@@kzh5443 So how about when batters have to go for quick runs in limited time to win a Test before game ends...your point cuts both ways. Jomboy covered a ripper in NZ not long ago.
Legend has it that during a particularly hot match in the earlier days of cricket they left the bails on the stumps over lunch. They came back out to play and the first ball after the break the ball hit middle stump half way up. However the hot sun caused the varnish on the bails to melt and stick to the stumps, which meant that the bails did not fall off therefore it was not an out. Ever since umpires have continued the tradition of removing the bails after each session of play.

hey I just discovered your channel during the MLB post season, love your breakdowns and player reactions. As a kiwi, and a diehard cricket fan, was super stoked to see this on your channel
Usually the full toss isn’t a strategy, it’s just a mistake, but it’s possible that given it was coming up the end of the day’s play, Ravindra was trying to induce a wicket from a batter error (they’ve been playing all day and are tired and more likely make a mistake) - a full toss is usually regarded as a ball you need to score runs off so you have to play a shot
He was probably just trying to give the ball some air and ended up giving it too much... As Warnie used to do all the time, sometimes you just need to throw it up to induce a false stroke. Problem is, you can easily overpitch it...
Question. Why , if you're allowed to bowl the ball in the air without bouncing it, is it not a strategy to throw full speed 100 mph baseball pitches at the wicket Explain it like I'm 5, I have very little cricket knowledge myself.
Full tosses have to get to the batter below waist height - otherwise, it's a no ball (1 run is scored, and the ball must be re taken). The dynamics of batting in cricket make it a pretty easy pitch to hit as its trajectory is linear and you don't have to account for the bounce of the ball.
@ as another said, a pace bowler can’t bowl a full toss above waist height. The bowling you were seeing is spin bowling which ranges in the 75-90 kmph range (don’t ask me for miles). Fast bowling is more like 130-150kph (slower than the fastest baseball pitches). The reason with spin bowling that you can easily full toss it is because you often try to loft the ball a bit. So it actually goes up a bit out of the hand and then it comes down. If you losing control of the ball as you bowl it whilst trying to spin it it can easily come out too high and not bounce. Pace bowlers sometimes lose control of the ball out of hand and it doesn’t bounce and comes out high enough that it hits the batsman. That’s can be intimidatory but it not often a deliberate tactic. There is a great ball pace bowlers can bowl called a Yorker which is essentially aimed at the stumps so it either is mean to hit it direct or hit the very base of the stumps and the ground. But it’s hard to bowl and it certainly can’t be used all the time. Look up “best inswinging Yorker” for some great highlights. But it’s hard to get right and the margins for getting it right are very small. Other thing is that if you get the ball too high - even at pace it can be easy to flick off the pads or hit horizontally (like a baseball swing) for runs. Remember in cricket that you don’t have to run, so if you hit it on the ground there is no real disadvantage to the batsman. Ground balls are not at all dangerous in cricket whereas in baseball grounders that don’t pass the infield can be a real problem. These are all different things that mean that full tosses are not really ever a weapon in cricket.
@@shaneturner1809 bowling (pitching) the ball has to be done with a straight arm - 100mph is basically the upper limit, and only a handful can bowl it that fast Also, any good batting is scoring off a full toss like that regardless of the speed, as it has to be below waist height and can't bounce unpredictably

