    Two things we can safely conclude:
    1. M1 is an impressive piece of hardware;
    2. Adobe doesn't care about you one tiny bit.

      Adobe SUX, they've been snotty to Mac users for the last 20 years. They dragged their feet when OS-X came out, Photoshop was one of the last big apps to be ported. Ironically they had recently brought out In-Design, and got it ported first, way before Quark Express. Due to that In-Design overtook Quark. Adobe was very slow in the Intel transition as well.

    Honestly I came here to see how the editing experience was and not how fast/slow exporting time is. I’ve read some reviews that the M1 MBP struggles dealing with a 4K timeline, dropping frames and gets slow. That’s what really matters before exporting.

In that there is some project corruption bug that happens everytime you reload the project (and this has nothing to do with specs but how the software was architectured).

    I understand the importance of export times, but how is the editing experience? Were there too many dropped frames with the M1 chip to edit halfway efficiently? For me, I don't mind waiting 2 hours for a video to export (you know, most of the time), but if the editing experience is too laggy to work in a timely manner, that's the big dealbreaker for me.

      Same here. That was my biggest problem with the imac pro and the reason I got an mba m1. I've been editing on Resolve and find it much much snappier than the 10 core imac pro i use at work. It does start to struggle once the timeline gets busy if your timeline is 4K, but drop it down to 1080 and it runs as smooth as 480p, and then at the end I just flick it to 4K before export.
      Gotta try FCP soon, it's been 6 years since I last used it so there's a learning curve.

Too many people are talking out the concept of selling MacPros for M1 chip machines. Your video shows 2-important things; 1) MacPros are still viable, having a far wider use case that some what to present, and 2) proof that an M{x} chipset for MacPros will be amazing. My only hope is that Apple provides a physical upgrade path / program to swap-out for the M{x} chips.

My own experiences with Final Cut Pro X are that it can play back any Sony A7s III 10bit 4:2:2 file and the same for Canon R5 - including the 8K IPB, which plays back incredibly smoothly. DaVinci Resolve does not play back the 8K file in real time, which is disappointing and I hope they fix that. But it does play back the R5's 4K HQ files very well, and also the A7s III files. Thanks for your work on this!

    Most people are looking at these first Apple Silicon Macs wrong - these aren't Apple's powerhouse machines: they're simply the annual spec bump of the lowest end Apple computers with DCI-P3 displays, Wifi 6, and the new Apple Silicon M1 SoC.
    They have the same limitations as the machines they replace - 16 GB RAM and two Thunderbolt ports.
    These are the machines you give to a student or teacher or a lawyer or an accountant or a work-at-home information worker - folks who need a decently performing machine with decent build quality who don't want to lug around a huge powerhouse machine (or pay for one for that matter). They're still marketed at the same market segment, though they now have a vastly expanded compute power envelope.
    The real powerhouses will probably come next year with the M1x (or whatever). Apple has yet to decide on an external memory interconnect and multichannel PCIe scheme, if they decide to move in that direction.
    Other CPU and GPU vendors and OEM computer makers take notice - your businesses are now on limited life support. These new Apple Silicon models can compete speed-wise up through the mid-high tier of computer purchases, and if as I expect Apple sells a ton of these many will be to your bread and butter customers.
    In fact, I suspect that Apple - once they recover their R&D costs - will be pushing the prices of these machines lower while still maintaining their margins - while competing computer makers will still have to pay Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, and nVidea for their expensive processors, whereas Apple's cost goes down the more they manufacture. Competing computer makers may soon be squeezed by Apple Silicon price/performance on one side and high component prices on the other. Expect them to be demanding lower processor prices from the above manufacturers so they can more readily compete, and processor manufacturers may have to comply because if OEM computer manufacturers go under or stop making competing models, the processor makers will see a diminishing customer base.
    I believe the biggest costs for a chip fab are startup costs - no matter what processor vendors would like you to believe. Design and fab startup are _expensive_ - but once you start getting decent yields, the additional costs are silicon wafers and QA. The more of these units Apple can move, the lower the per unit cost and the better the profits.
    So ... who should buy these M1 Macs?
    If you're in the target demographic - the student, teacher, lawyer, accountant, or work-at-home information worker - this is the Mac for you.
    If you're a heavy computer user like a creative and don't simply want a light and cheap computer with some additional video and sound editing capability for use on the go - I'd wait for the M1x (or whatever) next year. You'll probably kick yourself next year when the machines targeted at _you_ finally appear.

  • @joelbarnett1
    @joelbarnett1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Premiere does a lot of its rendering on the CPU so it does not require the whole frame to be loaded into GPU VRAM. In DaVinci resolve you need enough VRAM to render high resolutions, 8GB of VRAM from the GTX 2060 is no way near enough, you need more like 16-24GB VRAM. The reason that the M1 could render was that is has shared GPU memory, so it had access to more VRAM.

    Armando, thanks for this video. I appreciate the effort to give "real world" performance comparisons. It is illuminating to see the performance of industrial hardware when compared to pro-sumer gear in a likely work scenario. You definitely see the trade-offs that are being made between cost and processing time and how much these trade-offs are starting to shrink in some situations. This is exactly the type of review that is so valuable because it allows people to compare the benefits and drawbacks to a system and select the system that meets their particular needs/limitations. This video is a real contribution to the creative community. There is a difference between "fanboy" advertisements and critical review and you definitely are the in the camp of the latter.

