    What a treasure your husband is . For doing what he did to get you those book ends. When I watched your video and saw that you went home without them . I was sad for you. Because I knew how beautiful they would be in your home. He needs an extra hug .❤

      What a wonderful husband you have and what a wonderful home. Here on the UK I live in a small but very pretty 17th century flint cottage and like you I love to collect special items!!!.
      I sometimes think I have over done it but then I watch you and get inspired as to how I can use them in different ways to look less cluttered.
      Thanks Sherry xxxx
      My favourite was the coal shuttle I have a repro one which at the moment holds faux flowers but yet again you have inspired me to change it out.😊

    I love the way you framed the Lincoln book cover. It really looks good on your Lincoln shelf and that log cabin jewelry box just finished it off perfectly. Great finds Sherry. Although I now live in New England, I grew up in Aurora, Illinois. I've been to Galena on many occasions and absolutely love it there. It's SO charming!!! I love the Abraham Lincoln photo in the frame. He's one of my favorite Presidents (And would probably be turning in his grave if he saw what Illinois is like now). I really enjoy your video's.....

    Thanks for taking us with you on this very special shopping trip but I can tell that you need to have someone like me 😆to follow around behind you and pick up the items that you love, yet put back on the shelf. When you get ready to check out, you can revisit all the items in your bag and then it's easier to make a decision on what to leave behind. The ability to give each item a special place to shine in your home is clearly your superpower! SO glad that you now have the beautiful bookends. Thanks again, Sherry.

    I'm a Lincoln fan. I grew up in Illinois and learned a lot about him. We also share an important date. April 15, 1865 was his last day on earth and 88 years later on that date I was born. So I've always felt a connection to him.
    I've been to Galena so long ago. The streets look the same, even after almost 50 years.
    I love seeing how you style your home and all the pretty things in it. Thanks for sharing with us! ♥️♥️♥️

    • @CanterburyCottage
      @CanterburyCottage  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I am currently reading Bill O’Reilly’s book “Killing Lincoln.” I think you would like it (especially because of your unusual connection). I did not know all of the details of his assassination and have been surprised by a number of things. For instance, Wilkes and his co-conspirators had planned on killing U.S. Grant, too. The Grants were supposed to join the Lincolns in the state box at the Ford Theater that night. However, Julia Grant wanted to get home to her children (and she didn’t like Mary Lincoln), so they left town early. It makes you wonder, what would have happened if Grant had been in the box, too.

    Thank you Sherry for taking us along. I was born in Illinois in Elgin. Lived in many of towns till I was 5 or 6. I do remember my daddy always taking the train into Chicago for work. I haven’t been back to Illinois in many years. I think the last time I was 12 to visit my grandparents. They lived at the time in Arlington Heights. I certainly wouldn’t mind going back just to visit those antique stores 😀. I just love to go to those kind of stores. I vision in my head of how those people who once owned like that needle point chair or at that beautiful sofa n the conversations spinning around the room. Or seeing that tea pot n the hostess serving them tea in her new China cups. I could go on n on of all I would see in my head. You found some great pieces but I have to say I too love the book ends. How sweet your husband was in getting them for you. He knew how much you loved them n how disappointed you were when you got home n they weren’t there. He’s a keeper 😊. Really enjoyed the video. I had a lot of wishful thinking of what I would of loved to have.

    I had so much enjoyment from watching this video. It was educational, informative and so much fun. I felt like I was on the trip too. A lot of memories came to mind also. I went to school in the 60's and early 70's and the hard wood floors were the same. The gymnasium floors were so shiny and we had wooden bleachers to watch the games. Antiques were such a part of my home life as my parents owned a store. My Mom had a small room for her crafts like the beaded handbags. Suede vests with fringe beaded and so long. It was the hippy ear, woodstock and all. Getting to your treasued things that you bought. My favorite is the photo of Lincoln and I love how you styled it all. Thank you for sharing this Sherry. It really was very special. Hope to see another one.

    I've been to Galena several times and stayed in B+Bs. I love the feel of the town. It's like walking back in time. The prices are a little high. I was told a lot of people from Chicago come and shop there. At one time years ago they only had antique stores. Now it has been filled with a lot of new cheaper products. It is still a beautiful place to visit. My favorite time is fall.

    I love how you cut the book jacket apart to put Lincoln's picture in a frame. The bookends are precious and your husband is wonderful to get them for you. The display you showed with the antique clock frame and the ceramic bird is wonderful. As I go out thrifting, I'm always on the lookout for clocks that I can repurpose into displays the way you have. I have purchased some wall clocks recently that are round. Since round frames seem to be all the rage, it's easy to put either your own creation or other pictures into the round frames Thanks so much for sharing.

    Ohhh. Each time I see your videos I wish I had somewhere to store pieces that I wouldn't like to " get rid of". Unfortunately I have a smaller bungalow, with an attic that is likely to come crashing down because of my daughter's belongings that she doesn't want to get rid of.😢.
    I want to buy so many of the pieces that you buy. I do have two bags in the attic that my husband's cousin gave him. There are lots of those little brass ornaments and other really old bits and bobs in the bags. There is a tea cannister which has the commenaration of the wedding of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.
    Looking at your haul. Maybe I should look at other pieces in the bags in a different way.
    Thanks for all of your inspiration. The town you visited is really beautiful. It was like stepping back in time.
    It is so good to see that throughout time the inhabitants of the town knew the value in keeping the town in tip top condition.

    Weird? Absolutely not. Whoever says everything has to be match-y /match-y is wrong. To me, beauty is what pleases your personal taste, and I love your style. My own home reflects my 70+ years of living & traveling. Actually, much like your personal style. I do love all I’ve learned from you these last few years. Thanks so much & keep those DIY’s coming. ❤

    Awww, I’m so glad your husband got you the bookends❤ Galena is a really pretty town. I’ve never visited the US, so it is always so nice to see the different places. I love the copper coal bucket, my mother had a similar one with a blue and white porcelain handgrip on the handle. And those birds are gorgeous! Love from Denmark, Petrine❤

      Hello in Denmark! Illinois had a population of less than 3000 people in 1800, so the oldest homes in the state are from the mid 1800’s. There are many beautiful ones in my hometown of Peoria, but they are mostly in less desirable areas of the city. ☹️ I would love to live in a historic home!

    So beautiful, Sherry. Illinois has to be one of the best states for entire towns dedicated to Antique shops, cute cafes and B&Bs. We lived in Rantoul for eight years. I love the way you theme your book shelves. The Abe Lincoln shelf is so cute and celebrates history thru art. Thanks for taking us along on your fun trip.

    I was so disappointed when you said you left the beautiful bookends. I gasped when I saw them on your mantle! Your husband is a gem!
    I loved all of your finds but was most excited to see US Grant's home. He is one of my ancestors on my father's mother's side of our family.

    • @CanterburyCottage
      @CanterburyCottage  ปีที่แล้ว

      I gasped when I opened the box, too! I had called the store, and they told me they would NOT ship them! I have recently learned some new things about Grant. The house is pretty much exactly the same as when they lived there because it stayed in the family until it became a museum. Also, John Wilkes Booth had planned to assassinate Grant at the same time as Lincoln. However, Julia Grant did not want to go the theater and insisted that they leave Washington D.C. to see their children!
