    I worked on the Death Valley trail crew in the 1980s and those barns in the distance in the beginning were where they kept the work horses that carried supplies up to the various trail crews. Tell you a true story, but don't tell anybody because I don't want people to get in trouble. There was a Percheron work horse named Bill that we all loved, he was a character. But Bill got too old to do the work and the Park Service policy at the time was to put the horse out in the pasture near those barns and basically let them expire naturally. Well our supervisor had a ranch in Wyoming and he didn't like the idea of Bill dying out in the field by himself, so one day in the fall as everything was winding down he brought his trailer to the field, loaded Bill up, and took him to his ranch to let Bill live out his life in the company of people. We knew he would treat him well. Keep in mind Bill was a U.S. Park Service horse and as such was U.S. Government property. Everyone knew my supervisor did it and looked the other way and we figured it was best for old Bill. But you never know, this could be a fictional story. so don't ask me for any more details.

    I'm the same way. I will spend entire summer out west sleeping in my truck and never light a single fire. Hate smoke smelling clothing. Sleeping in the truck is a way to travel, fish, hike, bike and stargaze. It's cheap, convenient, on location, germ free and above all people free.

      The no people thing is huge, it is getting harder every year to get away from other people. Sleeping in your truck is so free feeling.

    I’m impressed! For someone who’s never been on XC skis you were beginning to get a little bit of a glide by the end of your trip. There are some great youtube vids to learn to XC. Trust me, it’s worth it to learn to fly over the snow. Or, take a lesson or two. As athletic as you are, being able to throw your weight forward and increase your glide will increase your enjoyment of skiing by at least 500%.

    I feel better knowing that someone else likes the road trip part but not the camping part. Now I don't have to feel like I'm 'cheating' when I take off in my car.
    The animal sites were amazing!!! As beautiful as the landscape looks, it would probably be too cold for my liking. So, thanks for sharing the view!

    Yes! We "camp" in a similar style. It was quite liberating to hear you say you don't like campfires. My husband and I agreed that we were making campfires just out of tradition. We ran out of room, so we swapped out our big comfortable chairs for minimal chairs and have not regretted it. Funny how we do things out of habit. Thanks for all your inspiration!

    Glad to know Skinny Skis is still in business. We rented skis around 1990 and did a little trip in the Tetons. Later we snowmobiled in Yellowstone on a very cold day in late December. Boy was that ride cold until be got to the first warming hut. Thanks for reminding me of those days and one of my favorite areas in the world. The summer backpacking trips were also great.

    Beautiful fox! And that Raven was a beauty also! Both very clever creatures and can be quick to befriend a human for food 😅 If you feed a Raven from the same spot for a while, it will begin leaving you gifts in return. I really love Ravens ❤😊
    Stunning vistas and artwork! Thank you!

    Stunning beauty. What a great trip to make. That black bird is a raven; much bigger than crows and, like them, very intelligent birds. I've seen them wait for people to turn their backs on food and then swoop down and take off with it. He was checking our your situation for a food opportunity.

    Gorgeous winter views of the Tetons and Jackson! The fox must've heard tacos were for supper. Lot of familiar locations you captured like the museum. Spent Christmas in Jackson a few years ago and it was a holiday to remember. Been there in both seasons and it is always amazing. Thanks for the virtual tour.

    Wow Tristan! I thought the Tetons were impressive in summer.... but winter is just so dang amazing! And $21 bucks for a day of cross country skiing is pretty darn good in my opinion. Thanks for the tour! And the fox? that guy was so beautiful... and brazen... haha... looking for that extra treat! Great video as usual! GREAT VID, Tristan....and you cracked me up.....” this BIG bird”.....is a raven, one of my favorite birds. They are very smart, and some native American tribes think they are powerful spirits. I love “walking” along, on x-country skis, in the mountains...you looked pretty good, nice, smooth stride on the way back

    Oh. My. Gosh! The fox! He was SO beautiful. I appreciate your wise decision to eat differently and NOT to feed the fox knowing going into visitor areas are what gets them killed...then seeing the sign on the way out is proof you did the right thing. I’m with you on the not liking typical camping things. We have a vintage 13’ trailer we will have solar and it’s got a two burner stove. We don’t do campfires and we don’t cook over an open fire. We like sleeping in our bed and reading and hiking. NOT the places YOU hike, but camping in a parking lot is something we would totally do. So enjoy the music and the museum! Thanks for taking us along! Interested to hear more about your new camping set up!

    Hey now, watch that talk about Michiganders, lol. My first cross country skiing was in Northern Lower Peninsula, MI. My "friends" were experienced and switched signs so that what I thought was a 2 mile trail was 5. And we're talking through lots of trees and hills. Fortunately for me, there were a group of wonderful young men who took pity on me (well, being 20 years old didn't hurt, ha), shared a thermos of moguls and helped me back. What a beautiful trail! I've only been up that way in Summer and Early Fall. Lovely.

