That seating area in front was awkward with the rocks and the fence in front of it, but the rest of the house seems like it will suit them.

@@CuriousCat0347 it’s the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen I just can I get with these modern designs.. I would take the old look and make minor upgrades. Also, she completely erased her grandparents from existence. there is not one piece of their history left in that house.

My grandparents(maternal) had a ranch, brick, back in 1950s. Not a fixer-upper. But, had an in-ground pool, next to the cemetary, not spooky! Great six years!

I like the paint outside. Usually I prefere when it's not touched, for some houses it really make a difference so in this case I prefere the paint. It did justice to the architecture. I love the kitchen but the u.s folks really likes big kitchens, I don't think I would like that much space just for a kitchen but I like the design a lot. Am happy it's not white cabinet🙄 and am for no upper cabinet too, no one need 10 cabinet in a kitchen. Downsize people! it's better. The yard is so beautiful its look like the gardens here in European houses. That fire Place is itself a piece of art compared to what it was. Love what they did. ❤

I think the slat wall is giving (upscale) MCM styling but otherwise I'm not sure what is Midcentury Modern about this. I think they mentioned a MCM color palette but it's more so a modern farmhouse color palette than anything else.
That's not to say that it isn't nice. They seem to love it and that's important. People have different interpretations of what certain styles are.
Agreed, there is nothing MCM about the interiors or exteriors. They already had MCM elements in the original house, particularly the formica counter. They just had to maybe redo the cabinets and repaint the walls to a more unique color. The palette is really blah for MCM. The open plan kitchen/living room combo and shelving also screams modern, the wooden slats wall with black brick feel Japandi style as does the outside patio.
Agree. It's not MCM at all. Paiting the brick white on the outside pushes it even further away from MCM or a FLW home.
I keep saying i don't like modern but damn did i like this remo! Phenomenal! So perhaps "mid-century" is the key to this traditional homes fan! Loved it!
The only thing I would add in all Southern homes is an enclosed screen porch with some rotating ceiling fans. Because that heat and humidity in the South is a real thing and makes sitting outdoors less enjoyable. Even though we did it growing it. LOL

Everything looks great. But, where is the storage in the kitchen? I like a couple of uppers for dishes and other small items that would be hard to access in lower cabinets. Lower cabinets can be dark and hard to see inside.
My thoughts exactly! I couldn't live without upper cabinets. There are things you need to get to quickly that you don't want displayed on open shelves. I only store items I don't use as often in my lower cabinets. The lowers are deeper and I don't like rummaging around in there looking for something that has been pushed to the back.
Lowers can be good if they're drawers or they pull out. I agree that a traditional lower cabinet is a pain, but if they use drawers you don't have to lower yourself and lower cabinets are so much larger than uppers.
I'm also short, so 2/3rds of my upper cabinets are impossible for me to reach without a stool lol, so they're may be a bias there

Really nice reno. the only thing I don’t like is the black fireplace. And the wood paneling wall is just weird. I do like the fact they put a door to the garage tho. i bet they never use that sitting area out the front

Why would anyone paint brick? It’s probably the worst thing that you can do to a mid century home. Let’s see this in a year or so when all that paint starts to chip
As well as it destroying the brick. Brick needs to breath. What once would have lasted more than another 100yrs will will start to crumble. As you said, it went from no maintenance to a pain in a year or two. 😞
@@crystalrabbon I live in a mid century home myself with a wall to wall brick fireplace, and would never touch it. A lot of the homes in my neighborhood are mid century, and seen people paint them white. Do board & batten instead or something that it can last for a long time. I thing people watch too much HGTV than George Nelson or Frank Lloyd Wright’s work.
@@Petitvoyage81 I agree! It's blasphemy and an abomination. LOL I thank God they never painted the brick outside! Our was built 1957. We have dual fireplaces and, thankfully, they only painted the brick on one side. My goal is to remove all the paint and maybe wainscot a little bit. I do the construction on my own, so I'm still thinking through how I want it done. :)
@@Petitvoyage81 Amen! Don't say you're doing mid century modern if you haven't studied the work of the greats in that genre. Most of the HGTV renovators don't have a clue what authentic mid century modern design elements are. I would be embarrassed to announce that this is Mid Century Modern style. Nelson and Wright are rolling over in their graves.
@@crystalrabbon Good luck with the Reno! Same here with my husband. Doing the work ourselves, preserving as much as possible. The only modern approach is the electrical, and some small touches.

