  • Welcome to The Beam House, the first project by Tano Studio. Located in Calgary, AB, Tano Studio executed a full renovation of this former 1950’s showhome to create a modern family bungalow with 4 bedrooms and 3 and a half bathrooms. Rather than being constrained by the original architecture, they completely reimagined both the interior and exterior of the property, selectively retaining permanent fixtures while removing elements to enhance height, square footage, and spacial flow. Alex and Eric, the founders of Tano Studio, started this project with their own family in mind while also envisioning the needs of families of all sizes for generations to come. The result is a contemporary yet inviting home that seamlessly blends warmth, innovation, and functionality.

The dark wood you saw in Norway was probably not Shou Sugi Ban, or more correctly, Yakisugi, but rather a coating made from a complicated development of pine tar which must be reapplied every 3-5 years, as far as is known. The contemporary methods of creating the concoction have only been around for about 30 years, so it is not known if it eventually lasts for much longer. The Yakisugi process, for which there are no criteria for thickness of char is attempted by many DIYers and even professionals with varying ranges of effectiveness. It appears in older Japanese structures that the char is about 1/4" thick, while many treatments in the USA leave much-uncharred wood visible in the finished product. A product called Woodguard ia used to mimic the Yakisugi by some professionals.

Every time someone says sho sugi ban, a japanese fairy loses its wings. Its yakisugi. Sho sugi ban is an incorrect pronunciation of the kangi that is trademarked by a western company

Few simple changes? They took the entire roof off the house and restructured it!.
