We bought our camper and a few weeks later out 3 year old was diagnosed with leukemia. We are a homeschooling family, so we moved to camper school most days so we could enjoy the camper. (He's fine and 21 years old now.)

I was wondering if you and Tom could address on an upcoming video, how to organize and minimize all the house maintenance items. By this I mean things that are left over from plumbing projects, electrical projects etc. We will need them again at some point but live in the suburbs so we don't have outbuildings, etc to store them.

My husband dated my sister as well! They became engaged but wound up breaking up. At the time of the break up, I danced a few happy dances and then swooped in and snatched him up! Next month we will be celebrating our 38th wedding anniversary. When he asked my Dad for my hand in marriage, Dad told him, "You've been through 2 of my 3 daughters. It ain't going to be 3!" So, 38 years, 2 sons, 6 grandchildren later..things have worked out so wonderfully; exactly the way they were supposed to! Don't want to sound weird, but I am very grateful that I "got him" in the end! I'm sure Tom and Dawn are, too!😊

I know I’m late watching this, but you just mentioned moving to a new house, I am currently packing to move back into our house that we have been renovating for 8.5 months. The majority of our items have been packed up the whole time. While watching your channel I have been packing up the items we have been using, and I am purging! Now I’m stressed about moving and going thru all the STUFF that’s been packed up. But as I unpack I plan to go thru it. I do shop to escape the house, which makes things worse, so no more! I really appreciate all you advise, really enjoy your channel❤️

You are so right about how the camping experience translates to home life. My husband and I had a trailer when the boys were little, and it was great for then, but now we have a slide in camper that we use with our F350. The thing is that every time we got home, I'd realize how little we actually needed or used and it really motivated me to declutter.

I enjoyed hearing how you guys met. The question, 'How did you meet?', is one that I love to ask couples who have been married a long time. In a strong supportive relationship, the spouse, who talks the most, starts telling the story, then they are interrupted by the other, who fills in missing details. This made my day! Even though I wasn't able to watch the live podcast, I thoroughly enjoyed watching this. Thank you!

Hi! Me again about camping. We’ve been married 36 yrs. and camping 32 years. You mentioned you had precooked meat. I recommend, especially with the size of your family, to precook any meats you can before the trip and freeze in ziplocks. I also store everything I can in the frig in ziplocks. Saves tons of space and no clean up. Just toss the bags when done. I also recommend finding easy meals you can throw into a crock pot. Also, we don’t use our shower either but use it to store drinks, water bottles, large items not able to keep outside, etc. I keep, in the camper, an expandable/collapsible drying rack to keep outside for towels, bathing suits, etc.

My family has teachers going back several generations, and that includes pre-Civil War when an 8th grade education and passing the exam was enough. When we homeschooled in the early 1990's, when we started, I had a severely asthmatic 8-year-old and 3 preschoolers, and my husband's failing health put us on a disability pension. We could not afford a full pre-pared curriculum. Luckily, he could already read well, so we could focus on what he read. We had something for math that we reused with the younger children, and their grandmother bought them math workbooks as they got old enough. (Those were very helpful with our dyslexics. Less copying problems, less opportunity for reversals.) But mostly, knowing that so many previous generations had been school teachers, including great-grandparents in the 1800's, we focused as they did on learning the 3 R's, Reading, Writing, and arithmetic. Those were the basic tools needed to learn and explore everything else, which eventually they could do on their own. When homeschoolers talk about "project learning, it just means the kids get to pick an area of interest and really explore it to their hearts content, concerned only with "does it make sense to them", do I understand it. Can a write a report, or a letter to grandma telling her what I've been doing. When we eventually sent them back to school, and were "threatened" by the principal that they would have to be tested and accept the grade the test ranked them at, our eldest skipped forward a grade. In his early years, they used his severe asthma as an excuse to hold him back (August birthday). The second one lost a grade, but I suspect that might have happened anyway because her dyslexia was so severe, and I didn't feel I was adequately able to deal with it. Now, with Internet as a resource, I might make a different choice. Anyway, I thought I'd just mention that in terms of curriculum. The three R's matter most. The rest can be gleaned very well from a rich environment where kids can do stuff. It's like playing outside with nature instead of having too many toys. It also allows them to take ownership of their own learning, which you really want them to be able to do independently by high school anyway. When you see the old Eight grade graduation tests, that were phased out in the mid1930's most places, most people are amazed at how "difficult" they are. A lot of today's high school students couldn't pass them. I think a great deal of the difference then was that kids only expected to be there 8 years (more than their grandparents), and expected to use that education for life, contributing to their sense of personal sovereignty early on. To me, that was the biggest benefit of home schooling. Also, we never needed more than 3 hours per day to complete everything. So much time gets wasted in school administration tasks needed when you have so many kids together, and frequently not on the same page.

Hi Tom and Dawn. I too am a Christian and my husband is a manual machinist. We have bought a couple of older houses and fixed them up by ourselves mostly. We also live in Minnesota, but we live west of the Twin Cities rather than south like you. We too have four kids and I homeschooled them preschool through high school. You are gonna love homeschooling. You may or may not be aware, but there’s a difference between homeschooling and doing school at home. I’ve learned so much from you about minimalism, I would be more than happy to help you starting your homeschool journey. I have helped many many families with this and I would be more than happy to help you in any way that I can. I already feel like we’re sisters.

