Well AC never was a single-series simulator. Just the fact that it allows you to drive a 1967 F1 car AND a 2016 F1 car shows that of course some compromises have to be made if you want this kind of variety. I too would love to see a new GPL. As some dev pointed out, though, vintage sim racing is a niche within a niche, which means it is rather unlikely that someone takes the time and the resources to develop a 1967 F1 racing sim any time soon. AC with its huge moddability gives us the chance of getting close to a GPL 2, so it is really up to the mod community to work towards that goal. So far there are decent cars and some great vintage tracks in AC but all in all still a bit too sparse.

Before that I was a serious Papyrus GPL fan boy for ten years (Papyrus became iRacing), going back to its original release in 1998. It breaks my heart, but the iRacing 49 sucks. It suffers from the same general problem that all iRacing cars have, which is evil handling 'on the limit'. I finally started looking for alternatives, after seeing the very best iRacing 49 drivers in the world all crash out of an official championship race. I had to admit that something was wrong with iRacing, and that after ten years it really wasn't getting much better. I'm not trying to start a fight. If someone here loves iRacing and think it's great as it is, then fine. This is simply my opinion, but I'm not alone. I can say that as a long-time real-world racer, I know how to probe the limits without crashing. It's a necessary skill when your real ass is on the line! I have no problems doing that in Assetto Corsa, as well. After driving various AC vintage cars pretty extensively for the past few months, I discovered and downloaded the GPL mod a few days ago. Recently, Jimmy Broadbent tried to match Jim Clark's 1967 Monza lap record of 1:28.5~, using the regular AC Lotus 49. I did the same thing, and got a best time of 1:27.595. Then I repeated the test with the GPL mod's 49, and got a 1:28.575. So while the GPL mod uses the AC Lotus and Ferrari 312/67, it does alter their characteristics. The AC 49 can rev about 1000 RPM higher, for example, and handling is subtly different. Papyrus GPL's big remaining strength is very good AI, although I can make a case that even the Assetto Corsa AI are better than real people online! Anyway, I'm glad to see that you've been able to improve them. I'd love to know exactly how you went about doing that.
Funny thing... this is exactly how remember GPL looked, fully updated with GPLEA mod and trackaddons etc... 😎 the whole color palette really makes it look full of nostalgia. Awesome video! Got VR?
Despite the original Grand Prix legend is inferiro to Assetto Corsa and other modern games, I like the graphics more as they feel vintage and more atmospheric...If some talented modder added a learning AI for GPLegends, giving the traits and personality to the drivers, I would much more prefer GPLegend....I also would like to see on the top left corner the animated faces of the driver expressing with a few lines their thoughts and intentions....I know, a bit irrealistic, but I would love to see that. Anyway, great video, love the voice commenting the race.

I'd love if the AI could be made better for this mod because I love it, but I can start from the back and pass all the other cars within a lap. I'm no racing god either. Interesting that the Kunos Ferrari and Lotus are about 2-3 seconds a lap quicker than the mod ones...
AC is a great sim, very glad to see you dedicating the time to get the AI working. Force feedback another of AC shortcomings, I've never been able to get a good FF feel, not like rFactor 2 which is force feedback king.
I own a copy of GPL...(now that's really dating myself)..so I installed it on my PC...it still runs great but...It doesn't allow the Screen resolution that my ultrawide uses (3440x1440) so it's a bit of a disappointment in that regard. I tried fooling it using the GEM program but the updated rasterizer doesn't seem to work to get it into that screen rez but it was still great fun to run some of those older courses like Spa. Great vid pal..thanks for the inspiration to use GPL again.
@GPLaps great driving. Have you tried the Silverstone 67 track that comes with AC? I remember having lots of fun both in the Ferrari 67 and also in the Lotus 25 on simracingsystem multiplayer races. The Lotus 25 is particularly fun to drive for me. About the AI: in AC it was kind of an afterthought so it is not as sophisticated as it could be. They improved it with ACC but sadly it is not moddable (so far) so unless some modder works on the AC one this is what we've got.

I wish the iracing lotus 49 was as fun to drive as the GPL and AC Grand Prix cars. I feel like I go from having super grip to zero grip really fast in the iracing car, where as in the other sims I can really feel the car better. Maybe it’s because I was using the iracing baseline setup though
Great work on the Ais, and i dont get it why asseto corsa release a game with such poor behaviour coming from Ais....if you can make them able to fight back for positions, that would be great as well, awesome work!
I'm not sure if you are able to share your AI files Jake ? But I've ben running through AC tracks with the GPL mod and found that it is simply not competitive. I played GPL at launch, played it for longer than any other sim, but I've never been very good, enjoyed racing the cars immensely despite my suckage. In GPL I never dominated the AI like I do in this mod on AC, hell even put my Ferrari on pole at Monaco, one of my least favourite tracks. Also encountered a bug where the AI would not get off the line, had to change a setting in an ini file to not use "new AI behaviour" which can't be good, but it's better than having half the grid stalled on the line for the entire race, they don't disappear. Have you tried VR with Ac or RF2 ? Perhaps that's why I am better in this game, I only play in VR. Also Chief Wegwam is a great modder on RF2, would love to see you take out his GPL like mod out and review it, he's got a 1985 Indycar and a 1986 F1 mod too which may be just up your street. Love your content BTW, your voice over is outstanding.

Do you use Content Manager ? You can adjust the ballast and limiter of your own car to make the speeds of the cars a good match. I have had some great battles in very long races driving the GPL Cooper
Its important what you have the steering ratio set to as well. I like running 10:1 typically but play around with that to make sure the steering is not too dull or too twitchy.

You should run the 1955 Maserati on the Monza oval in assetto corsa.
The oval is narrower, bumpier, and overall crazier in AC compared to GPL.
Blank screen and pitboard is nice.

How good was that! After a few laps I'd forgotten it wasn't GPL, as the AI was very reminiscent of the GPL setup.

Yep, I find the iRacing version to be borderline undriveable and no fun at all. :(
The iRacing Lotus 49 is just fine after some time getting used to it. Give it some time and it's really fun to drive.
The funny thing is.. iRacing is the grand-grand son of GPL, as they both come from Dave Kaemmer.
Why is this not on the oval at Monza? It was still in use in 1967.

If you cant make a mod for the ai can you make a tutorial on changing the ai in the way you did
In my experience (doing a season in the Honda), GPL Bruce McLaren also drove crazy and aggressive... did you tweak the AI in AC to match GPL?

Not anymore. It became too much of a hassle to set up and unfortunately some of the newer mods for GPL don’t support it

Dude ,where are the meters? Like the tacho as in how much km/h youre driving ?
I just wish one could make the AI generally faster. In cars with low grip like these, the AI is just so slow.

I am really loving the mod, it needs tweaking for sure but the feeling of the car is so fun - could you also list your mods please?
also - ACC has amazing AI modern GT cars of course but they are very very good
ACC looks like a great sim but that kind of car doesn't interest me much.