  • @digitaldevigner4080
    @digitaldevigner4080 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Very well done video overall. I would like to point out a few things however.
    1. Most people don’t buy a Mac with 2 TB of flash storage. It isn’t exactly fair to compare it to other computers at the $2,300 price tag because a huge chunk of that is just storage. 2 TB can be nice on the road but external storage is easy to do and a lot more affordable. For most users this would be a much lower cost computer and nowhere near the $2,300 in this video.
    2. I understand there is a lot of excitement about the M1 but this is an entry level chip in an entry level computer and completely unrealistic to expect it to beat a desktop computer. The M1 GPU is very impressive for how little of power it uses and what it can do compared to other integrated graphics computers but it’s still integrated graphics vs a dedicated GPU. The M1 is the budget entry level Mac right now and never meant to be a high end system replacement. The upcoming Apple Silicon 16” MBP and iMac would be a lot more accurate to compare to these other computers.
    3. The M1 has hardware decoding for some 10bit HEVC formats that not even a Nvidia 3090 can do right now. If anybody shoots with a DSLR using some more difficult to edit formats the M1 may actually be much faster. Some formats render faster and playback perfectly smooth on the M1 vs a 12 core Mac Pro. So it kind of depends of the type of footage. The higher compressed formats will see a huge advantage on the M1. The higher end formats like Raw that depend on brute force processing will not perform as well because this is an entry level chip.
    4. What makes the M1 amazing is the battery power, low fan noise and low heat compared to other computers. It may render slower but everything it does it does just as well on battery power. In the field away from power that matters more to some people vs render speed on a desk. It can edit for half a day sitting at Starbucks just as well as it can on a desk plugged into power. This makes it more realistic as a field computer to check footage, organize media, assemble a rough cut and so forth. If one is on a long location project it can still render if need be to upload daily’s or client approvals. There are dozens of reasons to get a M1 over just render speed. It’s really about the balance of power and efficiency unlike anything Intel or AMD has in this entry level chip class and integrated graphics.

    DaVinci Resolve is Adobe's biggest competitor. You can be sure that Adobe is very concerned about not falling behind on the M1 platform. I've heard that a beta version of Premiere is going to be released before Christmas. That would suggest that a commercial version of Premiere adapted for the M1 could appear as early as Q1 or Q2 in 2021.

    Premiere is decent for a few very select workflows. I converted 10bit 4K footage 24-120fps from my a7siii and turned it into ProRes 4:4:4 HLG. I ended up exporting 4K 24fps HDR video for a music video. Surprisingly it did it fast about 15 minutes for a 5 minute HDR clip (obviously it won’t be in the range of real time rendering, it’s hdr and the bitrate is much higher than most reviewers test with). I’d love to see someone test a similar project on resolve and final cut as I have no experience on how well those programs handle HDR.

    • @RiceCubeTech
      @RiceCubeTech 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Premiere is buggy with simple things but surprisingly due to how old it’s legacy programming is, the support for obscure formats that aren’t h.264 and pro res is high. Final cut has speed, resolve has speed and color, and premiere while buggy has support for tons of formats.

    Thanks, Armando! Very detailed and thorough (and great-looking!) video! Tiny little suggestion for your script/narration: it kept throwing me when you'd give the longest time for a test, then say "followed by" the next fastest, then "followed by" again. To me, it makes more sense to first say the fastest, which is then "followed by" the next fastest, etc. I understand you meant it either in terms of when you ran the tests or simply when you revealed the next result, but I think it's less confusing in timed tests if "followed by" means "next longest". Again, tiny nitpick...it didn't take really take away from the excellent video!

    No testing with popular formats used by action cams, smartphones and Mirrorless. And no real world editing, just exporting. Also, the Puget spec build (it doesn't matter who built it if done correctly) was easily the best value. An equivalent Puget spec PC you're showing could be built in 2020 for less than £1,500 - I built a 3970x, 128GB RAM & 3090 for less than £3,600 that same year featuring mostly used hardware barring ram & GPU.
    Unless a rapid turn over is required, which usually means videos that are less than 15 - 20 minutes (typically well under 15 minutes) then export really isn't what the majority need to know. Most want to know about reliability, real-time playback & scrubbing.
    BTW the reason I mention playback, scrubbing & common media formats is because most watching a YT vid usually only have access to and/or a budget for hardware that uses such popular media which is known to be taxing on the system during the editing process.
    What most people use/have; mirrorless like a Sony Alpha, a GoPro and a Samsung Galaxy Phone or iPhone whilst their budget to edit is typically under £2,000. Export times are a happy bonus. A buttery smooth editing experience is what's desired the most by any editor.

    The reality is that Premiere is still the industry standard, even is their software is bloated and buggy. Until they optimize things on their end, these new M1 machines don't mean much for people who have to share project files with other professionals. If you don't have to bounce files to people for larger projects then just use FCP since it clearly runs best on Mac. Premiere is honestly kind of a pain, but only a fraction of video professionals currently use FCP for client work. Not saying this is a good thing, but it is reality for the time being.

    Its important to remember that resolve is a universal app not a native app. AKA its ment to run on both rather than like final cut that uses additional features/optimized routes for better performance. As of right now I wouldn't suggest an m1 to anyone who needs the fastest time unless they use Final cut. It is cool to know that resolve will get faster as time goes on.

    This is about exporting, which of course you also can do in batch overnight, so speed isn't that important, more important is the overall editing workflow and exchange with other software such as protools. I also need to work with Premiere and Avid as a posproduction studio so M1 is no option.
