You know, rewatching the series, it’s kinda funny and maybe purposeful that Sun is getting more mature as the journey continues. In Sun’s origin part of the story he was so irresponsible and wild but now he’s more of an underpaid babysitter.
I love rewatching this series and seeing that one of the first things he did on the journey was kill a whole bandit group then let Tripitaka sleep while a monetary burned down because he couldn't be bothered. So much growth

I like how Sun Wukongs reputation is catching up to his ego at this point. When the story began he wanted to be called Great Sage Over Heaven and thought he deserved the highest station in the celestial order. Fast forward five hundred years plus eight more, and everyone is taking him just as seriously as he wanted them to, the heavenly court answers his calls for aid and mountain spirits are acting fearfully respectful towards him. And by now he's developed enough to actually prove he IS kind of superior to them after all by being able to keep a level head on his shoulders when things don't go their way.

There are no need for restrain really. Because of Pigsy's flaws he ended up in a lot of trouble and fell easily for Wukong's many pranks, so he ended up being a source of entertainment/a clown for the group.

@@guggelguggel7491 I haven't looked it up at all, I'm just going off of the idea that Monkey's symbolism is incredibly blatant, with that in mind, the magic seal being religion or spirituality holding the power to rebuke and restrain the otherwise feral and uncivilized psyche of the unenlightened mind is equally apparent. From that, what Tripataka represents can only be the answer to the question "what aspect of human psychology is it that is empowered by spirituality to control the base aspects of psychology". The reason why I think Tripataka must represent some aspect of the human mind/spirit/humanity in general is that everyone else does. Red previously stated in iirc episode 1 (I binged the whole series recently) that the horse represents human will, so if the horse is human will, the pig is gluttonous hedonism, Monkey is the undisciplined and atavistic base drives, so that leaves Tripataka as the most spiritual and high-minded parts of the human psyche. But not a totally enlightened being in himself, because enlightenment is all about balance. You can't represent only a part of what a person is and also be a truly complete and spiritually fulfilled person in and of yourself. The other point I'd like to point out is how Monkey keeps recognizing dangers that Tripataka fails to. Which I find extremely interesting and incredibly important, because enlightenment is not pure Superego. Tripataka is virtuous, but he is not the end point of this journey, and Monkey learning and growing to become more like Tripataka is not a one-way street. There is value in those base instincts that Monkey is so in touch with. Not just combat ability, but as an aspect of being a complete person. If Tripataka were meant to represent someone who already has enlightenment, then the message doesn't make sense to me. It seems clear in the story that Tripataka is also in need of growth, and in need of life lessons. Why would he be going on this journey if the thing he represents were the endpoint of the journey? And just as an aside, I have no idea how to phrase this without resorting to Freudian terminology. It fits incredibly well, and it blows my mind that it could line up so perfectly across thousands of years and totally different cultures. I'm sure the ancient Chinese had their own terminology, which I'm only assuming at an educated guess probably related to Yin and Yang somehow, but to my Eurocentric brain, I look at this and all I'm seeing is Id and Superego. And of course, all this is just my own interpretation. I haven't even read the original story, let alone researched it at all. I could be off-base on this. It's even possible that I am misunderstanding what the phrase "pure enlightened heart" is meant to imply. I can agree with the "pure" part at least. If someone more familiar with Buddhist/Taoist/Confucian spirituality tells me that I just don't understand what "enlightened" means, then I guess maybe I do agree with that description and what I'm arguing over is just me not understanding the exact terminology.

It’s amazing how the author managed to make monkey so overpowered but not a mary sue since his enemies challenge him in ways that he can’t easily solve. Even though he’s really powerful, he very rarely uses brute force to solve the problems, often preferring to find creative solutions and getting allies to help him out.
Admittedly 50% of all of his problems are solved by flying to Guan Yin or the Buddha and complain. Frankly, those two should just permanently join the fellowship so Monkey can save on airfare expenses.
I think the third slice is "Demon-infested town." Maybe it's exclusively demons, maybe it's controlled by demons, maybe demons are attacking, but it's a town and you're dealing with demons.
Fun fact: combination of Chinese characters for “mountain” (山 - "shan") and "water" (水 - "shui") literally means "landscape" ("山水" - "shanshui"). So yeah, it is pretty much mountains and rivers all the way.
Nobody tell Pigsy (and red) but the journey to the west actually lasts 14 YEARS LONG. But at the end of it they all end up becoming pretty OP (yes even pigsy)
Yeah, like the other commenter said, it's because they are going at Tripitaka's pace. It's also an example of the journey being what causes the needed character development, and what they go through on the way to their destination is what really matters. Just look at Monkey this episode, he's already improved a lot as a person and has become more aware of his flaws, only because of all the trials they have gone through on the journey itself. It is really funny though that it took Monkey about 5 minutes to get to the Buddha.

