One of the best fearures of old XJ/XK8 Jags was how quiet and sophisticated they were, so relaxing to drive, still having pace and power. This current trend of needing so much noise it must be fabricated, is just stupid.

    • @nickwheeler8231

Myself I've found that it's always quicker and easier to remove the engine the same way the manufacturer installed the engine. If they installed it from the bottom then it usually comes out much easier that way. My 2013 focus ST had a sound symposer that did the same thing. I ended up removing the diaphragm and filling the entire block with jb weld and removing the hose from it. The diaphragms we're known to burst and cause a major vacuum/boost leak.

for those watching. I've removed the engine and transmission in my 2017 F-Type S and it's actually pretty well designed to make that happen easily. disconnect exhaust, drive shaft, coolant lines and fuel lines etc., and then disconnect two big wiring connectors. Then remove 8 big subframe bolts and out it drops just clean as anything. Goes back up nicely as well. The expensive part is the refrigerant for the A/C and getting that recharged.

The 2014-2017 Chevrolet SS (Holden Commodore) comes with a "kazoo tube" that pipes intake sounds into the cabin under heavy acceleration. It's a feature that is so commonly deleted that RDP actually sold a custom block off plate to cover the firewall hole resulting from removal. An electronic system at least allows you to turn it on/off.

I remember that one time I was putting an engine in a Ford fusion 4 cylinder. Service data said out the bottom. Looked easy enough to me. Old engine came out easy enough just had to remove the harmonic balancer. Removed it on new engine and it went right in. Rolling engine over to do the torque converter and it clunks. Valves hitting piston. Here a lot of Ford 4 cylinder engines are not keyed and when I loosened the crank pulley I also loosened timing gear. Lesson I learned was follow service data it's usually for a reason.

... well, it _is_ a Jag, and that does kinda go right along with their crazy way of doing things. Hell of a system just to get sound inside though. I agree with you - want noise? Roll down the window. My 20 Lexus RC 350 has a similar part on the intake tubing. It still creates sounds through the speakers but it first ports the intake noises towards the firewall to amplify them. Except the system on the Lexus is much more simple, I don't really think it can fail. I'll admit it sounds pretty good. There is actually a slider on the dash where you can turn up or down the volume of the sounds which is independent of the driving mode. You can put it in Sport but still turn the slider all the way off. I like the way they set it up.
The first car I had that had this system was my Fiesta ST and it was completely mechanical. It was a pipe on the intake tubing that was ported into the car. This one could actually fail and create a leak. I eliminated that system because with an aftermarket intake and charge pipes you already got ridiculously loud intake noises.

It's still got the resonator, and I presume SOME of the exhaust still goes through the muffler, but it gets louder without being obnoxious. Put it back in regular mode and it quiets right up. Let’s face it: the whole drivetrain packaging development exercise involved a full wheelbarrow of parts and a very long run-up. I despise fake sounds; the worst example I’ve experienced is the Mk7 Golf R which sounds inside like a Subaru boxer up to about 3k rpm and then what it would sound like after a legislation delete up to the redline. There is no reason to fit fake sound to a convertible. Legislation allows a noisy flare on startup; then keep it sweet & mellow up to moderate load; then open things up at higher load. My brother owns a contemporary Merc SLK350 and Merc nailed that strategy perfectly; it’s a joy to drive and listen to in all the situations. JR, I agree that leaving that noise simulator complexity enhancer out is the way forward. This is why custom exhaust fabrication shops exist 🙂

I suspect the coolant leak is the outlet pipe, the black plastic tube at the front of the intake valley, if you remove the two T30's you'll probably find the bottom of the pipe stuck in the block

Ford put something similar on the Mustang GT to compensate for the super quiet OEM exhaust system. Never understood choking off the natural sound and installing extra parts to produce fake ones.

BMW/MINI do it in a much more simple way. Pipe from air box direct to bulkhead/fire wall so you get the induction roar in the cab. Just a two inch box pipe , a small air filter bolted into the firewall.

Just need the right combo of powertrain and exhaust 😁 Have a solo catback on my G8 GT (one muffler where the resonator was), and it's fine at highway speeds. Get it over ~2500rpm and it starts to make some noise. The car is insulated pretty well though, never knew how loud it really is until I drove behind it.

Can the symposer be blocked off or bypassed without removing the supercharger on an F-Type? I ask because apparently mine went bad (cracked) and is causing a vacuum leak which is making the car idle rough. The dealer said it's a 7 hr. job at $242 per hour, plus about $300 for a new symposer. Seems ridiculous for a part that's not even necessary.

Great video as always JR, you always make repairing cars fun and interesting. I absolutely love this model Jaguar, and it is chuckle worthy when engineers come up with crazy ideas to solve simple problems. I for one don't have a problem with piped in engine audio, I suppose if it were a basic ride with subpar engine sound, it may actually be enjoyable. However, this is a Jag and they sing beautifully, in fact that is the best part about this car. I'd simply put an aftermarket exhaust system on it, and block off the provisions for the Symp-poser. (Simp + Poser lol)

Ford did this also with the european focus rs mk2 and the fiesta st. System that will give some sound in the cabin but a lot of issues with the car. Boost issues and errors. I did have it also with my rs mk2. There is indeed a diagram inside and it is tearing apart.
