This episode is basically “Monkey slowly becoming self-aware of him and his situation and is not pleased.”
Yeah, I think that's possibly the point of this. It's not just a trip to get the Scriptures, it's Son Wukong's own journey to be a better person.

The entire Journey to the West is can basically be summed up as
Wukong learning to get along with Tripitaka
Sandy learning not to listen to Pigsy

@@GlalGamingPanda Being a dragon really isn't indicative of power in Chinese mythology - keep in mind that the Dragon Kings of the Four Seas (the most powerful dragons, one of which is the horse's dad) were scared shitless by a single monkey. Honestly White Dragon is such a tiny blip on the journey power scale he might as well be a horse. Buddha does reward him at the end of the journey though!

You know, rewatching the series, it’s kinda funny and maybe purposeful that Sun is getting more mature as the journey continues. In Sun’s origin part of the story he was so irresponsible and wild but now he’s more of an underpaid babysitter.

I love rewatching this series and seeing that one of the first things he did on the journey was kill a whole bandit group then let Tripitaka sleep while a monetary burned down because he couldn't be bothered. So much growth

Fun fact 1: Kuanyin is pissed not at her pet goldfish missing, but for some reason that her enlightenment speech didn't enlighten it but instead turned it into a demon (maybe its too boring)
Fun fact 2: Buddha did not directly say Lao tsu because Lao tsu is the head of all Taoists, you could say the only person that rivals in power with the buddha, so they are kinda rivals in a sense (religious beliefs rivals ya know)

There are no need for restrain really. Because of Pigsy's flaws he ended up in a lot of trouble and fell easily for Wukong's many pranks, so he ended up being a source of entertainment/a clown for the group.
On one hand, he’s probably also immortal

@@StarPichu12 Yeah, but he also has character flaws. The most massive one being how ridiculously impulsive he is, although that stands to reason seeing as he’s a monkey. Mary Sues don’t have ‘character’ flaws, in story; but that in itself constitutes a massive writing flaw. They’re absolutely perfect and can do no wrong, and any conflict they’re involved in is never their fault, because that’s how people like to imagine life. Sun Wukong may end almost every conflict with his OP nature, but he also starts his fair share of conflicts by being an impulsive dumbass.

Solves all the problems = overpowered
Never causes any of the problems (and likely also solves them) = Mary Sue
because Mary Sues are what the author wants to be, even if it’s not a straight up self insert; they may have flaws (though they probably won’t be acknowledged), because the author doesn’t even notice writing them in, but nothing that happens to them is ever their fault. It’s an enticing fantasy, not having to take responsibility for anything. For that reason, Mary Sues pretty much never experience character growth. Being overpowered is a power fantasy, which is somewhat different.

The undisciplined human mind (in the form of Sun Wukong) becoming constrained and directed through spiritual power (in the form of a magic headache spell) wielded by the Superego/forebrain/maybe I wanna say Yang(?) (in the form of Tripataka). Of course he's becoming self-aware, that has to be part of growing towards enlightenment, yeah?

@@guggelguggel7491 I haven't looked it up at all, I'm just going off of the idea that Monkey's symbolism is incredibly blatant, with that in mind, the magic seal being religion or spirituality holding the power to rebuke and restrain the otherwise feral and uncivilized psyche of the unenlightened mind is equally apparent. From that, what Tripataka represents can only be the answer to the question "what aspect of human psychology is it that is empowered by spirituality to control the base aspects of psychology".
The reason why I think Tripataka must represent some aspect of the human mind/spirit/humanity in general is that everyone else does. Red previously stated in iirc episode 1 (I binged the whole series recently) that the horse represents human will, so if the horse is human will, the pig is gluttonous hedonism, Monkey is the undisciplined and atavistic base drives, so that leaves Tripataka as the most spiritual and high-minded parts of the human psyche. But not a totally enlightened being in himself, because enlightenment is all about balance. You can't represent only a part of what a person is and also be a truly complete and spiritually fulfilled person in and of yourself.
The other point I'd like to point out is how Monkey keeps recognizing dangers that Tripataka fails to. Which I find extremely interesting and incredibly important, because enlightenment is not pure Superego. Tripataka is virtuous, but he is not the end point of this journey, and Monkey learning and growing to become more like Tripataka is not a one-way street. There is value in those base instincts that Monkey is so in touch with. Not just combat ability, but as an aspect of being a complete person. If Tripataka were meant to represent someone who already has enlightenment, then the message doesn't make sense to me. It seems clear in the story that Tripataka is also in need of growth, and in need of life lessons. Why would he be going on this journey if the thing he represents were the endpoint of the journey?
And just as an aside, I have no idea how to phrase this without resorting to Freudian terminology. It fits incredibly well, and it blows my mind that it could line up so perfectly across thousands of years and totally different cultures. I'm sure the ancient Chinese had their own terminology, which I'm only assuming at an educated guess probably related to Yin and Yang somehow, but to my Eurocentric brain, I look at this and all I'm seeing is Id and Superego.
And of course, all this is just my own interpretation. I haven't even read the original story, let alone researched it at all. I could be off-base on this.
It's even possible that I am misunderstanding what the phrase "pure enlightened heart" is meant to imply. I can agree with the "pure" part at least. If someone more familiar with Buddhist/Taoist/Confucian spirituality tells me that I just don't understand what "enlightened" means, then I guess maybe I do agree with that description and what I'm arguing over is just me not understanding the exact terminology.
Nobody tell Pigsy (and red) but the journey to the west actually lasts 14 YEARS LONG. But at the end of it they all end up becoming pretty OP (yes even pigsy)

-Tripitaka gets captured
-Monkey fights demon

-Random god who is related to demon comes down and instantly defeats demon
-Tripitaka is rescued and they continue the journey
(Optional, Sandy does something)
And the dragon horse does absolutely nothing.