It will instakill any foe unless they're strong enough for him to have no chance at winning. It's actually a logical way of testing an enemy's strength. If they die he wins and if they live he's b'out to have a bad time and should probably run away.
I remember first seeing this series when I was a scrub getting my master’s degree. Now I am married, got a job and have a 9 month old kid, and praise the Buddha I saw this pop into my feed today. thats essentially what he does on this trip. one of the theories is that he knows they are heavenly animals plus the monk needs to come into danger to complete his quest , and thats why he seems weaker on the trip than when he fought heaven, hes holding back because he doesnt actually want to killed the god's pets and he can just go ask around for the real owner to come collect their pet. like the whole water thing, the reason given why hes weak in water is because he has to keep up a anti-water spell with one hand, so hes literally fighting with one hand tied any time hes in water, but like na zha, he has a massive 3 headed war form, and more importantly, it comes with 6 arms, allowing him to keep up extra spells making him literally invulnerable to all attacks in nearly all environments, not to mention even unarmed he can one punch mountains out of existent, so losing a staff isn't going to stop him really.
I kinda wanna know if the part where Monk gets mad at Monkey (again) and throws him out while Monkey sits in the woods crying and writing poetry has happened yet. If it has i'm shocked Red didn't cover it since it's hysterical, if not then i look forward to seeing that animated ^^

Honestly I’d be pretty surprised to if I was one of guan yin’s worshippers or sun himself, seeing her as disheveled as she is when she’s supposedly a compassionate god with rather little emotions other than that, and she’s so composed and all that crap. Sun Wukong is (pardon the pun)the Skill Monkey-Rogue/Fighter Multiclass, Tripitaka is a Monk/Cleric with the Way of Pacifist, Pigsy is obviously a Bard, Sandy is the groups Warlock(rather competent but his power has pitiful uses) and the Dragon-Horse is obviously a Druid, who has way to much fun staying in Wildshape to actually do something useful

I'm almost in awe of how absolutely correct this is and mad at myself for not making that connection sooner. GM pitches a story about bringing his GM-NPC, a Buddhist monk named Tripataka, to India. The first player runs a super immortal Monkey with a billion powers, the second runs a dumb pig man that uses a rake as his main weapon. The GM has no choice but to meet madness with madness.

You know, rewatching the series, it’s kinda funny and maybe purposeful that Sun is getting more mature as the journey continues. In Sun’s origin part of the story he was so irresponsible and wild but now he’s more of an underpaid babysitter.

I like how Sun Wukongs reputation is catching up to his ego at this point. When the story began he wanted to be called Great Sage Over Heaven and thought he deserved the highest station in the celestial order. Fast forward five hundred years plus eight more, and everyone is taking him just as seriously as he wanted them to, the heavenly court answers his calls for aid and mountain spirits are acting fearfully respectful towards him. And by now he's developed enough to actually prove he IS kind of superior to them after all by being able to keep a level head on his shoulders when things don't go their way.

There are no need for restrain really. Because of Pigsy's flaws he ended up in a lot of trouble and fell easily for Wukong's many pranks, so he ended up being a source of entertainment/a clown for the group.

