How an Interior Designer Transformed a Rental Into a Unique Mid-Century English Home
Returning to Calgary from a life in Toronto and unsure which neighbourhood they'd like to settle in, Laura Collins and her family embraced the opportunity to transform a rental property into a vibrant and functional living space.
The design vision centered on creating a playful and interesting atmosphere, blending the inherent elements of mid-century modern with the cozy elements of an English cottage. Laura used bold colour to marry the two styles.
Short of demoing walls and an expensive renovation, the transformation extends to every corner of the home. Paint, custom upholstered cushions on built-in benches, bespoke lampshades, and carefully selected trims and finishes contribute to a reinvented space without breaking the bank.

Sustainable Living in a Multi-Generational Passive House
what is the name of the kitchen counter on the backsplash and around the gas cooktop? Slate? Quartz? Natural stone? It is a great look for this home.
So good! These videos are the best!!!
Lucky you can do this on a rental in your country. In the UK , it is not allowed, bar perhaps paint or adhesive wallpaper.
I don't think this is common. However, is a professional designer and she presented the landlord with her vision. Obviously the landlord agreed with her wonderful plan.
Forever Alone!
Not something I could ever have imagined would work - icecream colours, cottagey layers, and mid-century lines - but it works so, so well. A ovely space for a young family.
Wow such a cool space and captured perfectly!! The mixing of styles is so good
Happy Belated Birthday. 🖤
Really nice….sweet
The luck to find a home like this is mind blowing...A dream come true.
🤔 P r o m o S M
That view!!! 😳
The art deco sconces in the bathroom are an unexpected and lovely touch!
Wow!
How can I get your contact Jonny and Megan? Need your expertise on Vancouver Island
Way too many textures and materials...kitschy!
WOW! as an architect and builder, I have one word to describe that home, BORING! It lacks creativity no sense of imagination and with that color palette it makes me want to throw up . The person in the video uses big words to try and impress others and only comes across as a complete idiot. Three colors I never use and I don’t consider them colors are white, black and gray.
Beautiful. Amazing natural light and the lot is so peaceful. I love the real life stages that most of us have to roll with. Someday there will be cabinets in my laundry room. 😆
Every design is special for the people who build it,yet it is a different kind of home, coming out of a barn design, the double building is a great idea for everybody’s privacy ,use of space and economy thinking ,love the whole place, many happy future memories for the young couple !
Awesome story and home, Jonny. Well done guys, and Suvi. Love from us.
From the outside, in my own personal opinion, it looks flat, stark, box-like, and bleak. I would be depressed living there.
A good house is never really "done". I love this one! Regards from Indiana!
I’d love to know what style home this is. It’s different than just a farmhouse style. Anyone know specifically?
Very Scandanavian modern.
Really cool, really)
i love this account so much please never stop posting
Wonder how that massive sliding glass door in the studio holds up during those harsh Albertan winters 😅 seems non-trivial to weather-proof
Not sure if its been asked or not but how much square footage did this turn out to be? Thank you!
Beautiful house and love the way it was filmed!
Beautiful design!! I love the outdoor space between the offices. ❤
This is what TRUE DESIGN is: You don't pay attention to any "design strategies" shouting at you here and there. You just simply enjoy the space and the landscape surround you.
❤️❤️❤️❤️
It's a simply beautiful house.
The house is livable (!). Everything about this project is so simple, yet beautiful.
One of the best houses i have seen in a while and what a location
What state is this located in
Alberta, Canada
Really banal modern architecture. No character.
That’s a little rough
Beautiful home, congratulations :)
Looks very European.
A dream farmhouse.😍
Beautiful home, really, really, really, really, irritating background music until 5:23 🤦♂️
What type of wood have you used on the outside?
Straight up hideous house.
That’s a little rough
This is stunning. i thought it was in NZ due to the landscape. Very inspirational!
It's funny to see how people see this design as "special", while every other home in north of Europe looks exactly like that (nothing wrong with that either way, just saying). In Poland we call this style "Modern Barn", and super popular recently, I'm building a similar one, though with Black wood.
geez, plant some trees out there already
i love the house I live in ( thats my mum and step dad)
That’s crazy cheap
Super house, super people 😀
I love this house sooooo much, well done! Is the architect available for contact?
Hello, please reach out on our website and we can put you in contact with the architect.
Beautiful home and location
Really Loving This From The Caribbean 🇻🇨🙌