Basically Just a ancient D&D campaign now, where the win condition is someone in your party you have to escort.
DM keeps campaign going because he can throw whatever he wants at the party and not get accused of railroading. 😅😆
and monkey is just that one person who figured out how to break the system, made a really broken character out of it, and now the gm is disregarding the rulebook in order to stop him from breaking the entire campaign

Fun Fact: Mantis Shrimps have 12 color receptors, and can see into ultraviolet and infrared spectrums. A probable cause for this is that mantis shrimps also have unique patterns of colors on their iridescent shells that are only visible in those expanded spectrums. This seems like one day the shrimp's eyes evolved seeing extra light rays by accident, and inadvertently unlocked new colors to put in their skin pigmentations to attract mates. This has evidently gone into an evolutionary arms-race of color perception and coloration where they've evolved more and more wider ranges of light spectrums in their pigmentations and those who can't see that get left behind and mates that CAN see the beautiful new colors get a mate in the woman shrimp with new colors etc. Etc. Etc, and basically mantis shrimps can see all sorts of colors and use that to see the cool new colors their mates come in that our puny 8 human color receptors can't see.
So you’re saying the key to ultraviolet sight was the power of love all along?
So I'm super late replying to this, but just wanted to point a couple things out. One, the extra color receptors that mantis shrimp have don't really function in the same way ours do, in that the overlap between receptors is what enables us to see such a huge variety of colors in the visible spectrum. They do see into the UV range, but mostly seem to only really see the 12 colors associated with their receptors. Two, their physical coloring and unique visual color range likely evolved in tandem, each set of mutations reinforcing the other. This doesn't make them any less fascinating though, if you ask me. They're awesome and awesomely unique animals.

Yeah, like the other commenter said, it's because they are going at Tripitaka's pace. It's also an example of the journey being what causes the needed character development, and what they go through on the way to their destination is what really matters. Just look at Monkey this episode, he's already improved a lot as a person and has become more aware of his flaws, only because of all the trials they have gone through on the journey itself.
It is really funny though that it took Monkey about 5 minutes to get to the Buddha.
Also, why is every demon on equal power with Monkey while the monke basically trashed all of heaven except the Buddha?

I like how Sun Wukongs reputation is catching up to his ego at this point. When the story began he wanted to be called Great Sage Over Heaven and thought he deserved the highest station in the celestial order. Fast forward five hundred years plus eight more, and everyone is taking him just as seriously as he wanted them to, the heavenly court answers his calls for aid and mountain spirits are acting fearfully respectful towards him. And by now he's developed enough to actually prove he IS kind of superior to them after all by being able to keep a level head on his shoulders when things don't go their way.

@@frenato00 technically it was never established whether they were dangerous. It was the bright light that startled heaven. No one ever really actually explains if it is a power, or if it was a side-effect of being born. Monkey never hurt anyone with it, nor has he used it more than once.

I think the third slice is "Demon-infested town." Maybe it's exclusively demons, maybe it's controlled by demons, maybe demons are attacking, but it's a town and you're dealing with demons.

I was reading an abridged version of the original, and way back when Monkey was hanging out in Heaven, he was only using abridged versions of titles to the most important deities and addressing everyone else as “Brother.” Which didn’t sound too bad to me, until I remembered how incredibly formal and hierarchical Heaven is, and that he’s essentially going around calling everyone “Bro.”

About the gold fish part, you missed the dark side of the story: Kuanyin literally slaughtered the entire company of gold fish's demon army with a flood and killed off every last one of Gold Fish's minions and demon allies in that valley.

What puzzled me was that Horsey could easily turn back to a dragon at one point when he disguised as a female dancer and fought against a demon when the other 3 (Not include Wukong) got captured.

Like, he's gotten help from Guanyin in the past but that's partly why he was as respectful to her bad day as he was (which was a lot for him) and then all these warriors of Heaven being on the same side as him in a battle for I believe the very first time? And when they've got the same goal they're excited to see his fighting prowess and he's being surprisingly reasonable and polite and was even the one to notice that Lao Tzus pet was missing? Good for him, character growth and people who had reason to hate him before got to see it!

I remember first seeing this series when I was a scrub getting my master’s degree. Now I am married, got a job and have a 9 month old kid, and praise the Buddha I saw this pop into my feed today. First, the chapter titles are ridiculously long, like chapter one is called "The Divine Root Conceives and the Spring Breaks Forth, As the Heart’s Nature Is Cultivated, the Great Way Arises." Second, this video covers chapters 47-52 out of 100, so yay! We're halfway through this saga! So, at this rate we should be done by .... 2025?

@Estefana Hornea thx, though I'm not sure. There was this Quan-yin (or however it's spelled) disciple, Mokshu?, And this guy with third eye, though that definitely wasn't him, he looked completely different. I recall this guy from some other situation, just can't remember which
@@witoldtadeusz it’s definitely the prince guy, not the disciple Moksa(??? sorry I can’t spell). The character design is the same plus in the OG video Monkey is like “What are you, 12?” To the prince character. To Moksa(???) he’s like “can I fight someone who can legally drink?”
Prince Nezha is one of the first warriors to go after Wukong, and is actually pretty powerful, after the fight they became friends.
