There's more hope then ppl realize with him, IMO.
I feel like AOC is getting too much hate. Almost all rookie QBs have growing pains. He was probably still the second best rookie QB after Stroud this season and he clearly got better at the end of the season. I'd like to see him in a situation where your OC and offensive Head Coach are not fired a week before your pro debut. If it were up to me I would draft a guy and start AOC. Then let the rookie take over at some point or not depending on how they are doing. QB is important enough as a position that it is worth taking two chances. If AOC doesn't improve, we have the rookie-
He got way better after mcdoofus was gone, I believe it was 8 touchdowns and 0 picks ! With another off season to train, shoring up the offensive line this kid could be our franchise QB
There are a lot of circumstances that effect the game that don't end up on the stat sheet--too many to get into. Suffice it to say that he, an all of the other players on offense will be learning a new offense all starting on day one. He won't be the doe-eyed, third stringer who was suddenly thrown in mid-season with a limited playbook and instructions to not take any chances.
I think Oconnell has a ridiculous work ethic. Came in during a tumultuous , muddled time, had a rookie OC, transitional game plans, no offseason snaps as a starter, and was STILL the second ranked rookie. I think you’re under selling him.
9 TDs, 1 INT, 1200yds in his last 6 games… for a rookie that changed Head Coaches and took over in the middle of the season without the luxury of QB1 OTAs, Training Camp or preseason, he played great!
In that game you are showing he was 20/31 244YDS 2TD 0INT with 1 rushing TD 2 sacks a 110.1 rate and a win. He didn't get to work with the first team pretty much all season long. The players themselves wanted him to start against the bears and AP, who knows a lot more about football than you, made him the starter. Then there is the fact he played behind a poor OL and a up and down running attack with an OC who had never been an OC before and currently is still not an OC.
I’ve said this a dozen times, he was not drafted in the 5th round with the assumption he would be starting by week 4, (which was announced on a Thursday) and the permanent starter by week 9. If they had blocked for him against the Chargers, we might have had a chance. But the biggest point is that he got better as the season went on. Give him an off-season and let’s see a QB battle
He's a victim of the McDaniels playbook. With 10 hours of starting experience and minimal 1st team reps before starting. O'Connell will only get better with work.

I want OT with 1st. Penix if he is there in 2nd. Or Rattler if he is there in the 4th. Draft an IOL in the 3rd. Then let them compete for the starting QB with two good tackles flanking the good OLine.
Aiden had no preseason experience with the “1s”. He was their third string QB. The only thing in his game I thought was bad was his lack of mobility. The rest can be coached up. He’s probably not going to get another chance. Tough break.
Aiden was thrown into the fire after Jimmy G faltered. He performed admirably. It's a lot different when a rookie it told he is going to be the starter. He gets all the attention, all the reps, and all the time with the other players to bond because they expect the starter to be their guy. Whenever a backup is thrown into the situation, the team is going to rally, but ultimately be weary of their future. Purdy is an exception because he started the same week as the McCaffrey trade, who is arguably the most dynamic player in all of football the past 18 months. Normally, bench players get one game to win because the other team didn't plan for them, and then they crap the bed. Aiden was a starter, then not, then again, then not, then the entire team was completely blown up and rebuilt and this kid did really well. No other team goes through what the Raiders go through and I think the Aiden did a fantastic job with all that weight put on him from Adams and Meyers to make them look good.
I thought he played pretty well for a 4th rd pick that wasn't supposed to play and had no reps as a starter. He has potential, it could be backup potential and it could be starter potential we'll find out this year. One thing for certain is he has a good enough arm and the ball gets out on time a good amount especially for a rookie who had no reps as a starter and was thrown to the wolves. He deserves a chance to compete for the starting job.
If O’Connell was drafted in the first or second round, we’d be saying oh he’s a rookie give him time but since he was drafted in the fourth round and he had up and down season, are we comparing him to Bryce Young or CJ Stroud? I believe he has value in the league, I would like a more dynamic quarterback, but if things don’t work out smoothly, I take an offensive tackle or cornerback, but if Penix falls to us at 13, we may have to grab him back up for an offensive lineman or tackle tackle or tackle is a lefty we’ll see in three or four weeks
Peyton Manning led the nfl in INT’s his rookie season if memory serves. The biggest overlooked aspect and trait O’Connell has is intelligence. Can tell he’s super sharp. That matters.
