    I camped in Mesa Verde two nights during late September 1994. I hiked all of the Anasazi ruins, fabulous sites, so interesting. These ancient ones certainly knew how to build structures that would last. Love the place.

    That actually looks like a good time to go. The snow was beautiful and you got to see the ruins without people. I went in September and it was so hot.

      Sure, you get to see the ruins but you can't go to any of them. Pros and cons. Thanks for watching!

      I was going to say this, I've been to MV a few times and its pretty impossible to get the shot of Cliff Palace that Tristan got at 5:58, a scan of the full facade with no people in the shot, under normal conditions. There's a constant flow of tours going through when its not winter. So you can't get up close and personal with the ruins, but you can get some photographs you can't get normally (and getting up close and personal with the ruins also means being in a giant tour group of people, so definite pros and cons)

    I visited Mesa Verde in 2013. Driving in, point lookout seemed to dominate the views. The guided tours each have a separate charge ($3 back then) in addition to the park's entrance fee. I took the tour of Cliff Palace, since it's pretty much the most famous part of the park. Getting out requires climbing up three ladders. The Far View area, if I remember the info correctly, was built before the cliff dwellings. The natives lived on the mesas, but later descended into the canyons and built in the alcoves of the cliffs to get away from enemies. I saw Square Tower House when it was under restoration and had all that scaffolding around it. Thanks for showing it in its restored glory.

    Was there in October in the early 90’s. Wonderful experience with everything accessible. It was crowded however. There is something great about visiting in the winter like you did. You can be more contemplative. After all, it does have a sacredness that is wonderful to experience.

    I used to go there as part of a fire crew every spring. We were doing a massive shaded fuel break around all the structures in that park. When they later had massive wildfires that ran through the park the fire dropped to the ground and protected the buildings and homes. Mesa Verde is always a cool place to go. thanks for sharing.

    Looked very pretty. On my list. Passed it many times. Did you know that north out of Cortez is a place called Hovenweep? You would be able to camp on blm outside of the park. Inside is a very nice camp area and visitor center next to the ancient ruins in a small canyon. It's about 20 some odd miles in the middle of farm land and faces Sleeping Ute Mountain. Lots of hiking. Great place to video I think.

    I visited the Cliff Dwellings near Silver City NM on New Years Day 2000. It was in the 30's outside with 6" of snow on ground on way in. We were the first footprints in the snow after the ranger made morning rounds. Up in the cliff dwellings it was 20 degrees hotter at mid-day with the winter sun shining on the rock face (that's one of the reasons why they built dwellings there - warmth in winter). Perfect for a picnic. We were the only visitors there and hung out for hours. There are perks to going off season in certain parks.

    When we visited in 2017, the Cliff Palace was close for restoration work so we took the Long House tour as an alternative. While not as well-preserved/restored as Cliff Palace, Long House is roughly comparable in size and the ruins are spectacularly impressive nonetheless. And the hike in and out is quite scenic as a bonus. Definitely recommend that if you have the opportunity.

    My first visit was the first week of April after a weather report that there would be 2-3 inches of snow in Moab, 2-3 feet of snow in Bryce Canyon, where I was initially heading. So I went South, hit 6-8 inches going over mtns to Cortez. I hit a squally climbing to the tunnel going into Mesa Verde, went through the tunnel and the sun was out an beautiful, but 45 degrees. Got to remember you
    at 7500 feet.

    I had an interesting view looking DOWN at the 4th of July fireworks over Cortez, CO from Mesa Verde NP a few years ago. At 6 miles distant, the colorful fireworks appeared small and the muffled "boom" arrived about 35 seconds after the explosion. But what a beautiful vantage point. There is so much to see and do in the 'four corners' area.

    Most enjoyable - thank you. I’ve seen Mesa Verdi in tourist high season, with too many other people!
    Great to see it in winter and to see just how much snow fall there is, which helps to explain how the Native Americans prospered in this (comparatively recent) arid climate.The snow is so much more effective than equivalent rainfall in recharging shallow aquifers, which then feed more or less year-round springs. I have been to cliff dwellings before in the 1960s mostly prior to their being micro-managed by Parks & Recreation. So, there were very few restrictions by management in those days and you could get right in there to look around. Also, in those days there were no museums, walkways or campgrounds and very few tourists even during the busiest season. I was mostly impressed by their size which you just can't appreciate from afar. After some exploration and study, I realized that life might have been quite secure and comfortable living like that...

    We are headed to this park in January. All Mesa Verde videos are mostly from summer and fall; so this video was highly relevant to our upcoming trip. You have given us a clear idea of what to expect. Honestly, I will take the solitude over anything else. The point Lookout hike looks very interesting and likely something we will do. A question if you don't mind: Where were you camped? You mentioned a BLM site that seemed close by the park. Thanks!

    You should maybe note the altitude as a guide go high in the Summer, low in the winter, same for latitude. Cliff Palace is the largest site.

    You may not be seeing comments on a video this old, but just in case: I am wondering if you've been to the Rattlesnake Canyon Arches trail in the Black Ridge Wilderness west of Grand Junction? It is a little bit north of Mesa Verde, but very well worth it if you're ever in the area.

    The website on nps.gov and their tour-schedule easily indicades that there is not much access until spring (at least). There are parts of the park that are totally closed until may. Anyway. You took some great shots without people. I always wondered how the park looks in winter and how it is when there are no tourists around. Thanks for this clip.

      Balcony House is not as difficult as it first appears. My dad and I did it when he was 70 and he had no issues. Also Cliff Palace is not too bad even though the ladder at the exit looked intimidating. I found that early June and mid-September were great times to visit; nice weather and small crowds. Been there at least 6 times and would gladly go back!

    • @SUVRVing
      @SUVRVing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I specifically say it's because most of the park is closed in winter. Has nothing to do with the temperature. I live in Idaho. Gets way colder than Cortez.

    The hike up the mountain was strangely exotic to me somehow! How do you feel about the amount of daylight for winter trips? Is it ok or does it feel like wasting a lot of time between sunset and bedtime?

    • @SUVRVing
      @SUVRVing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's definitely a lot of down time, but I wouldn't necessarily call it wasted. As long as you have something to do (books, audiobooks, videos, etc.), it's not bad.
