Is it possible to beat Super Mario 64 with JUST a Wii Nunchuk? In this challenge video, we will find out just that as we try to get as many stars as possible with only the control stick and 2 buttons on the nunchuk! Pinning this cause a lot of people aren't seeing it
Lots of comments asking about shaking the nunchuk. Of course I thought of this too lol, but the motion control wasn't detectable as an input. Also, Wii nunchuk control stick isn't clickable 🙃
use an arduino to read the nunchuk data and turn it into keyboard keys

However since there is only one button and a stick this might limit Mario's abilities to Jumping And movement
This might make getting the first star impossible unless the button is mapped to attack so i dont see that run being possible

I know your pain, when I was playing the DS remake for the first time, the R button on my DS broke and I couldn't ground-pound.
it's actually possible to get the 100-coin star in dire dire docks! that course has a loading point, in the middle of the tunnel, so you can clone the yellow coin ring spawners and therefore collect more coins from them than are supposed to exist (in fact, an unlimited amount). it's hard to do of course, especially with only a nunchuk, but entirely possible. by a similar token, you can get the caged star in that course by cloning it from the loading point, thereby skipping both the metal and vanish caps!
in fact, the vanish cap itself is also accessible - there are several glitches that can be exploited to access that course without draining the moat, including a pu movement strategy. i suspect tool assistance is required to make that movement precise enough, but it's theoretically doable!
Can't do PU movement without very high speed, and the only way you're doing that in the starting area is by BLJing, which requires the Z button.
We don't have a Z button.
tip with the jumping box if you land on the blue coin switch with the final jump it activates it
If you count using the bomb clip, you should also count using cloning to get 100 coins and the star in the cage in DDD, clipping inside the mountain of THI or clipping into the vanish cap switch palace.
Also, you can actually collect the red coins in SSL using the Fly Guys as trampolines.

This is actually easier than you think. You just need (while small) to do a dive into the crease between the mountain and the ground. Do this on the side closest to the pipe (the one with the chuckya). I believe this works because of the way Mario slides after diving, most of his body goes under the ground if he changes angles quickly at the very bottom. I consider myself a Mario 64 amateur, and I can usually do it after about half a minute of trying.
This video was *REALLY* great! Had a great time watching it, at first. Had second thoughts on if the challenge was possible 😂😂😂

You can get the chain chomp star get a box that you can hold and place it in the fence and it will glitch you in

The Nunchuck has motion controls. You can shake the Nunchuck. That could theoretically replace something.

Wouldn't it have been way better to replace B with Z? I mean, attacking is mostly useless aside from jumpkicking up slopes.
Incorrect, attacking is required to beat the game.
The Nunchuk has 3-axis accelerometers. You could have mapped tilt to the C buttons and swinging down for ground-pounding.

Challenge started at the cutscene. He probably used the start button on the Wii Remote.

These challenges have become my favorite thing in the world
The red coins in Shifting Sand Land are technically possible. The tornado near the pyramid entrance makes one of them easy, and Fly Guys and the Koopa shell can be used for the others, though those are extremely tricky. I've gotten them with the Koopa shell in the past myself, but the jumps have to be like perfect, and it took me very many attempts (and I did use the C buttons to adjust the camera in the process).

Hold on, good idea for the tower star: you can jump on King Thwomp and stand on top of him. When he jumps to smash you again, jump off and grab the star.

He couldn't find a program that allowed for a motion control input
Might I suggest talking with pannenkoek for most of the stars you can't get? Even if he can't find a way to unlock the Wing and Vanish caps, or do anything gated with ground pounds, he can at least find alternate methods to get the stars. He's also shown off a means to clone enemies into different stages, particularly placing goombas in BitS from Bob-omb Battlefield, during his attempts to shave off A presses; this can be used to get some of the missing 100 coin stars.
Also, you can challenge SimpleFlips to get the 8 red coin stars in SSL and WMotR without the wing cap or use of the Z button. I'm sure he can figure out how to do at least one of those.

