 4-servings spread thru out day, gives me 120g highly absorbable protein and only 2-calories per serving. I gain weight easily just by looking at a protein shake, but having great success since I started taking Perfect Aminos. Best wishes :-)
