The better I get at street fighter, the more I understand what I'm actually seeing during these pro matches, and the more it blows my mind, the things these guys can do. Like they're playing at such a high level it's absolutely ridiculous.
I still find it absolute amazing that these guys have so much stuff on their mental stack and yet can still recognize in a moment, "Oh, I saw he's pressing medium punch... I remember a punish for that!" All those OD DPs out of AngryBird... Honestly I really enjoy when players do commentary and breakdown on their matches... please some of that!
That's not what the thought process is like. 5 mins before the match, he's already thinking, "Oh I'm fighting VxBao, I wanna try that stMP punish I saw." Punk also plays in a way that plays to his strengths for whiff punishing. He'll often just space himself a certain way and do nothing when he thinks you're likely to press, those situations can start and end, but during that time, he's always hyper-focusing on predicting and reacting so you can whiff punish, when you play like that, it also becomes easier to whiff punish. Also, what I mean by "start" and "end" in this context is that if Punk (or whoever) sees an opportunity to be more aggressive in neutral, then their whiff punishing ability would significantly drop off, because it's no longer what you're focusing on. So that punish is godlike, but the way you described it, you'd make yourself believe he's a god and you can't even do it, which isn't true. There's "tricks" and ways to make this type of shit easier. Though Punk does seem to have more talent for it compared to his peers.
@@satsu3098 i mean neutral comes pretty natural for a high level fighting game player, let alone pro level. If you have strong fundamentals (of which Punk's are insane) then the mental stack doesn't really come into play because Punk is always spacing himself properly.
That's not really how it works. If you know the matchup then you know your opponent's buttons and the right spacing for them. For example, Big Bird plays Nuckledu and knows typically in neutral, Guile's best button is cr mk, so staying just outside that range allows him to whiff punish. Guile's other buttons aren't gonna reach as far so Big Bird wouldn't be like "Oh he whiffed cr mk i remember a punish for that" - it's just second nature to whiff punish using Marisa st HP because using other Guile buttons when the opponent is just outside his cr mk range wouldn't make sense and that's the button that's gonna lead to the most damaging combo for Marisa. Just like what Punk did to vxbao. both JP's cr mk and cr mp are safe on block, but standing inside of cr mk makes it a slightly higher counterhit risk for vxbao to push cr mk so he'd opt for the faster cr mp. it sounds more complex than it really is. Like the drive rush jab with Cammy. If bao presses those mediums he's likely to get counterhit or whiff punished since the drive rush freezes the screen for a split second. But if he presses nothing, Cammy is immediately in AND +2. Point being, there's a part of you that already knows the logical buttons for the opponent to push. That's why high level players or pros call a lot of lesser players "random" because the things they are doing don't make logical sense. When you're at a certain level you expect players to play with some type of understanding and you operate accordingly, but imagine going into a boxing match and your opponent starts kicking lol.
I love these team videos so much. Ridiculously clutch wins and fantastic fights. This is almost as good Street Fighter as Bigbird losing his mind in the background of Angrybird fights.
One thing I love of about the FGC is it's actually the most diverse and real diverse community. Most other communities are fake segregated but only in the FGC is there a real connection.

@ameer8966 nope. It's called invulnerability frames. Some level 3s have more invul frames as others. Marisa, cammy, jp, and luke travels the furthest. That's what happened there.

You don't have to jab drive rush to whiff punish (3 bars is a bit much against JP of all chrs), I feel regular drive rush into jab feels more consistent but to each their own ig.
They both are options for different situations.. High level Tournaments you have to hide your intentions. IMO regular DR into whiff is a lower version Tech of what punk did.
he probably whiffed jab then canceled the recovery with drive rush, i dont think you could react with raw dr jab there. expensive but getting jp into the corner asap seems pretty nice.