You have to also take AOC's performance and align it with the drama of last season. The playbook was not written with him in mind. The O line was a work in progress. AP, I am sure, had to discard 2 thirds of the playbook as you can't rewrite the system half way through the season and expect players to perform. I'm hoping AOC gets a play book written around his style, is the starter and see him shine this season.
"trade up without breaking the bank"...easier said than done. Even for #3, which should assure them of a more productive QB, would take multiple picks; a dangerous proposition given their NEEDS at RT and CB, etc. Building protection around AOC, while creating a stone wall on D, is an obvious option given their amazing transformation on D when AC took over. One last comment; AOC is a very smart young man. He most assuredly has learned a great deal after his initial 9 games under fire. It will be interesting to see his progression, regardless of the QB room participants.
There are still viable starting CBs in FA we need to sign one but our CB room is still not bad. We need to draft a RT and we need a guard as well actually a swing tackle would be nice too. The point is we need help pretty badly at OL. I'd love to draft Fuaga and if Penix is sitting there at 18-31 we should package our 2nd pick with next years first and snag him. Next years draft isn't as good and we have some holes elsewhere and I don't want to trade any of this years picks this draft is especially strong in rounds 1-4 and our pick next year is probably in the 20s.
I do appreciate your realistic approach as well. the raiders weren't able to get in position to draft a qb and they got a middle of the road option in minshew who can hold down the fort while they build out the roster and who knows maybe 1 of them will prove to be a capable starter.
He was thrown to the wolves without a rookie friendly offensive playbook. Then a few weeks later he was given a watered down version with a play caller who never called a game in his life. He was asked to do even less. You realize all those wr's are wearing silicone gloves, right? If they get their hands on the ball there is no excuse for dropping a pass. In his first game the sack record was almost broken. Then he settled down and almost won the game. In his 2nd start he posted a 2.13 seconds release time. You can't just get a QB in the draft. Most of them will fail. The Raiders have done nothing to work with him. Name me your top 5 instances where the HC and OC were both fired mid season. A lot of these qb's fans want can't read a defense. They hold the ball a long time and get sacked. Some of them can't take a hit. Top 5 QB's in the draft are full of cripples. The Raiders kept their DC after a coaching change, rare. They could very well be looking to build around a game manager. There are no cheap trading up options. All draft picks matter. The main reason the Raiders are so bad is they can't draft anyone. 3 out of the last 4 1st rounders are OUT of football.
I would say his ceiling is a mid to low-tier starter. If that is the case unless you have an incredible team around him, you're not going to win the Super Bowl. I would rather not waste time trying to build around him and draft someone with higher potential and keep him around as a really good backup. Not sure where that leaves Minshew, but I understand wanting to go into the season with someone with significant starting experience and the contract is not outrageous.
Almost every rookie in NFL history has those same issues and Manning and Brady were statues and they did just fine. You guys just can't get over a 4th rd pick being our starter if he was a high pick with the same game play and tape you'd all be excited for the season especially since he's a very hard worker and totally invested. Usually players make the biggest jump in year 2 so we have to have 2 other QBs to assure a healthy competition and we should be good. I wouldn't be surprised if AOC beats the other 2 QBs out and starts.
One thing I LOVE about AOC is his "Brady base". Wide legs; calm, patient feet; great hip rotation and knee drive as he leans/steps into his delivery. He never seems rushed or anxious, very similar to Brady. I believe with time and reps, his eyes will settle and he'll look much like the best version of himself at Purdue. Could be a playoff-leading QB, for sure.
Even though AOC isn't the best he's far from a bum n deserves just a lil respect for playing good under the fire n chaos of last season. Do I want to draft someone better,of course but AOC deserves a lil respect. I don't know why it's so hard to give the guy a lil respect.
I'd definitely give this kid another chance! He delt with coach changes , basically threw him in there with the wolves.. he got hot the last 4 games or so ...
