Volkswagen is really squeezing all the juice out of its Polo platform; it already underpins the popular Polo and the T-Cross. Now the German brand has just launched this, the Taigo, onto South African showroom floors.
So what's this Taigo all about? Is it just a fat Polo for more money? We sent our video journalist Ciro De Siena to find out.
In this video we take a detailed look at the various Taigo trim levels, engine and gearbox options, the boot space of the Taigo vs the T-Cross, the interior and the extensive list of optional extras.

That Dieselgate took a knock on them, also the electric path now so cars will be replacing what we used to so that inevitably its about enough space for the battery packs which the smaller lower platforms wont be able to accomodate or "justify" financially ...VW always claimed the only reasom they kept making the Jetta was because it sold in USA...yet here in SA its the go to for many and I have not seen it not sell ever since it was first made...if you ask me they should have kept the jetta in the market...it would always have sold if they could make the golf hybrid then jetta was even better of an option...the last sporty jetta we got here was the mk3 VR6 and the odd V5 im the Jetta 4(a few V6 mk4 Bora imports i have seen also)but specifically reffering to whats sold from manufacturers in our market...imagine a jetta 5 R32,Jetta 6/7R etc...guess those execs are forgetting the VW slogan "for the love of peoples cars"...

I own the car 3 months. 1.0 liter 110hp DSG Style version plus some more things.
When i heard about the car i was intimidating to what i’m going to see. From close, and after test driving the car i was convinced that it really is the car i want.
After 3 months owning the car for everyday use in the city (Athens/Greece) and 5 trips my review is this:
Super well built car, seems and feels very premium and expensive, very easy to drive and very comfortable. Spaces for 4 adults are more than OK, power is just fine, i mean you get a lot from acceleration and it feels like a bigger engine , in highway is soundproof and comfy, all safety systems makes you relax and enjoy without even trying.
What i would like is a heavier steering wheel in bigger speeds but i can live without that. Totally value for money car, premium beautiful strong and practical.
I enjoy it everyday. Go check it fellas

My wife and I have been buying new VW Polos (lease) every 2/3yrs since 1999. When we saw the Taigo, we went and looked at one and asked for delivery date, etc.
The model we wanted was available in a cold of months at a slight £20 per month increase.
My wife mentions that she had always wanted a T-Roc in white, but that it was too much per month for us.
Salesman went away and said if we took a model (2022 facelift) already in build, we could have it in a month for £30 a month extra.
For us that was a real bargain, we now have the car and love it. Had the salesman not put together a really good deal, we would have had a Taigo.

What I’ve learnt with cars is that you must only choose a trim level, engine, gearbox and exterior colour. Don’t spec anything more than that, you don’t need to spec anything more than that. Doing so is just a waist of money. Car companies should learn to comprehensively spec their cars as standard like companies like Lexus. The higher your trim level, the better the spec and that’s it.

I think the value proposition is night and day. Nobody can compete with Havaal and Cherry. What VW have is brand equity. You dint build that overnight. And with this car being polo based, you know you can hang onto it forever and you'll never have to worry about parts in the long term. That hasn't been proven with Cherry or Havaal but that doesn't mean it won't be true for them. That being said, you can't blame people for sticking to what they know

We are a snobbish market group in SA & these car manufacturers, specifically VW, have noticed that & are exploiting the opportunity. We want to be associated with a brand name & once that association happens it's gets easier for a brand to charge what they like. You spec a Taigo (a jacked up hatchback) to this cost & it gets into the SUV segment - think Haval. But "we" are not ready for purchasing the latter because it's not a "brand name".

I am almost 100% certain that the wipers are rain sensing / automatic. You need to set it at the intermittent setting. But with that being said, auto wipers or not, outrageously priced.

    • @EarlPetersen
      @EarlPetersen ปีที่แล้ว

That is correct. You can set it to intermittent and the wipers will work automatically as soon as any water hits the windscreen. You can also set the sensitivity with a switch that indicates 4 drops from small to large situated above the lever for the wipers.

I hate that they package all of these as "extras" in the USA their different trim levels contain most of the different "extras". Things like the IQ drive should be standard on the higher trim. Same with autonomous braking which a safety feature that VW has in all their cars in the US, regardless of entry level models.
That said, you can't just say "oh it has the same engine and nothing really extra compared to the Polo" as far as I know the Polo hardly has the capability to have any of these extras like lane keep assist or autonomous braking, reverse camera etc.

VW is just going bananas with these “Polo-Platform-Based” clones… Which despite being good-looking and refined, but are rather bland and (let’s be frank about their pricing here,) they are very expensive for the amount of car you’re getting for the money. For that price I would rather pick another manufacturer that will undoubtedly give me more value for money, more features for less money than what VW asks for, and and and… VW is now seeing itself as a luxury brand people. It’s reached that point.

With R572k, go to the 2nd hand Market, your money will be appreciated. Even if I had million but I would not. With the bracket money, we are looking at polo gti, golf gti/ TCR/R, Audi S3. Of you're looking for an SUV, There's cx5, rav4, tiguan, troc, Forester, and etc. The market is ripped off
