Its not an emissions cap, its a production cap and Alberta will fight back because it is yet another overreach outside the scope of the federal government.
The fossil fuels business is a thriving industry in Canada. The Liberals have supported increased oil and natural gas production in Canada by building a new pipeline (the Trans Mountain Expansion pipeline ). Other oil pipelines, like Line 3 from Hardisty, Alberta, to Wisconsin, have been reconstructed with larger-diameter pipe to allow for increased takeaway capacity. Line 5 has now been approved by the US government. But now the Liberals want to cap emissions of the oil industry? A cap on emissions is a cap on production. The largest $ project in Canadian history is the LNG facility under construction in Kitimat BC. The Coastal Link natural gas pipeline that will supply natural gas to the LNG facility in Kitimat is now completed. Additional First Nation smaller LNG plants are being built on the BC coast that will also be supplied by the Coastal Link natural gas pipeline. The cost of the Kitimat LNG plant & Coastal Gas Link pipeline is a $40 billion project! Canada has the third largest oil reserves in the world. Natural gas reserves are 18th in the world. Oil is Canada's largest export. The fossil fuels industry supplies a huge amount of jobs for Canadians. Jobs that pay well and allow a family to buy a home, raise children, and educate those children. If anything Canada needs more jobs that pay good wages. Canada is responsible for 1.41% of world GHG emissions. We are not China which is responsible for 30.1% of world GHG emissions. Canada is a cold climate country so we will always have higher per capita GHG emissions. The Trudeau Liberals have run up a $1.25 trillion debt, to re-supply and modernize the Canadian military will cost more than $80 billion. Where were they planning on getting the money they needed to pay down the debt and modernize the Canadian military? I look at who is making this announcement. Mr Gilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change an ex-Greenpeace/ Équiterre employee. Gilbeault is an anti-fossil fuel zealot. He is flanked by Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. Wilkinson is also an eco-zealot. Perhaps Wilkinson should be more focused on speeding up the permitting process to open new mines in Canada? It currently takes 15 years to fully permit a new mine in Canada. In many other countries in the world, you can get that done in 1-2 years. What is the Minister doing to encourage oil exploration off the coast of Nfld. and Lab.? Just maybe we have the wrong people in charge of these departments? Canada needs a government that encourages the fossil fuel industry in Canada . Frankly, we need the jobs and tax revenue generated by the industry. But the Liberals do things like legislate downstream emissions requirements on the Canadian fossil fuel industry. No oil-producing country in the world considers downstream emissions. The fact is the oil industry in Canada and the provinces involved in those industries have been doing things to reduce emissions. Alberta and the oil industry spent $10 billion to build an ultra-low sulphur diesel fuel refinery. Labs are working on direct steam injection to reduce water use in oil sands production and make that water recyclable. Chemical recyclable processes to separate oil from sand are being worked on. The oil industry has discovered land areas in Alberta that are ideal for carbon storage.
This is an attack on Albertans! I hope Alberta sends a message, no more equalization payments for ANY province from here on out. It’s about time we take care of ourselves!

@@clydemifflin3600 It averages around $100 billion /year. Which is a lot, but is actually only 3.2% of Canada's GDP. Estimates show that by 2100 the cumulative cost to Canada would be over 5 Trillion if emissions are left unchecked. Canada is a developed, wealthy country - and our oil and gas industries are raking in profits. Why can't we reduce emissions and work on alternatives and ask the industries who make so much money off the immediate exploit of our resources to contribute to the costs of using those resources? For those that are oversimplifying and calling Liberals the enemy of Big Oil - what about the $34 Billion spent by the Liberals on just the Trans Mountain expansion?
