All our friends wish to learn more about tools to make stucco walls true and upright.
In other words, make your walls straight.
I am applying the plaster with my hawk and trowel, then using the darby to remove any low or high spots in the wall.
A darby is explicitly used on the brown coat and is a long trowel-looking tool with two handles.
The edges can be serrated or smooth and have one side smooth and the other serrated, so they are a personal reference tool for many plasterers.
Tip, If the weather is cool or chilly or towards the end of the day, use a serrated darby.
The serrated darby allows the stucco to dry out faster than a smooth darby.
When used properly, the serrated edges of the darby allow more air into the surface, thus drying the stucco much faster.
A smooth stucco darby will seal the stucco, allowing more time to wait until you have to hard rubber float it or sponge float.
A smooth stucco darby does to the basecoat stucco what a stucco trowel would do if passed over it; seals the air in much longer.
Using a stucco Darby versus a stucco trowel allows a large amount of wall to be squared off much more efficiently than just troweling alone.
The best thing about using a stucco darby is that it allows the user to remove any low or high spots in the wall.

Kirk you have such a unique way of putting on.when I first started watching your videos I thought wow this American plasterer isn't a patch on some English lads I know, and after watching a while I was just frankly amazed. The quality of your finishes is top notch, you've clearly got ridiculous levels of muscle memory and your a dedicated teacher and a good dad. Admiration and respect to your whole family from the UK. It has been a long time since commenting on your channel but it was you, years ago, who "taught" me how to stucco properly. You even personally answered more than several of my questions and for that I remain indebted. As a full time bricklayer I don't do stucco on a daily basis. But I did recently and it needed to be FLAT. My darby skills were not as good as I perceived them to be; your videos changed that and with some work I am now confident. So thank you for your willingness to share your skills with me.
excellent point. we create the imaginary wall as opposed to following the material. i plastered a similar size wall today. Your pride in what you do is contagious. i swear i here you over my shoulder when im putting mud on the wall. the guys that work with me when we do stucco work feed off my energy. i see them mocking me as i mock you. Your videos are wonderful and a relaxing treat after a day on the job.
+slingerjr ... Kirk takes pride in his plastering craft the same way I do with carpentry and hard work in general. Kirk and men like him were the ones i looked up to as a youngster. I believe all of our attitudes are similar.

Hi Wayne, I usually tell folks to allow the new stucco to cure at least 28 days so that the paint will adhere properly.
Most of the General contractors in my area use Kelly Moore Elastomeric coatings designed for a porous wall, or a comparable paint system to seal the walls.
I'm told heavy on the primer as thats what really makes a wall weather tight.

+Wayne Frazier Ha ha Wayne. I agree. I'm restoring an old house, and every time I start to run into trouble, I hear "ole Kirk" saying, "Nothing I can't handle." And then I relax, because I've been in trouble before, got out of it and made it right, and I know I can do it. So "ole Kirk" keeps me calm as I go! In fact, quite honestly, watching his videos has taught me to just slow down, and not worry if something takes longer that I thought it would (or should). Someone said to me the other day (I'm 6 years in on this restoration) that they marvel at my patience. But it really is about relaxing, and just working until I'm done and the job is right.

Hi Kirk, We just picked up two old houses in the So. Cal. High Desert. Both of them need some cement, stucco and maybe a little plaster work. Your videos are a HUGE help! In English "plaster" usually means a material used for the interiors of buildings, while "render" commonly refers to external applications.

Very true kirk, i think that you in the US are way more advanced than us in the UK. very rarely would you see a rendered house with any sort of finish rather than a float finish. Rendering in the UK is dying out in my opinion, new builds will mostly be brickwork, due to big companies thinking of a bigger profit than a good looking home. Thanks for your reply my friend.
