I’ve learned like 30 songs from Marty, he’s not an “influencer” he’s an educator trying to make it in this world. I don’t get coming down on someone who’s uploaded hundreds of FREE lessons and tutorials and has been a big positive to the YT guitar community. He walked so guys like you could run.

That might have meant something if you didn't finish with that metaphor. If you like any of them mentioned in this video, cool. By the sounds of it though you've been using his free content, not the paid courses this video references? He didn't really come down on him, he just didn't think it represented value for money, it's just a different opinion.

I have not bought any course to learn guitar. I'll watch a video and get the tab listen to the song and just do it!
I think it was on this video if I was to buy a course it would be Marty, Steve Stein or, I have been checking this channel out called Guitar at Work. Learned a few things from him.

I have a teacher and get weekly lessons. It’s not expensive IMO. After the beginner stuff like learning all the beginner open chords, I moved onto power chords and learning the notes on the 6th and 5th string.
I’m learning to read simple rhythms and most importantly, how to count them out.
Dio - Holy diver = 1 and a 2 and a 3 and 4. Learning to play in time is very important to my teacher and I’m sounding good.
I pick songs I believe are in my skill level, bounce it off my teacher to see if he agrees and work on them developing new techniques with each song.
I’m 52, I started at 49. I have arthritis and stiff fingers. I can get inflammation. I couldn’t play unison bends with out pain, so he changed the music sheet at the end of a song for me to a fast paced blues scale instead of the bend part so I could play the song and have fun.
I highly recommend getting a teacher/taking lessons if you’re a beginner and want to learn the guitar.

I agree. I've never improved quicker than when I booked a block of a dozen half hour lessons. It cost me about 11 GBP per half hour and It really helps to have somebody there to say "you're doing this wrong" and having somebody to jam with for a few minutes a week really gave me incentive to practice.

    Business is changing
I work as a guitar teacher and rely on people paying me for weekly lessons. Have been doing it a long time
With the rise of TH-cam People are used to getting knowledge and education for free
I don’t know who started the trend and it don’t know if it’s good or bad
Saying that , I make use of s lot of free content myself and I think I should be more appreciative because it’s very easy to take it for granted .
But as I said business is changing
It can be very hard watching TH-camrs reap so much rewards from so little work(in comparison to a regular teacher teaching up to 50 students a week one on one and the myriad of challenges that come with it) because of the ratio of the labour to global audience and actual /possible income
I think there are great , but There are a lot of things a video can’t teach , nor a genetic paid for course. Nothing beats real life one on one tailors coaching
It’s going to be interesting to watch how guitar education evolves both on and offline

      @BlazertronGames 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@loganblurton6035 As you get to the more intermediate stuff, he does stress that you should start making your own custom routine, because everyone is different, and he can't provide a structured routine for every single player, but he gives a solid outline for an hour long routine. 10 minutes technique practice, 10 minutes knowledge (theory, scales etc.) 10 minutes practicing songs, 10 minutes working on rhythm, 10 minutes transcribing/ear training (which you could just do outside of the routine) and 10 minutes improv practice. Once you know what you want to play, you need to research a bit and find more specific stuff that you should practice. I've personally change it around quite a bit, but keep it around an hour long.

I think what this does show is, we all learn slightly differently. When we're talking about online guitar courses, obviously there will be some similarities but I think the way the courses are structured, the camera angles, the supporting material provided and honestly, if you can tolerate the person (their voice etc) - is what separates them and it's not black and white on who is the best.
I think you do pay a premium for some of these because they have large accounts - are we really pretending we wouldn't do the same? I've had the best experiences from Justin Guitar (it's mostly entry level that I'm past but I have checked it out and think it's a good starting point for any new players). And Udemy courses, using search terms and looking at reviews, there's always deals on. Now they're one off courses, but for less than a tenner you've got it for life, often receive updates, the creators respond and provide material to work with.
I think if you're considering any, firstly you'd only consider channels you like the free content for already, and then see if the subjects and content make sense to you.

The point of courses, free or paid, is to give you a structured way to advance through lessons, the fact that the same material may already exist for free scattered around youtube doesn't change this. Also some people connect better with a certain tutor, which may make it worthwhile for them to pay. And finally, when talking about advanced courses, the material might not necessarily exist on the internet or may be difficult to find - so in that case a course can save you time. I am not pro-courses but I can see how they can be useful for some ppl.

Marty’s great. I’ve learned a bunch of riffs from Marty’s music. Mostly by accident. I’m doomscrolling through shorts. Then a Marty music clip pops up. He plays a song I don’t know. And then I’m like dammit. I need to learn this real quick.
Edit: I’ve never taken a lesson online or in real life. I have no idea what the courses are like. As a child of the 80/90s there’s so much free content it’s unreal and couldn’t imagine running out of ideas based on what’s freely available. Learning back then was an entirely different world.

Honestly, Ben Eller is probably my favorite to learn stuff from. Him and, i think his name is Andy, from shut up and play. They both have good ears. Carl Brown is ok too as i like that he goes slow, helped me out a ton early on but after a bit i noticed mistakes for some songs he would make. Depending on the style of music i go with different guys. For metal i go to Carl or Guitar force or Ben Eller. For classic rock i go to Andy frok Shut up and play or Marty. Marty is decent for blues style stuff but i wouldnt go to him for any metal songs. Different guys have their wheelhouses. While i would love a regular teacher, financial restraints have forced me to learn on my own. Ive done ok so far but my understanding of theory is still nill. I just learn different songs, pay attention to little riffs and tricks and try to incorperate it into my own playing. Its not a perfect system but i am a hundred times better now then when i started.

I also tried some guitar courses. I found helpful that there are a lot of free lessons on TH-cam so that it is possible to find the instructors that work good for you or just match your style. I wasn’t so much a fan of Bernth because that is still too much for me. In the complete beginning I liked Paul and Andy and later I found Ben Eller. But for me the best in my opinion is Robert Baker that fitted best for me as I love 80s rock style and it matches my knowledge. I really can recommend him. Have a look at his free lessons on TH-cam.

His course book is very good, but very dense and academic. Your music theory has to be intermediate going in, otherwise you’ll immediately get lost. Otherwise, I’d highly recommend it, but only if you have a legitimate musical background.

I'm old, I learned to play by tuning my guitar to vinyl records back in the day. I can't read music, so I just listen and figure stuff out by ear. If someone wants to show you how to play something why don't they use a camera angle from the players point of view. When I look down at the fretboard that is how I remember what I've learned. Not from watching someone play.

I paid $250 for a dvd bundle to learn how intervals work by Marty. It came with how to solo in different modes as well lol
I was 16 and could realistically only play that shape 1 minor pentatonic over everything. Looking back the info in that bundle was pretty much fundamentals and basic stuff but it was a great place to get me where I am today.
I respectfully have to pushback on the idea that Marty is a scammer. You either identify with a course or method that helps you or you don’t. Yes a lot of the information is free and out there but not everyone learns the same way. Most music schools will put you in crippling debt. when you think about it, this marketplace of music education content is amazing and so accessible free or paid. Even if it’s just a bag I licks lol
But yea in terms of people not getting refunds and service that’s messed up.
Edit: Tyler can’t do Tomo’s triad test still 😆