Ground balls are not at all dangerous in cricket whereas in baseball grounders that don’t pass the infield can be a real problem.
These are all different things that mean that full tosses are not really ever a weapon in cricket.
@@shaneturner1809 bowling (pitching) the ball has to be done with a straight arm - 100mph is basically the upper limit, and only a handful can bowl it that fast
Also, any good batting is scoring off a full toss like that regardless of the speed, as it has to be below waist height and can't bounce unpredictably
0:48 That's Ashwin and not Hardik . ☺️
Plus NZ had one on India Soil in decades, plus India hadn't lost 3-0 in decades, Plus NZ came into this getting embarrassed by Sri Lanka. Just a weird, wild Test Series that everything went right for NZ. Finally they're not the fools in a Cricket Breakdown!!!
Not in decades, India has never lost 3-0 in Indian soil ever.
NZ hadn’t won a test in India since 1988 and India had never lost 3-0 in a series ever
As a fan of test cricket and baseball this is a great video to watch. Keep them coming jomboy. India is touring Australia later this month. Should be a great spectacle
Love your cricket coverage Jomboy! Nice to see NZ on the good side of the breakdown for once. Greatest achievement in the history of NZ cricket. Absolutely unlikely based on current form and history and NZ missing top players through injury. A Trillion to 1 shot at least.
Greatest achievement in the history of cricket. All of it. Not just NZ's.
Refreshing to hear an American voice commentate and actually have knowledge about the game and even your breakdown is spot on with tactics and thought in the game.
Head and shoulders above all the reaction videos, which are nice but are common.
Your take is a refreshing dose of charm
Good one Jimmy, need more of these.
Hope you'll cover more cricket!
Still not nearly as bad as the Yankees disastrous 5th inning against the Dodgers
naw it was about as bad
That was pretty disastrous lol. Nightmare unfolding in real time
Disagree. This is worse. This would be lime if the Yankees lost the World Series to the White Sox. I know that's impossible due to the AL/NL system but that's the closest analogy
@@albertmotbey1128common man white Sox are worse than NZ rn
@@albertmotbey1128 naw dude the white sox are afghanistan or even a minnow team like the Nepal or the US. I realize minnow cricket teams dont play test cricket, but thats closer to them losing to the white sox
Great stuff Jimmy, hope to hear you doing some analysis on the upcoming Australia vs India Tests!
Only minimally understood cricket before your breakdowns, now I anxiously await each one, keep it up!
As a brit I love both baseball and cricket. Keep the cricket breakdowns coming Jomboy.
I enjoy these. I hope he enjoys making them. I wonder what we can do to get Jomboy to make more Cricket videos? 🤔🤔
"I wonder what we can do..." Probably, watch, hit the like button, make a comment, and share with your friends and socials...
Jimmy, I need a deep dive on cricket rules. I want to enjoy this as much as you do.
Great break down. Nice to see an American into cricket! I love baseball too!
I’ve recently discovered your channel and saw you talk a little bit about cricket, being a kiwi I was going to suggest you do a video about this great triumph for nz cricket, So glad to see you already talking about it
Love it Jomboy! Keep them coming!
Love this. though It's a Nightwatchman not a Knights Watchman hehe; also the second ball to Kholi was a yorker. Apart from that you have everything else spot on and your knowledge and narration was awesome.
So good Jomboy, well done.
So good. I grew up watching Cricket but also love Baseball. Go Dodgers! Thank you Jomboy. Great to see you covering both sports.
Can't wait to hear your coverage of the big event of the Southern Summer - Australia vs India, five Test matches. Haven't had a five-Test series against anyone other than England in Australia in a long time.
Kohli sacrificed his wicket so that India persists with the idea of Night Watchman in the future too. 😂😂
Not watched your stuff before jomboy - loving the enthusiasm!
Love the cricket breakdowns!!
Awesome breakdown 👏
3:26 what the FOK 😂
I Enjoy the Cricket Breakdowns!
Thank You.
I do very much enjoy the cricket videos. I also think you should start to cover more disc golf ;)
Enjoying the cricket, keep making them 👍🏻
Great job, Jimmy. Thanks for doing the cricket breakdowns. Just FYI, it's "Night watchman" no "s".
India have historically been similar to the Temu cat tower i bought: susceptible to collapse.
I'm a Kiwi. I started following your baseball commentary because I really enjoyed it despite knowing absolutely nothing about it. I do however know cricket, and i'm so fkn stoked you're now reporting on that
I love Jomboy’s interest in cricket. I’m an American that’s lived in Australia for a while & I’ve played cricket ever since I can remember - makes me feel a sense of patriotic pride to see another yank talk about the sport fluently and passionately. Keep it up brother!!
Definitely love your enthusiasm dude, and your perspective is always something people want to hear. Respectfully would like to say though, as I couldn’t find a comment saying the same, as the term for a lower order substitute batsman is nightwatchman, not ‘nights watch man’. If I was reviewing a baseball game, and I used the term pitchee, or small stop, I would hope that people corrected me too.
They really shit the street in that one.
So funny. Really good breakdowns which I bet are what most mild fans want to see. More sports please.
Keep em coming!
Cheers Jomboy, love it!
The full toss wasn't planned, he just missed his spot. Ravindra's a rookie part-timer with not much control.
Kohli whiffed a full toss in the first innings of the second test and got bowled by Mitchell Santer to lose his wicket for 1 run.
Loving the Cricket indepth reviews man.
As a Kiwi and someone who grew up with NZ, Aussie, and UK commentary analysis, this is the new way to follow cricket.
The odds of New Zealand winning a test series 3-0 in India has got to be north of 1000 to 1. Anyone who put a bet on would be rolling in it
0:51 for Yankees (or non-cricketers really) that ball is bowled flatter and faster so that it doesn't actually grip and spin off the pitch and instead skids through lower, which worked!
"I don't know if a full toss is a strategy". Only if you're Stuart Macgill.
Keep making I enjoying!
Legend, hope some funny things happen in AUS v IND ill be waiting for the videos :D
Didn’t know you guys cover cricket too 🏏
Jomboy. Thank you
Love your video. A bit weird with some of the terms, but it just adds to the flavor / flavour ❤ test cricket must such an eye opener, it really is a test of mental and physical abilities
Enjoy the Jomboy does cricket series, please do the Australian cricket sunmer. If you can lip read some old Australian sledging videos it should be pretty entertaining also
The universal confusion and dismay of clubhouses and coaches always cracks me up lmfao
This was a crazy way to learn that New Zealand beat India in India.
Jomboy Your killing this cricket commentry. Keep going.
What’s the best way to watch cricket live while in the states?
Willow
Thanks for doing cricket. Appreciate it
Jomboy, *please* take a look at some international rugby.
Jimmy completely underselling how big a deal this 3-0 whitewash was. IT IS LITERALLY THE BIGGEST UPSET IN THE HISTORY OF THE SPORT.
Pretty damn close to it. You can't fluke a test match win. Too long a game, too many variables. To win 3-0 in India has NEVER been done by anyone, let alone little ol' NZ.
That was a great breakdown reading bastsmen's lips was hilarious and spot on 😅
Keep doing these!
Such a great and funny breakdown loving it it from Nz
does Jomboy have a video up where he explains what's happening ? Cuz this seems like whimsical baseball. Soundwave detector? Little light up gadgets behind the batsman ?
He has many.
Jomboy's video explaining cricket in baseball terms:

As a kiwi I'm still beaming, so damn proud of the boys
i'm susbscribed, and have all set for notifications, but this didn't show up in my notifications... odd. Please yes, more cricket. thank you
Greatest cricket video ever dude loved it
I really enjoyed that. Thanks and you might be right. I was blinking the morning after when I got to see the score and "what the heck happened?"
Men sweeping India in India, women winning the World Cup. What a glorious month in the history of Aotearoan cricket 🇳🇿🏏👏😀
Haven't seen a collapse like this since October 30th, 2024
You oughtta be a pro caller Jomboy that was great especially for a baseball native.