Totally agree with the traveling with kids thing. I have had friends look at me weird when I say I love traveling with my kids. I explain that my kids do better when we can pay them more attention, and without the normal household responsibilities, we pay much more attention to them on trips, and it's positive attention.

We homeschool and yes - the together time is the best part! The sibling bonds formed are amazing. And if any of the kids' struggles relate to reading at all, I recommend the book Equipped for Reading Success - the author is THE leading expert on HOW the brain learns to read, what things can go wrong in the process, and how to fix it. I know you are fascinated by the way our brain works so I think you'd really get a lot out of it. My daughter is dyslexic and I've been so intrigued to learn all about the neuroscience behind reading - not to mention being able to tailor her education to get her up to near grade level despite severe dyslexia.

Have a question....I thought minimalism was to get rid of extra stuff, pair down to what use, need, not lot of unused stuff, hardly any. Then BE CONTENT with what have. Buy only when need, break something, or need an extra (for camping...ha!).
You guys are always doing projects, remodeling, showing things buy or make. Yeah, I get doing crafts or sewing, but you still buy and do so much.

Thank you for telling us about Cook Once Eat All Week. It started by helping me when I was at the grocery store and saw marked down meat. With my Kindle book, I can just change my grocery list right there in the store. Now, I have to see what meat is actually in the store!

Look into The Good and The Beautiful for homeschool curriculum! It is so simple and easy to use. We do foster care and the curriculum allows us to focus on other things God has for us besides homeschooling. (Currently 4th and 9th grade.)

You are soooo right about the toys ! Boredom is so valuable to develop ideas and creativity - space is so useful - but burning their creations, I have a Problem with deciding, what they might cherish later on (still have to work on my minimalism in that regard 🧐). My Girls love baking at the moment, moving to leave the kitchen a mess, so we are working on putting things back where they belong... the cakes are hilarious 🧁 🍰

My best childhood memories are of the talent shows, play school, mystery searches we'd create among my 4 siblings. Imagination is the best to. My parents would put on an instrumental LP and we kids would draw whatever the music inspired us to do.

3 tips for choosing homeschool curricula:
    1) research educational philosophies to figure out which one or combination of them you lean towards. That way you have a better starting point of which curriculums to look at or not.
    2) research curricula geared towards the learning challenges your kids might be dealing with. That will also help steer you toward options that might be a better fit.
    3) relax and enjoy your kids. 😉

Great video! Sorry I missed it live. Glad the bales didn’t cause any accidents. I was behind a truck once that lost bales off the back and I was driving behind them. Definitely practiced swerving that day!! Hugs! Glad you made it home safely from the camping trip!

Enjoyed watching! Thought on a good homeschool curriculum that can work for teaching preschool through 5th grade together while keeping it simple is the Peaceful Press, the Playful Pioneer Curriculum they have is great! They have others as well. You might want to check them out.

Hi Dawn and Tom. I'm not a minimalist ( you could see that as soon as you entered my house) but I like the encouragement to Simplify and declutter. I'm definitely doing the onion method. I have just finished, last year, homeschooling my children when young then doing Distance Education with them to get them through High School with Certified academic records for 15 years!!! It's gone fast and slow lol. My now youngest son (18) is doing further study which I am now excused from. 😀I work part time in my daughters little gift shop. I love watching your videos and I love that you challenge me. I'm finding a nice balance between having too much but still enjoying having my things on display and being willing to take the time to manage them. It's an interesting journey! God bless you both. Ann from Australia

We homeschool five girls between 3 years old and 9 years old. We use a fantastic curriculum which you can teach children all together in what they call cycles. It is My Father's World. We have used it for five years and love it. It is very simple for the parent and teaches all different learning styles.
I also didn't want their teacher to have more time with them than I do...we purposely waited 8 years after getting married before having babies so that way we could get our business started (four years before babies) and I could quit my career and be a work at home mom (two years before babies). There has never been a single day I have regretted homeschooling our girls.
We also have been tempted to buy a pull behind camper for vacations. If we did though, we would try to use it for schooling. We have a dedicated school room in our house but mostly just use our dining room table.
Yes...as someone said in your live chat they key to happy homeschooling is simplicity.

I met my husband because my cousin ( his coworker) set him up on a date with my sister. They dated a few months and then broke up. A short while later he started coming by my work at a fast food chicken restaurant. He doesn’t eat chicken! I eventually agreed to go out with him when he stopped traffic to ask me out one day. We’ve been married 37 years this June! 😊

Maybe you can do a video or video series about minimalism and small kids / babies? (Maybe with Diana). I’ve got 2 under three now and I’m thinking I’m not done with babies yet. So much baby stuff and different toys I have. I feel like they need more than bigger kids since they can’t make stuff yet out of cardboard or something. (My baby just eats cardboard.. not the best idea..)

I used to be extremely frugal too and therefore buy lessor quality items that we would then have to replace often. My husband would say, “we’re too poor to be this cheap!”