Looks stunning! Not sure I'd like or get used to the sink and fridge being so spread out and far removed from the actual cooking zone. I don't strictly adhere to the "work triangle" rules, and when you're doing a total gut and makeover you make do with what you have but ... not the easiest kitchen to cook in. Still, they seem really pleased, and that's what counts most. It's a huge improvement!

The new seating area off the front porch looks uncomfortable with those stones for flooring. How do you scoot your chair around? Your sandaled feet will be uncomfortable on that lumpy hard surface. How bout concrete?

Fun fact! Not all American homes built in the middle of the last century are mid-century modern homes, and not all homes decorated with West Elm furniture are mid century homes!
Was a mid century ranch btw. But after is NOT MId Ventury Modern. Nothing is MCM. It is now a Modern Farmhouse. Wish i could have that original cooktop with the grill. Had one in our 1960 MCM home and loved it.

Dont paint bricks they need to breath
That brick was in fantastic shape and was a pretty brick. No discoloration at all. It makes me sick they painted over it. They went from an exterior with no maintenance to a boring, flat color that will need maintenance from now on. The red brick had so much more character.
What time was it an interior designer at this time, I would never use white subway tiles! Everybody is using it. Can’t we be more creative than that?

I don't like the enclosed courtyard. It looks awkward. The kitchen cabinets are also blah. The backyard is fantastic though
I hate to see reusable materials wrecked and destroyed. There are those hwo would love kitchen cupboards or a working fridge.
I know it is just a matter of preference, but I never understand why anyone would want to paint beautiful brick. Brick is so low-maintenance and natural - but once painted, it will have to be painted every so many years. If I bought a painted brick home, I'd find out how much it would cost to sand-blast the paint off LOL. Nice house, though.
Umm...the updates look good, but I fail to see what is MCM about this home. I own an MCM home and this is not MCM. It's nice but not MCM.

Why, when something is like 100 years old piece of furniture, and you want to take a piece off to update it, you destroy the piece you take off. Most of the time it’s very decorative piece. Then good cabinets you destroy instead of recycle. There are less rich people then you who would buy those cabinets ......
The front hideaway is too small but a cool idea... And they do this " secret door" thing ad nauseam...

I despise how people misinterpret the term MCM. This is far from it. Cute house, but the elements of MCM are just not there. If anything, it's just a modern version of farm house

Yes just completely destroy those solid wood cabinets! Don’t sell them or donate them to habitat for humanity or anything. You can’t find quality made cabinets like that anymore. Hell they would’ve been great to at least use in the garage.
Right? Damn near gave me a heart attack. My ranch home has the original cabinets and I would never even think of touching them
@@saltedslug our old house was a ranch over a crawl space and very cheaply built. We remodeled everything and actually had to put a header board back in from a horrible remodel the previous owner had done. We had to remove the old cabinets because they had an in-cabinet oven and separate range top. We wanted a combo unit because the oven was pretty small. I wanted to reuse the cabinets but didn’t have enough of them to fill the kitchen with the remodel. When we looked for new cabinets, everything that was “affordable” was absolutely trash quality. But the house was a cheap house in a declining neighborhood so we had to get out of there. Hell, those original cabinets were the best quality item in that house when it was built. I hung a couple of them for use in the laundry room, used a few more in the garage and donated the rest. So I hope someone got good use from them. Those old cabinets are so easy to refurbish with new stain/paint and hardware and they still will turn out better than anything new.

There's nothing mid century modern about this renovation. The house was built in the 60's, that's about the only thing. This house renovation doesn't resemble Palm Springs AT ALL.😖
I usually like what they do but this time I really preferred the house before. It lost its soul.

Lot of great changes, but if I were a buyer and walked into a house where the first thing I see is a refridgerator, I'd turn around and walk out. Don't understand this "open concept" stuff - why do people want houses where their dirty dishes are on display in the living room?