@@guggelguggel7491 I haven't looked it up at all, I'm just going off of the idea that Monkey's symbolism is incredibly blatant, with that in mind, the magic seal being religion or spirituality holding the power to rebuke and restrain the otherwise feral and uncivilized psyche of the unenlightened mind is equally apparent. From that, what Tripataka represents can only be the answer to the question "what aspect of human psychology is it that is empowered by spirituality to control the base aspects of psychology".
The reason why I think Tripataka must represent some aspect of the human mind/spirit/humanity in general is that everyone else does. Red previously stated in iirc episode 1 (I binged the whole series recently) that the horse represents human will, so if the horse is human will, the pig is gluttonous hedonism, Monkey is the undisciplined and atavistic base drives, so that leaves Tripataka as the most spiritual and high-minded parts of the human psyche. But not a totally enlightened being in himself, because enlightenment is all about balance. You can't represent only a part of what a person is and also be a truly complete and spiritually fulfilled person in and of yourself.
The other point I'd like to point out is how Monkey keeps recognizing dangers that Tripataka fails to. Which I find extremely interesting and incredibly important, because enlightenment is not pure Superego. Tripataka is virtuous, but he is not the end point of this journey, and Monkey learning and growing to become more like Tripataka is not a one-way street. There is value in those base instincts that Monkey is so in touch with. Not just combat ability, but as an aspect of being a complete person. If Tripataka were meant to represent someone who already has enlightenment, then the message doesn't make sense to me. It seems clear in the story that Tripataka is also in need of growth, and in need of life lessons. Why would he be going on this journey if the thing he represents were the endpoint of the journey?
And just as an aside, I have no idea how to phrase this without resorting to Freudian terminology. It fits incredibly well, and it blows my mind that it could line up so perfectly across thousands of years and totally different cultures. I'm sure the ancient Chinese had their own terminology, which I'm only assuming at an educated guess probably related to Yin and Yang somehow, but to my Eurocentric brain, I look at this and all I'm seeing is Id and Superego.
And of course, all this is just my own interpretation. I haven't even read the original story, let alone researched it at all. I could be off-base on this.
It's even possible that I am misunderstanding what the phrase "pure enlightened heart" is meant to imply. I can agree with the "pure" part at least. If someone more familiar with Buddhist/Taoist/Confucian spirituality tells me that I just don't understand what "enlightened" means, then I guess maybe I do agree with that description and what I'm arguing over is just me not understanding the exact terminology.

It’s amazing how the author managed to make monkey so overpowered but not a mary sue since his enemies challenge him in ways that he can’t easily solve. Even though he’s really powerful, he very rarely uses brute force to solve the problems, often preferring to find creative solutions and getting allies to help him out.
Also his weakness of fighting in water makes sense since he literally drops like a rock because he is one

Yeah, like the other commenter said, it's because they are going at Tripitaka's pace. It's also an example of the journey being what causes the needed character development, and what they go through on the way to their destination is what really matters. Just look at Monkey this episode, he's already improved a lot as a person and has become more aware of his flaws, only because of all the trials they have gone through on the journey itself.
It is really funny though that it took Monkey about 5 minutes to get to the Buddha.
Also, why is every demon on equal power with Monkey while the monke basically trashed all of heaven except the Buddha?

It will instakill any foe unless they're strong enough for him to have no chance at winning. It's actually a logical way of testing an enemy's strength. If they die he wins and if they live he's b'out to have a bad time and should probably run away.

I remember first seeing this series when I was a scrub getting my master’s degree. Now I am married, got a job and have a 9 month old kid, and praise the Buddha I saw this pop into my feed today. The nostalgia and joy is overwhelming. And I hope to see this series conclude before my death 50 years from now. Please keep up the good work. Best wishes from China.

thats essentially what he does on this trip. one of the theories is that he knows they are heavenly animals plus the monk needs to come into danger to complete his quest , and thats why he seems weaker on the trip than when he fought heaven, hes holding back because he doesnt actually want to killed the god's pets and he can just go ask around for the real owner to come collect their pet. like the whole water thing, the reason given why hes weak in water is because he has to keep up a anti-water spell with one hand, so hes literally fighting with one hand tied any time hes in water, but like na zha, he has a massive 3 headed war form, and more importantly, it comes with 6 arms, allowing him to keep up extra spells making him literally invulnerable to all attacks in nearly all environments, not to mention even unarmed he can one punch mountains out of existent, so losing a staff isn't going to stop him really.

Honestly I’d be pretty surprised to if I was one of guan yin’s worshippers or sun himself, seeing her as disheveled as she is when she’s supposedly a compassionate god with rather little emotions other than that, and she’s so composed and all that crap. Basically Just a ancient D&D campaign now, where the win condition is someone in your party you have to escort.

Conclusion, Sun’s character development is holding on strong, Pigsy got his ass handed to him by a goldfish, and there is now a very small wheel that is spun to determine random encounters for the group like a game of dnd. Spoiler alert: most of them involve a form of demon.
Let's be honest, that IS the earliest D&D group. Sun Wukong is (pardon the pun)the Skill Monkey-Rogue/Fighter Multiclass, Tripitaka is a Monk/Cleric with the Way of Pacifist, Pigsy is obviously a Bard, Sandy is the groups Warlock(rather competent but his power has pitiful uses) and the Dragon-Horse is obviously a Druid, who has way to much fun staying in Wildshape to actually do something useful
Between the self-awareness jokes on Monkey's behalf, and the "Do you still have that sassy 12 year old??" I'm absolutely cackling.
