For those who don't know: 猪八戒/猪悟能 (Pigsy) wasn't exiled from heaven because he hit on just any woman. He had the balls to hit on 嫦娥 (Chang'e), the moon goddess herself! If you understand Chinese mythology, you'd know that Chang'e is _off limits_ to anyone because her heart is forever with her mortal husband 后羿 (Hou Yi).
He also looks like a pig because during the reincarnation cycle he accidentally fell into the 'reincarnate as pig' hole. Oops.

On a edit side-note, this moment is even funnier if you know the sizes & height of the characters. Wukong is said to be less than 4-ft tall, with Wujing being 12-ft. While Bajie/Wuneng's height is never said, given his long snout alone is said to be 3-ft long, he's likely at least around 10-ft or more.

As he walked further, a violent mountain gust toppled a dead tree, which rolled
up to him. Pounding his chest and stamping his feet, he cried, “Elder Brother!
Why did you do this? I told you I would not try to deceive you anymore. Why
did you have to change into a tree to strike at me?” He proceeded still further
and saw in the air a white-necked old crow, which squawked several times
overhead. He said again, “Elder Brother, aren’t you ashamed of yourself? I told
you I wouldn’t lie anymore. Why did you still change into an old crow? Are you
trying to eavesdrop on me again?” But this time Pilgrim, you see, did not follow
him; he was simply ridden with suspicion and surmise, and we shall speak no
more of him for the moment.

Wukong in his chapter: kicks EVERYONE'S ass and can't be damaged, not even by the things that are supposed to insta-kill him.
Wukong during the journey: evenly matched with any and every demon that isn't fodder.

for what it's worth, I once tried to write a chapter where Neh-za (prince nata) actually explains why that is. It's a matter if, 'as you grow strong, so do others'. In the 500 years wu-kong was sealed, Gods and the demons they fight trained to reach his strength.

Sun is cunning, using tricks most of the time rather than his own strength, he is sometimes a bit of an ass, steadily learning throughout the story to *not* murder anyone he sees when Tripitaka isn't there to scold him for it. Idk if this describes Goku as well but despite him being based on Wukong, they seem very different.
sandy's river is actually supposed to be a sand river in the original language, hence 'sandy' and why the horse does nothing.

His name in Chinese is Sha Wujin, "Sha" in this case is the character for sand, hence Sandy. Also, I always thought the flowing sands river was just the river's name, not to imply that the river itself was meant to be sand, but I could be wrong.

Demon powers can do that but they can only hold form for a certain amount of time. The more you practice the better, but it's like flexing or bakugo from mha explain about quirks and the limitations unless worked and practiced on. Shippo from inuyasha is a great example of shape shifting limitations

No, the monk is the main character, but he comes from the Frodo school of main characters. Literally everyone in his party is cooler and more capable than he is, yet he's the one who must complete the main quest.

To be fair pigsy is the reincarnation of the pigsy from the book so they're not the exact same.
Besides, in season 4 it's shown that Pigsy doesn't connect nor associate himself with his past life. Even going as far as showing distaste when being compared to it.
And Chang'e and he turn out to be kindred spirits thanks to their love of cooking which is lovely! Good to know she doesn't hold a grudge

There actually is a Chinese animation series as a mostly straight adaption, nothing shonen but it was the childhood of alot of people, also a TV show which is considered on of the classics until this day

The one and only time the phrase "relatively hard working" will ever be applied to Pigsy
I feel like a decent explanation for the near-constant divine intervention is that the Jade emperor set up a rule that his court can’t intervene, but he can’t enforce it, as a good chunk of the court agreed that Tripitaka and his group Desperately need help. So members of the court are sneaking out to intervene during when they can. The Emperor is not omnipotent, which is shown by how he only finds out about Sun Wukong’s shenanigans through the reports sent in by others and what he himself witnesses. As he stays in the palace attending to his government duties, only certain people will be in his presence at a given time, depending on how his schedule works. If a specific person is missing, the other court members most likely have some alibi or excuse ready, with help from G.S Venus.
Then they meet a tiger demon who introduses humself by RIPING OFF HIS OWN SKIN!

Trippitaka’s the player who keeps canceling each session, meaning that he has to get kidnapped to preserve the story (properly speaking, the Heart Sutra should be super helpful, but his player’s never there to use it)
Sandsy was originally introduced as a way to teach the players not to be murder hobos, before another player asked to be brought in and the DM was like “Shit, uh, play this guy.”
And all the help from heaven is because of an overly protective DM who feels bad about letting his players fail.... though it’s not necessarily his fault. I mean, all the encounters are balanced for 3 characters, but Trippitaka keeps canceling!

Watching this series you can really tell just how much “inspiration” they took from this legend and the characters for a lot of shonen anime. Heck, Inuyasha almost follows this narrative to a T with how they pick up party members and how Inuyasha was tamed with beads of subjugation

@@moleculegirl yeah, I think he's like thousands of times immortal. Each peach, each pill, each drink of wine... Otherwise the Buddha could've just ended him but instead buried him under a mountain because even he wasn't able to take away all that immortality from Monkey.
Actually, the issue is sun wukong came out of like a super awesome rock. Sun wukong isn’t made of flesh, but of rock, so those attacks do nothing, he’s like a super durable rock😅😅 (and the rock he came out of was a part of the 7 coloured rock nu wa used to mend the sky, so yeah super powerful origins)
I'm currently reading the book itself, and it looks like Tripitaka also gains immortality in chapter 26 by eating some magic fruit? There's so many variations on immortality in this novel that I can't really tell what the difference is. Though it seems to me like eating some fruit is a way easier method than undergoing countless years of Taoist training.
As a long time dragon ball fan and recent Journey to the West fan, i absolutely adore all the goofy references to the show that references this book. Wukong having goku's hair for all of one frame was delightful!

Well... there just comes a point in every adventure story/campaign where the narrative has to take a few... erm... "leaps of logic"... so things like this crop up.
