AIRA Start - TB-3 (a short tutorial)

  • AIRA gear is intuitive and easy to learn. It's part of what makes it so musically inspiring. But it also has a deep bag of tricks, and these can take time to discover and master. Whether you're curious about what AIRA can do, or just wondering where to begin, these videos provide a strong base for further exploration.
    This video is a short tutorial on the TB-3 Touch Bassline. Based on the wildly influential TB-303, the new TB-3 is a performance-ready bass synthesizer and hands-on sequencer with authentic sound and intuitive controls engineered to play.

    This thing is the most user friendly piece I've ever had. Its mint. Read zero instructions, had patterns lined up in minutes. Instant dance music. I'm mixing this with my streichfet groovesizer red and dr 660 and tc voice correct pedal. Its ducking gold

      It's weird, because this thing has gathered so much hate from users over the years, with main complaint being that it's completely counterintuitive and that you just end up "pressing random buttons and turning random knobs half the time". But reading its manual, it doesn't seem as bad as over half of Roland's gear, most things self explanatory and (mostly) where you expect them to be. One common complaint is inability to pass sound through its filters or control it via CV/Clock/Gate. But the price range it's in kind of suggests that it would be something simple. The only thing that I find sucks majorly is having to use a third party software to really alter its settings as a synth, that one cannot really do this easily or at all without a computer, which is sort of a waste of LED touchscreen

    I've watched this lady numerous times and just get enough of how she just does this with such fluidity. I mean she really knows what she's doing, and she's got those awesome rings which could come in really handy. Heck I just ordered my TB 3, so when I'm tired of you tubing I guess I'll tinker and do the same.

    Ive got the TB-3 and I guess Korgs go at an acid baseline , the Volca bass. The TB-3 does so much more and is easier to use and sound quality is excellent! I would say there are times where i prefer the korg for its analogue madness although the TB-3 isn't far behind .... Well done Roland! Pairs with the TR-8 beautifully!!

    I am not expert on this machine I have only just got it and I did think everything would be so high pitched and have ACID lines, I then put my recording into Ableton and transpose -14 and it was next level.

    What is the name of the presenter on these videos again? I remember seeing it once but forget... she had some other great videos. This is such a great tutorial and it's not only documentation but like an artwork watching her go through the actions as presented. (good editing as well!) I think ths original AIRA range really captured a good stance for Roland and the Japanese culture as well - not afraid to try new things, and seeing how well planned out all the AIRA stuff actually was (TR-8, MX-1, etc.) - now Roland has gone so many directions, it's like many companies in one! Which isn't bad, but I feel like for going more advanced, I'd rather have seen a modern MC-909 or similar - haven't really gotten the urge for the MC-707 that greatly for example, nor some of the others with more menu diving than the shortcuts on the AIRA. Menus are cool for startup option settings; otherwise, shortcuts are fun to learn, but please no more menus using three-character LCD screens, hehe! (especially not when units like MC-909 and the other big boxes used to have wonderfully elaborate yet easy-to-use monochrome GUIs... and the old Fantom boards too!)

    Could someone please answer this question, because I couldn't find an answer in the manual? When operating the TB-3, does Roland require the user to wear that goofy barbershop quartet hat, or is that optional? If so, hopefully a future firmware update will allow us to use it without the goofy hat.

    • @BendApparatus
      @BendApparatus 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you build it yourself?
      That's quite a premium for a replica.
      I have Behringer's clone which cost me a few $ over 100.
      The tb3 is instant fun and gratification in a live situation.
      Thought it's accent is questionable.
      The TD3 is a more sit down and program affair.
      Unless they got Gordon Ramsay for ears... party goers would be hard pressed to notice a difference...

    • @tB3o3tR9o9
      @tB3o3tR9o9 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BendApparatus my brother has the TD-3 & the RD-6 and behringer did very good job i must say. i once owned the RD-8 and it was fairly good too. i would prefer those clones in any case and avoid this Roland Aira & Boutique stuff. now i own also a RE-303, so there's no need for other 303 clones. yes, i built the SR-909 myself, but i'm not a electronic engineer tbh. you just need a little knowledge in soldering, instinctive feeling and most importantly, to stay organisezed during the build. among others, you have to deal with around 500 resistors of every size, which have to be soldered onto the board. that's quite alot. when i was done, the only bugs i had were bad wiring and a few broken Opamps which costs under 1 buck per pieces. with a little research and also by the help of others, i fixed it. there are a few Kits of the SR-909 left, the Black version. pick one up, you'll not regret. you could also sell it in a couple of years later with profit ;)

    • @BendApparatus
      @BendApparatus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tB3o3tR9o9 I agree on the boutique series. And have little interest in the Aira line.
      But the tb3 is a guilty pleasure.
      Instantly accessible with not even a need to program. Plus it makes all kinds of bizarre noises beyond it's admittedly ingenuine 303 sound.
      I also just picked up an MC101
      Digital? Yes but literally a full music production studio the size of a small brick. And it's sound can only be described as "polished to a luster"
      As you can see I'm not an analog purist. Though I own many many vintage and modern analog gear. I also own many vintage and modern digital gear.
      As long as the sound is pleasing.
      Synthesis weather analog or digital IS synthesis.
      I am looking for a analog/digital hybrid drum machine. So the 909 interests me.

    • @tB3o3tR9o9
      @tB3o3tR9o9 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BendApparatus oops, accidentally i was talking about the SR-909. actually, the comment was meant to somebody else i was talking to previously. the RE-303 i did not built myself no. got it new from a guy who already built hundrets of them! anyways...actually it does not matter if real, analog or digital. the final result only matters!

    ~roland don't actually do ANY tutorials on any of the Aira gear.
    there are a few little things you can figure out from this video, but most is really not showing you anything but showing off what a professional already adept at these sorts of devices can do with it.

      +Jose Marulanda Hi, no, what youre asking isnt possible you will need to reprogram the pattern in from step 7.. which should be too hard as you cna step through your pattern in Step Record mode. so you can write down each note inc. it's modifiers (slide & accent) might be time consuming but easily do-able.