I distinctly remember using the cannon to get the Caged Island star when I first got the star a long time ago, because I thought that was the only way to get it (I also remember uncovering the "Blast Away the Wall" star by pure accident while trying to get this star). It wasn't until a second run not long afterward that I uncovered the owl in the tree simply because I was curious if there was another 1-Up in the tree. Imagine my surprise when I found out that this was the way you were supposed to get the star and the cannon was simply the hard way to do it. XD
If u play on emulator u can pause the game and change controls. E.g.: map a button at the chain chomp to Z and then back!

If you could map button _combos_ then this would be so much more possible and getting all 120 stars would be easy. For example:
CTRL stick = Move
C + CTRL stick = Camera controls (up = look, left/right = turn, down = zoom out)
Z + CTRL stick (up) = jump
Z + CTRL stick (left/right) = punch
Z + CTRL stick (down) = crouch
This was really neat!

Yeah the Nunchuck Is capable of motion controls so you map A to C, you keep Z on Z and you map B to shake and presto you have everything necessary to beat the game in 1 hand.

Collect the Caps, Quick Race through Downtown, and the DDD 100 coin star can potentially be obtained by taking something through the loading zone. You go back and forth through the loading zone until you get the star you want or a coin.
The nunchuk has sensors inside. You can shake em. It’ll make mario punch.
Remap the small circle button with jump or crouch. Same with the Z button.
That way, you can ground pound when you shake the nunchuck and press one of the buttons for crouch/crawl.

Try playing Super Mario 64 but with either a D-Pad, DK Bongos or Keyboard
D-pad would be fine (provided you didn't mean JUST a d-pad).

NES controller was the initial idea for this video but I figured I'd change it to the nunchuk ! They're basically the same challenge, having only 2 buttons (as long as I wouldn't use SELECT)

For forever I didnt know you could ground pound boos or bullies, and the pain I felt was immense
im pretty sure the controll stick of the nunchuk is clickable like many other nintendo controllers, so if you somehow manage to make that an input, you can actually groundpound and get most of the stars that you chouldn't!

For the record, the “impossible” stars in DDD and WDW can be done by carrying a shell/Chuckya to the loading zone connecting the two halves of each stage to clone the stars or clone coins. Doing so for WDW is ridiculously hard, but not impossible, and DDD is relatively simple.
Now all we need is NB's is IT possible to beat sm64 with only feet

That dive technique, since you can't long jump, was pretty good. It's a major pain to play with touch controls and using Z can be a nightmare if touch control layout isn't fully user placable. I couldn't imagine using just nunchucks and full out restricting controls with out having the hope of utilizing _"finger gymnastics"_ when needed.
Thing about Whomp's Fortress:
What you could do to be able to get the star on the tower without killing the Whomp is to get one if the stars that cone after it (i.e. the star you wall jump to) and when you go back into the stage, you select that star.
What will happen is that it will load that state of the level (which is waaay after you kill the Whomp), so you'd be able to get the one on the tower no problem.
Unfortunately it doesn't work like that haha

in my DSi when i played Super Mario 64 DS i didn't use a ground pound so much because the R button wasn't very much working
so i changed into new super mario bros DS and it became my childhood
(i'm just 12 years old so i'm still in my childhood)

just use cloning to get most of the unobtainable stars in Dire Dire Docks. grab the shell and swim through the middle point until you get the unreachable stars/ coin spawners

I’m quite surprised at the results because before you really think about it, you would think that having just the main A and B buttons wouldn’t impede you too much. Would be interesting to see different results of mapping in different button combinations, such as AB, AZ, and BZ, which would be the main ones.

Nathaniel bandy did a video where he did the BLJ with random and stupid controllers, and it proved you only need 3 buttons to do a BLJ, so BLJ's are possible with just a nunchuk
A challenge that was completely, legitimately possible! No BLJ's, no psuedo ground touches, just getting all the way through, even with a few extra stars!
