    In my opinion the best value 64mm flat burr grinder available right now is the Kopi Deva I have one and it is, an incredible grinder, the spec is, solid construction (stainless steel and wood), 64mm Mazzer burrs (you can upgrade to ssp burrs), adjustable rpm from around 100 up to 1500 rpm, the first 2 production runs are Kickstarter campaigns, but Kopi have announced after that they will go on general sale, not sure what the RRP will be, but the Kickstarter price is around $600-650 shipped, the only thing that seems to put people off is that it is reachable battery powered, but have not had any issues with this yet, and the bettery is easy to replace when needed, so it should last many years of grinding.

It was like 450ish, I would have most likely understood the cost cutting that they did with some of the materials decisions. I think using a Versalab, Key, HG1, they all generally suffer from the same workflow problems due to grinder design, but Weber and Versalab have found ways to minimize it and therefore creating a better user experience. Kopi has not done that and the end result is a more fussy grinder that requires additional steps to get the coffee into the desired container.

      @@brandonleong3543 agreed dosing into a portafilter is a no go, but I am okay with the current design of dosing cup and cup catcher, no different to the Niche in that respect (except the Kopi dosing cup is suspended from the grouns shoot). However the hopper or lack of could do with a redesign, but that is a small inconvenience for me, and worth it for the coffee it produces, which is very much to my taste and the grounds are fluffly and about fhe most consistent you can get for the price. I guess it does not do for us all to love the same products.

  • @mike216514

    Disappointed to see people prefer DF64 over this. Such a bias. While this grinder is not perfect by any means, it’s already better than the DF64 out of the box. I have both the DF and JT. DF has much more room to retain grounds, the clump guard keeps grounds from single dosing, the sealing of grinding chamber is poor, and yet people are willing to fix these by purchasing 3d printing parts that ends up US$100 dollars upward and go through all the hustle.
    The JT needs some fix too but similar to the Ultra, the design is clean. JT64’s motor is much capable. Stalling occurs only because the power supply it shipped with is under-spec. I brought a full 480W power brick and under normal grinding rpm, it grinds light roast beans for espresso with no problem. I use a Flair 58 and it’s known to require finer grounds than normal.
    Personally I’m looking forward to see the JT in full potential. I see the JT as a lego chassis for the 64mm burrs. If you love the Ultra but lacks the budget, the JT offers you almost all the Ultra has, minus the easy burr alignment mechanism, and the HUGE power supply and thick cable behind.
    The comment is really long but hopefully someone will read it though. Thanks if you read til here🫶🏽

It’s price point is around a Kopi Deva whenever that is released but I do think both have to many quirks, both look to be faff to change, clean and do basic maintenance on but at least this can use MP and Cast that is more then can be said about Kopi Deva. Personally I do think there to many design flaws in the below 2k range the new G-micron/df64p can only do espresso and is even worse to calibrate, the old G-Iota/df64 was a grinder for modding it had to many flaws and quirks to work as in stock.

    • @mike216514
      @mike216514 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stalling occurs coz the power supply is under-spec and the way they use the grinder(super low rpm, MP burrs at espresso range). Flat burrs needs rpm to work well. The low rpm is also done by reducing power out of the motor(that’s what the knob on the side does), and thus no wonder it stalls.

    • @Goofygreyhoundgoober
      @Goofygreyhoundgoober 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mike216514 it stalled at full rpm also? Gives the outlook that motor is not powerful enough. And yes maybe because using burrs not designed for the grinder, but isn’t that a large appeal of 64mm flat burr grinders ie the ability to swap stock burrs for Ssp or others??

    • @mike216514
      @mike216514 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Goofygreyhoundgoober Short answer: it won't stall at ~30% "throttle" and onwards. And no it's SSP MP being the source of the problem, not the grinder.
      Long answer: I had my JT64 with full-spec power supply/brick for almost two weeks now. 5-10 espresso shots a day, never stalls under normal usage.
      The motor is actually plenty capable, claimed to be 360W, and my experience proofs that. The low rpm is achieved by drawing really low power from the supply, thus it of course lacks torque to grind the beans.
      Flat burrs in nature needs certain rpm to effectively spin out the grounds. Using a rpm that's too slow will make the mechanism fail.
      Also, the burr design of the SSP MP does NOT "bite in" beans aggressive enough. Thus, it works poorly in rpm that's already abnormally low.
      Once you dial up the power to 30% or more, I don't see a problem of stalling at all.

    • @mike216514
      @mike216514 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BensCoffeeRants personally I don’t think variable rpm is necessary. I prefer JT64 because of its minimal space for retention and easy cleaning. The Z1 is a better version of the EK&Ode, but fundamentally the bean feeding “tunnel” will always have retention. This is the reason I sold my Ode. Btw I like their Gen 2 burrs. It’s price friendly and preform somewhere between SSP’s MP and HU, in terms of clarity vs body. But I guess Brian could have a much cleaner comment in this than I do

    • @BensCoffeeRants
      @BensCoffeeRants 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mike216514 Variable RPM is nice to have if you like experimenting or a want a little different profile with the same grinder / burrs.
      I never had an grinder with an auger type system that leads the beans into the grind chamber like that, but I'd think that would improve retention (if implemented properly) since it's being fed in to grind. The other benefit of that is that it takes gravity or the weight of beans on top out of the equation and you get an steady feed rate which should technically make grind size more consistent, whether or not that makes enough of a difference to be noticeable I don't know.

    • @mike216514
      @mike216514 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BensCoffeeRants That’s an interesting insight! Never thought of that. I guess your thought will work when the grinder is pair with burrs that cut beans very efficiently, or the “spiral“ mark on the auger has a very gentle slope. Because, from my experience with the Fellow Ode, sometimes the beans don’t get grind fast enough, some of the bits will bounce back to the “tunnel”. Anyway, any innovations in the grinder will eventually benefit us with more choice and overall better grinding experience!

  • @ggusta1
    @ggusta1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow. There's some decent stuff out there from reputable manufacturers for the kind of money he paid. If it was $400 for the better burrs it might make sense, but not for what the owner paid.
