  • It was big news in 2023 when the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway received final approval to replace its bridge over the Missouri River between Bismarck and Mandan North Dakota. This unique bridge was completed in 1882, and has four large piers with three spans. Although it’s a beautiful bridge, it is unable to accommodate all modern rail cars. BNSF intends to complete the new bridge by 2026, just north of the old one. Work has already begun on the new bridge, and the old one will continue to handle the traffic until the new one is complete. See the original bridge in action and how the new construction was progressing during the summer of 2024.

Looking at the amount of activity at the construction site, it will take them 100 years just to build the bridge.

This may be the most historic railroad bridge in the United States. Citizens of Bismarck (on the east side of the river and bridge) and Mandan (west side) have strongly lobbied BNSF to donate the old bridge so that the communities can build a bike and recreation path between the two towns. Without any good reason offered, BNSF has denied this request, opting to tear down the old bridge once the new bridge is completed. That's quite a slap in the face of North Dakotans, delivered by a large corporation that has greatly profited from businesses within the state.

Too bad there are too many lawyers in this country!! THIS is why BNSF is not hearing what the community says! THEY ARE TIRED OF BEING SUED!!!

@@_Boregard_Rippy_ They would have saved the money to remove the old bridge, which is going to be very, very expensive due to requirements not to contaminate the water during the process. It will take a lot of care not to do so, especially when removing the huge concrete and stone piers.

It may be that BNSF needs the ROW for future expansion

Did you have a chance to see the “high tressle” bridge just north of Valley City, North Dakota?

The "maintain speed" is BS as they have to slow for the sharp S curve on the Bismarck side and the yards on the Mandan side.

I hope they can use the old bridge for Rails to Trails. I know they are expensive to maintain but don't need to bear heavy weight anymore.

That trestle is impressive! Sad it’s going to be taken down and not left up for historical reason.

I'm not a bit surprised considering who owns BNSF.