  • @lawsonone6015
    @lawsonone6015 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Wow! What a nice trip! Thank you for having me along!
    Favorites: the vastness of quiet whiteness around you as you cross-country skied,
    The animal sightings: what a beautiful fox and huge raven,
    The view of the Tetons almost seemed unreal they were so perfect.
    I’ve never camped but feel like I’d be the same when it comes to food and prep on a trip; possibly even less inclined to put much prep in. I plan to try it this spring locally (southern Nevada) and want to bring “pocket food” like mixed nuts, fruit, and pemican as food. Wonder if I’m being realistic. There’s only one way to find out. :)

    • @SUVRVing
      @SUVRVing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep, your pocket food idea is a workable option. Not sure if I'd be into pemmican, but any kind of snack food works just fine.

    Yessss...been waiting for a Tetons episode! What a stunningly spectacular area, even more so covered in snow on a sunny day. Excellent video beginning to end packed with tons of detail! Scenery, wildlife, gear, chatting, skiing...loved it all! It's funny, I'm too lazy for cross country skiing but am more than happy to set up camp, build a campfire, and cook a nice dinner. Your kind of lazy is probably healthier than my kind of lazy, LOL. I'm really looking forward to hearing more about the fridge. I seriously considered that one (no way I was going to spend $800+ on one of the big names) but lacking a dual power setup for the moment and not wanting to dive into that expense as well, I decided to just try out a better cooler for this year. But I'm very very curious about that little fridge. I really like the size of it compared to most vehicle fridges I see people carting around. Awesome work as always!

That's what fascinates me about it. For me, camping has something to do with getting by with very little. Everyone comes to it from a different perspective. Good video.

    Hahahahaha... HEY! I'm from Michigan, what's it to ya! Really just want to say thanks. Came across your stream a couple weeks ago and have to tell ya, love every minute of it. Tetons are my favorite place too. Am at a point now in my life where if I want to do anymore adventuring I'll have to do it thru others vicariously. Evidently we have a lot in common when it comes to appreciating mother earth. From what I've seen you continue to point out, visit or have experienced almost all the types of things and places I've cherished in my time. Having had several opportunities to travel and explore, every time have ventured out always am drawn to the northwest, USA. Have visited most all of the US and Canada, but have made the time to include a visit there. Tetons and Yellowstone x8 and all other places, e.g., Crater Lake at least x1. Like you visited an area near Dubois, WY and I was kind of taken aback when your shared your enjoyment of that, otherwise never before noted, specific area. In my early days my claim to fame was my avid interests in Rock Climbing and Mountaineering... Had at one point laid out a succession of progressive climbs starting out with L:ongs Peak in CO and Devils Tower in WY, to El Cap and Half Dome in Yosemite, and many more in between. But that was before devotion to family and career took over. Had to set them aside for "later in life", but that time is now and unfortunately God had other plans for me and was crippled in an accident. BUT, But, but now thru the creation of technology am able to follow you and your trek around my famous places and enjoy, thru you, what would've been. So Thank You. (Had visited Tetons in every season, but Winter and was one of those, "plans" had set aside and cross-country skiing was something had just started to enjoy, too - double thank you!)

      I agree, it would be, but I don't think they're allowed on it. They are in Teton Canyon on the west side of the range, though.

    Nice video...so beautiful, impressive herd of elk, and I thought I saw a lot of elk when I was in Oregon. I'll have to make a point of passing through there when i go back west...evidently the fox was hoping you didn't see the "please don't feed the fox sign" :) and I really liked the picture of the owl at that museum)))

    I'm eating tacos as I type this!! LOL. Tetons are beautiful, snow-covered!! I'm like you, I taught myself how to cross-country ski, YEARS ago, when I was MUCH younger!! You did well!! Thanks for the continued inspiration to head west in my van and visit all these beautiful places. Saw YNP in October so that one is crossed off my list!! Btw, I'm from Ohio.

    Your reminding me how much I enjoyed winters in northern Ontario, Canada where I skied (x country) across lakes in temperatures of -30 with the wind chill. But under blue blue sky... It's the best.
    Just not the same here (mind you,very beautiful) in British Columbia.
    Thx for your great videos!

    Love the Tetons. I camped at Colter Bay last June, there was a fox family (with pups!) that had dug out a den underneath the laundry/showers building. Beautiful creatures.

    Breathtaking!. Appears the animals there have a good hotline for when dinner's cooking. I use a small immersion heater to get my water for my oatmeal and dehydrated soups. then I don't have to use up any fuel. Or Step outside if I don't want to. I really love this video. And I like your simpler adapted style of being in nature. To suit your enjoyment

    I was just in Yellowstone and the Tetons back in late August and early September. On a side trip I visited Mesa Falls in nearby Idaho and had a fox do exactly the same thing in the parking lot. I was told by the rangers that people are feeding them causing them to lose their fear of humans. I remember seeing the museum but unfortunately didn't stop.

    Awesome videos. Thanks for the inspiration and ideas of where to visit once the current situation blows over.
    I enjoy both car and "regular" camping. I'll mainly do the tent and fire stuff with my kid. But yeah, that smokey smell can get annoying. I dried my shoes over a campfire last December in Yosemite. They still have the smell. 😁
