Stevie played both the keyboards and drums on this one on top of writing and producing it. The man is a legitimate musical virtuoso that can play almost any instrument on Earth and has multiple albums where he played every single instrument on the album. I think his drumming is his most underrated part of his repertoire.

When you consider how many great songs he wrote for OTHER people, and then take his entire catalog of music into account, Stevie Wonder is the greatest artist in history.

“I Wish” is really a musical masterpiece. Choosing this as Songs in the Key of Life’s lead single was surely a no-brainer and, predictably, hit #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and R&B Singles chart.

Man, you might be my absolutely favorite youtuber doing these reactions to music they havent heard. I'm nowhere near saying the others are doing it wrong, but when you listen to the tunes, you dig deep and try to really listen to all aspects of a song. Whether I agree with you or not, I have always respected the thought process and your overall love for whatever sounds good to "you". Love it man keep em coming.

Vibrato use on the bass was quite common during the mid to late 70's in the jazz fusion and funk genre. If you get a chance, you tube the collaborative album with Ramsey Lewis and EWF (Earth, Wind & Fire), titled SALONGO. You won't regret it.

Stevie always hired the best rythem guitar players, base player, lead guitar, horns, etc. Some went on to play their own music, etc as they musically grew up. Did you know that Mr Wonder did the "Superstition" song on Sesame Street?

Just happened upon your channel. An older Metal head myself. But I do have to give props to where they may come. Some of that old Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind and Fire, The Commodores stuff had some of the best groves ever. Loved this, and am going to watch more. And I agree with everything you said about Steevie. A real legend.

Another vote for Weather Report and Birdland.
The bassline on that is insane (and glorious, the whole piece is) and the rest of the band are on fire.
Check it out,its really jazzy but would appeal to metalheads too.

One of the few songs that Stevie doesn’t play the synth bass on, this is a bass guitar played by Nathan Watts. Stevie of course plays the drum track and all the keyboard tracks as usual.

Rapper's Delight has the same bass line melody as Good Times.
You should check out his Fingerprints Part I and II. He sang this at 12 - 13 years old. You could tell then he was a genius.

Actually, I think he's doing a double-track of two bass guitars, one laying down a straight rhythm line and the other one doing cool and funny fills, even reacting to the lyrics.

DAMN I love this song. It reminds me of growing up and doing all those things you shouldn't, but god it was fun doing it! Before my mom passed away. We had a prime rib dinner, got high in the parking lot, then went and saw steve wonder. I thought, " you know, it doesnt get any better than this".

You are listening to an album from Stevie Wonder's classic period. This album was part of my grade school music curriculum. It was a double album set. It was deeply introspective. It's a national treasures. If you haven't already, I HIGHLY recommend you listen to all of it. I'm glad you noticed the horns. Not just the shouts, but the counterpoint and harmony. This album contains a lot of great musicians. Like Herbie Hancock. Michael Sembello. You did a great job on your reaction. It appears you understand some things about music.

Another classic example of bass, horns, drums, guitar hell the whole band is the Tower of Power song "What is Hip" . It's totally funky but with no slap bass. Tower of Power in full flight were absolutely jaw-dropping. You should at least check them out for your own pleasure. I think it will be quite pleasurable.

Some insight into Stevie, 2 docus: HITSVILLE: The Making Of Motown, & Michael Jackson’s Uourney From Motown To Off The Wall. The bass line here might be one of the most identifiable & badass combined. It may have been Nathan East but not sure. I think the only one that come close to that comes close, combining those elements, is Anthony Jackson on the O’Jay’s ‘For The Love Of Money’, which he played with a pick, also probably James Jamerson on Jackson 5 I Want You Back, & Verdine White on Earth Wind & Fire’s Shining Star.
Others more simple that are highly recognizable: Stand By Me (Ben E. King), My Girl, & Papa Was A Rolling Stone (Temptations, probably played by James Jamerson), Isaac Hayes’ Shaft, & Curtis Mayfield’s Freddie’s Dead, from the Superfly movie soundtrack. As you know there are also plenty famous rock bass lines but I can’t recall song & band names so well.

What's Goin' On? by Marvin Gaye didn't get a vote? If you haven't heard James Jameson on the bass on that song, you have missed gold. Please listen to that baseline. James Jameson played it lying flat on his back on the floor with someone holding the chart over him. He recorded it in ONE take. True story.