Thank you for this video just want to add some stats on Raiden Aiden Last 4 games 8 TD zero INT, last 5 games 9 TD one INT, and went 3 and 1 in AFC west. Probably no one will agree but my player comp for Aiden is Kurt Warner, we might see.
I usually agree with what you say. However ,on this one though I think you may be talking way to soon. He made a lot of good plays last season. Made some elite throws. Looked really good at times. Which by the way you chose to leave those out for some odd reason. He looked exactly what you would expect a 4th rd rookie that was thrown into the fire to look like. This team was a shit show when he became the starter. He persevered and helped our team get some Ws. Help lead this team to a W in arrowhead. Even if he didn’t complete a pass in the second half. He managed the game the way he was told to do. Did it perfectly. Give the kid some credit before you start calling him a backup QB that may have some good years in the nfl.
Id make the arguement at 3:40 that he threw it away not over throwing it. Why? Well for starters if he did complete the check down his teammate might have gotten himself hurt. That defender was ready and to protect his teammate he overthrown him to avoid him getting hurt & avoiding a intentional grounding. So i'll given Aiden the benefit of the doubt on that one
He did play better towards the latter part of the season. He's not a starter in my opinion but who knows. It's possible he could improve in the offseason but I'm not 100% confident he'll be the guy moving forward.
No, he's not the guy. Only the carr haters are saying give him a chance because they hyped him up during the pre season last year, and all he did was be bottom 5 in qb stats as a starter. Minshew is the dude who will win the job.
@modestopimpin4549 stop lying to yourself. After every pre season game, all the haters were saying we have the future of the franchise he's the real #4. Non-stop hype for pre season games and during the season nothing because they knew he wasn't the franchise saving qb they thought he was. That's why the raiders signed minshew. Raiders didn't win games because of O'Connell they won games thanks to the defense finally showing up.
@@mschanandlerbong4206 I'm a die hard raider fan n I never seen anything about him being a franchise QB. I watched every single game including preseason n I never heard that but he does deserve some respect
O'Connell is iffy.....but, he had a 50% win record.....which was far better than Justin Fields who had only a 35% win record....and was traded for a 6th round pick
I don't understand this next Brock purdy idea for Purdy it was easy because although SF didn't have the qb talent they had the positional talent and unfortunately not many teams offer a foundation such as the 9ers in terms of raw talent around the qb 49ers have an all pro tight end 2 all pro receivers an all pro RB and undoubtly one of the best LT’s ever
I disagree with your take. Aidan was guilty of holding the ball too long at times bcuz he was surveying the field. There is a reason why minshew can't keep a starter job. His weak arm limits the offense. He isn't better than Aidan in this offense. Aidans anticipation passes and throwing all over the field is what made him the second best rookie QB. He incorporated every wr, te, RB in the offense. Why Aidan succeeds in this offense. Bcuz he attacks the field, surveys the field, and can move the offense without turning the ball over.
@@mschanandlerbong4206 hahaha. Minshew and that weak arm. He would agitate Adams bcuz he throws lame duck passes. Can't use Tucker bcuz he can't get the ball past 35 yds. Aidan will beat minshew
DUDE he was a rookie. All rookies generally read once and throw especially with our sieve of an OLine last year. He was never supposed to play and went 5-4 under Pierce. He beat all 3 AFC west teams in the last 4 weeks of the season. Compare him to other rookies and he looks damn good. Those numbers that you said we ok for a rookie but not great are almost identical to Tom Brady's first 10 games, except OConnell threw for more yards. Yes there is a lot of hope. He'll start this year and I am fairly certain he'll be good. And then a bunch "Raider fans" will say he sucks no matter what because they wanted jayden Daniels. SMH Advice: Temper your expectations to that of a guy who has played 10 games.
If AOC was a first round pick people would be lauding how well he performed in his first year. It would be about giving him more reps and letting him develop. Instead it’s draft some higher profile rookie and throw him out to see how he does. Aka “create a QB cemetery.” Get somebody who shows some stuff and let him develop. Jordan Love style. Aaron Rodgers style.
