Wow, why do so many of these people selling collections, send pictures of key cards to draw you in, and when you get there, they suddenly change their minds, or they turn up sold already. It’s not right, and if it were me, I’d make that last minute call, before I head in their direction, to make sure those KEY CARDS are still in their possession, and willing to sell them.

It's a shame that these situations keep happening, and I'm bummed for you, Ty, but glad that the deal worked out in the end.
Hope the vendor's family (and esp. the kids) enjoy the swimming pool!
You asked whether we'd prefer the cards, or the pool...

Soon you’ll be augmenting your ebay sales with a nice TH-cam income and who knows maybe you will get picked up by a network but since you’re a wholesome group of ppl I wouldn’t count on demon infested Hollywood (research what holly-wood was actually used for) to take notice. Keep in mind there are tons of "non-profits" that are seeking free products, so its unlikely you will hear from them. A great source of product is "junk wax" that is supoosedly worthless (its not). There was an "organization" in my local area that was supposedly doing something similar to what youre suggesting, I volunteered to help as its helped me with my own issues (USMC) but in the end they only wanted monetary donations to support thier "cause". Pools are a waste...you'll never get your money out of it. Finished basement? Waste of money too.....all basements end up flooding eventually UNLESS....you live HIGH on a hill..... Should have just kept the cards.
Better ideas as to what to do with the proceeds:
1.If you have medical bills - pay them off.
2.If you have a house mortgage - put the proceeds DOWN on the principal. What you'll save in interest over the years will be INCREDIBLE and will continue to pay off for many, many years.
3.Use it to pay for a child's college or trade school - to hell with the pool.
4.Just put it in an EMERGENCY fund.....
    5. Use it to pay OFF car debt and next time buy a car with CASH (see #4).
    6. Use it to pay OFF credit card debt and don't get into DEBT again (see #4).

It's the sellers responsibility to notify the potential buyer before they hit the road that the picture he sent you is now not current. This saves the buyer a 9 hour round trip to find out the item has been removed. No excuse for that. Ever. It's happened to me before and it wastes my time, gas and money. I understand why he kept it BUT no excuse for not telling you before you set out on the journey. It's as simple as a text.

this guy first says he doesn't want to keep any of it for his kids because he wants them to build their own collections and then says "oh yeah i did pull out that big card you wanted from the photos to keep for my kids" right there is why it is so hard to travel for collections because that happens way to much where people will bait ya with photos and then say oh i am keeping that one. respect to you guys for handling those people professionally and keeping on chasing and not letting these let downs get ya. seems way to much of a pattern lately of "can't find them cards we showed ya".

This biggest problem with the hobby is people being dishonest and playing games. It was just as true in the 80's as it is now. People just went about it differently before the internet.

I remember card shops weighing Action Packed unopened packs right behind the counter after a box was opened to see if there was a 24k gold card in it. I mean cmon

Tie, when you evaluate a collection to buy and begin to craft your offer, does centering of graded cards come into play? Or if the card is a PSA 9, do you just take the rough average of what a PSA 9 is going for?
The reason I ask is we all obsess over the most centered card ‘buy the card not the grade.’ But I notice when I sell my PSA slabs to a dealer at a show, they treat all 9’s the same or 8’s the same, or 5’s the same. I rarely see them check the centering and move up and down on the price because of it.
Interested in anyone’s take on this?

I rarely overthink that part of it...especially on a larger qty deal. But on huge cards... I absolutely consider that.

If there was a certain card that somebody sent me a picture of and that was the reason why I was going and once I got there, he didn’t want to sell it would turn around and go back home

I have a very comparable lot of cards to sell (mostly Acuna, Judge, Ohtani, Tatis, Franco, a few Jordans, Griffeys, Ruth) if you are interested, let me know and we can get a zoom or in person meeting. I am willing to unload my whole collection. Nothing held back. Many Judge 1/1's, I'm a low pop collector.