AOC did fine last season. All rookies struggled aside from Stroud. He had a few stinkers like that chargers game but it was a terrible situation to get thrown into. And then he came back a few weeks later and did good considering the situation. Probably had all his coaches tell him priority not to turn the ball over. Honestly i think showed enough where i would not be upset to give him another chance. That said, im not sure if he will be getting another chance next season. The raiders seem to be wanting to draft a QB. But the problem is we got teams ahead of us that are also probably looking hard at QBs. So it might just not be in the cards for us. In the situation where we dont get a QB, AOC is the most likely starter, i think Minshew is gonna be a backup.
I'm going to have so much fun collecting all these "nay-sayer" comments about O'Connell. He'll beat out Minshew and surprise almost everyone. This guy is more than just solid, he's an NFL starter and will have a very long career.
I think your whole point is he's not the biggest guy. Whatever, but can he win? That's the bottom line. You can have all that arm talent all the throws at the end of the day. Can you win games. You can have good stats or elite stats and still lose games. It's about like you said managing the game and can you close it out and win make the right throws make the right reads at the end of the day. You have a w and someday you're hosting the Lombardy trophy
Dating myself, but O'Connell reminds me of Elway during his rookie year. It was pretty rough, John had 11 starts, 54.9 passer rating, 7 TDs, 14 INTs. I think (hope) Aiden could surprise people in year 2.
Yes I was there when Payton Manning was a rookie with Indy. So frustrating, I thought for sure he was a bust. That's why I'm hopeful for Aidan, he was better in his half year than Manning was in his full year at QB1 and with the proper off season development. That's why I don't want to give up on him until we see where he tops out at. If he tops out and its not good enough, so be it, move on.
@@Navigator001Manning was also a first round pick! 😆 so… you kinda have to role with him year 2 and 3… sitting around HOPING AOC can replicate that is beyond whimsical…
I'd be much more willing to give him more of a shot if he wasn't a 26 year old 2nd year player. People act like they can coach out his bad tendencies when he's literally older than some 4 year pros. He moves like a baby deer with clown shoes on in the pocket, and he air mails Davante at least 3 times a game. I'd buy the "He's a rookie" excuse more if he didn't do it literally every single time. People will say "Oh but he beat the Chiefs!" Yeah with 2 defensive touchdowns and not completing a pass after the 1st quarter. If you actually watch him play in the games and not just watch highlights and look at a stat sheet you'll see why people who don't want him as the long term answer feel that way. If you were to say "He can get us there with a Niners level team" I'd buy that, but people think we're gonna get it together fast enough for him to not turn 30 by the time we have that team around him.

Boom💯💯
That's exactly what it is... competition at QB, jobs won't be handed out....I have no issue with that
If AOC is the future Raiders quarterback, the Raiders have no future.
He's a victim of the McDaniels playbook. With 10 hours of starting experience and minimal 1st team reps before starting. O'Connell will only get better with work.
Also, PFF had him as the second best rookie QB in the class last year.
He also had BY FAR the best weapons of any rookie last year as well, don’t leave that part out…

Get real dude..
I want OT with 1st. Penix if he is there in 2nd. Or Rattler if he is there in the 4th. Draft an IOL in the 3rd. Then let them compete for the starting QB with two good tackles flanking the good OLine.
I think going check down after his 1st read was something that he was asked to do from coaches. do not turn the ball over was expected from him by AP
Aiden had no preseason experience with the “1s”. He was their third string QB. The only thing in his game I thought was bad was his lack of mobility. The rest can be coached up. He’s probably not going to get another chance. Tough break.
So you've decided that he is who he is after one HALF season of being QB1?
No other team goes through what the Raiders go through and I think the Aiden did a fantastic job with all that weight put on him from Adams and Meyers to make them look good.
he just needs a few years, getting better every year. Hoping anyways, his work ethic is top notch.
I hope they give him fair shot at qb1,give him a season to sucess or fair
If O’Connell was drafted in the first or second round, we’d be saying oh he’s a rookie give him time but since he was drafted in the fourth round and he had up and down season, are we comparing him to Bryce Young or CJ Stroud? I believe he has value in the league, I would like a more dynamic quarterback, but if things don’t work out smoothly, I take an offensive tackle or cornerback, but if Penix falls to us at 13, we may have to grab him back up for an offensive lineman or tackle tackle or tackle is a lefty we’ll see in three or four weeks
But he wasn't so let's end that conversation 🤙
@@M85619 Tom Brady, DC or Purdy either… draft situation… progress with personal development.
@@M85619he was better then young that's who needs to be replaced or redrafted
Peyton Manning led the nfl in INT’s his rookie season if memory serves. The biggest overlooked aspect and trait O’Connell has is intelligence. Can tell he’s super sharp. That matters.
He wasn't drafted to be a starter. He's not ready
As a Raider fan I’ve seen Derek Carr do some of the same things Aiden did as a rookie! Example: Carrs pick 6 to Jesse Bates! 😂😂😂
The 4:50 incompletion, the pocket is ollapsing on top of O'Connell. He cannot step into the throw, which is why it sails a bit on him.
No chance. We have seen enough, he's a statue in the pocket, can't read a defense, and misses too many wide open throws. He needs to be qb2 at best
Just because he’s not a big tall athletic superhuman of a QB dosent mean he can’t be successful.
Bruh... this dude was amazing... 3 strng, having to learn plays as he's starting?... sorry bruh I can't with you... 😂
Tom Brady who needs a better system
They called that fumble back for Aidan in the last clip
Id make the arguement at 3:40 that he threw it away not over throwing it. Why? Well for starters if he did complete the check down his teammate might have gotten himself hurt. That defender was ready and to protect his teammate he overthrown him to avoid him getting hurt & avoiding a intentional grounding. So i'll given Aiden the benefit of the doubt on that one
I think he has more potential than minshew which isn’t saying much
He did play better towards the latter part of the season. He's not a starter in my opinion but who knows. It's possible he could improve in the offseason but I'm not 100% confident he'll be the guy moving forward.
For the first time since week 3 2021 I have hope for the Raiders season

Non-stop hype for pre season games and during the season nothing because they knew he wasn't the franchise saving qb they thought he was. That's why the raiders signed minshew. My thoughts is that you have no clue
He played great for a rookie under those circumstances.
😂
@@mschanandlerbong4206 your welcome
@elsalsero417 remember minshew beat the raiders last season that's why I believe he can beat O'Connell for the starting job.
@@mschanandlerbong4206 hahaha.
Minshew and that weak arm. He would agitate Adams bcuz he throws lame duck passes. Can't use Tucker bcuz he can't get the ball past 35 yds.
Aidan will beat minshew
@elsalsero417 🤦 so you don't watch football. Minshew made some nice deep passes to beat the raiders last season, or did you forget that?🤷 🤔
DUDE he was a rookie.
Aka “create a QB cemetery.”
Get somebody who shows some stuff and let him develop. Jordan Love style. Aaron Rodgers style.
You didn't show ANY of the smokin' throws he made and he made a handful of them. Oh, and by the way: the mustache is a mistake.
If u don’t go qb early u got to get Spencer rattler in the 3rd big sleeper also assuming Penix and nix 1st rounders
He smashed charger second time got Coach fired

He'll beat out Minshew and surprise almost everyone. This guy is more than just solid, he's an NFL starter and will have a very long career.
AOC is a pretty good receiver every time they threw the ball back at him, he received it.
He gets his chance to compete for the job in training camp against minshew, only time will tell if he can be a starter
@4:00 i think he saw that there was nothing so he kinda threw it over both of them
Aiden just need to change his jersey number to something else beside #4. That was a Josh McDaniel ego move against a former player…
You know what sucks Jackson? My Raiders aren't good but we aren't bad enough to get a top QB. Being in no mans land just kinda sucks.
You have to just keep drafting QBs in rds 1-4 until you hit on one there are plenty of starters that weren't drafted in the 1st rd all over the NFL.
Keep in mind, he was a rookie doing what he was doing. He can only get better.
He was a 4th round pick
The line pushed back and hands in his face didn’t help, hopefully with the o line pick up and the new target in Brock bowers he will succeed
He only played a few games last year! 🤔🏈
Of course that kid threw bombs for the boilermakers and he was thrown in the fire mid season give him a full season at least jeez
