I own both saws. And love em both. I can’t say that one is better than the other. Top of the line equipment . I would say that those two saws are the two best currently available.
It all comes down to what you like. I heli logged for 13 years in some of the shittiest conditions here in British Columbia and we used Husqvarna 394s,395s and 3120s but I always preferred stihl 066s and 088s, found they broke down a lot less than huskys. I personally have a 200 T for climbing (best top handle saw ever), an oldie but goodie 038 magnum 2 and a kick ass older 066 with a 32”Cannon superbar 😎

Ford v Chevy...I have both Stihl and a Husq; both are fine pieces of equipment. These speeds tests are great for TH-cam videos but in the real world; people that are using saws like these care more about which one makes the work easier and the ease of maintenance including a complete tear down rebuild. I’m not a real logger but I ...log...a lot of hours on my saws. I MUCH prefer my Stihl saw. I’ve never rebuilt a motor on either one but I’ve been told the Stihl pro line of saws are designed to be worked on.
So which chainsaw is the dodge version 😂. I’m a Stihl fan, but it’s bc it’s all I know and I’m a creature of habit. I’m a dodge guy truck wise, so while I’m looking for a larger saw, I’m comparing the Stihl 661 and 880 to the Husky 395xp. Suggestions welcome.
@@viperstrike3827 pacific northwest. Pine grows fast. Down here in the south there are a few… I’ll be using a 42” bar on my 661 to take down a 5.5foot wide beech tree this fall. Plenty of Oak and Maple down here wider than 36” too, but these are 100+ year okd trees, and not that common.
This is literally the first time I have seen the Stihl win the race between these two saws. I run 2511t, 355t, 501p, 620pw all Echos (also have an old cs440 Echo that runs great yet) and one Makita(Dolmar) 7900 so not a fanboy to either Stihl or Husqvarna. I think either are great saws and I am trying to decide which one I would buy of the two as Echo doesn’t have a decent saw above 60cc in my opinion.
That’s a nice 661 you got. That 395 appeared to be an older model, judging by the older style decal. Pretty sure those went away in ‘05. Great work in both saws Julian

The Husqvarna s I find are a high rpm, fast cutting chainsaw but everytime you gas it up I make one pass with a file on the chain to make sure it’s razor sharp. The stihl is a torquey saw plenty of torque.
They are both great saw companies when looking at the professional products. I own huskies but have ran a lot of Sthils. Nowadays I find Sthils to feel very ''plasticky''. Also, Sthil's gas tanks are much smaller. You spend a lot more time chasing your fuel. Husky's hardware does seem to break down more often though. I'm talking kill switches, choke levers, wiring etc. Easy fixes but can be a pain in the ass. Go with whichever shop is closer and gives good service. I go Husky because the parts are interchangeable and the closest Sthil dealer is an hour away.
The 395 was not tuned correctly I run husky n Stihl I could see n hear the husky was running to rich,,, both great saws now u want to talk reliability my 1993 husky 272xp has been in the shop 1 time n my Stihl 029 super has been in the shop 6 times n both saws r meticulously taken care of husky is cut over 500 cords of firewood the husky cuts all the log and the larger limbs and the steel has always been used for cutting the smaller limbs

I think the 395 was from 2009 and the 661 2015. Chain still had the factory edge on it. I test on this setup because it is 100% clean wood and consistent. But I think the question is. Would a .404 RS chain lose that much time after a couple of cuts? Answer - not in this setup. Air filters clean. Same gas. same bar oil. Same sprocket. same bar. same chain.

to me there really is not point in comparing unless you keep it apples to apples as best you can. The anti vibe is nicer on the 661. fuel consumption is a lot more on the 395 then the 661. 661 is just a newer design.
the 661 is a shit saw so save your money. not worth the hassle as it spends more time in the shop being fixed and stihl are dicks to deal with if theres a problem

That's some very good sawing. Making sure both cuts on both saws was the same is very hard to do. It would've been nice to see the rpm's on both saws before the cuts, similar to the way hotsaws' does it. Too bad I can't find the follow up video. Is it still planned? Maybe somebody could share the link?
I think you could cut a little faster if you’re cut was straighter. I bet if I put a 4’ level on that wood it would be a 1/8 off 😂. Bro that cut looks perfect!!
I'm trying decide between the two saws and I just watched 10 videos of this match up and this is the first one that I've seen the Stihl win. I have no dog in the fight. I'm a homeowner with a poulan and a homelite. I'm probably going with the Husky. Same results seem to happen in climbing saw matchups too.

as an owner of the 395 it is defiantly smother and acceleration is more responsive without the metallic rattle of the stihls. I have owned both saws and i am pleased i kept the 395 and sold the 661 as the 395 is just such a nice saw to use. i was given a loan of a 661 and i refused to use it as there noisey things and just dont feel right
IF the guy knows what he’s doing and puts equal work into both saws ... the 395xp will simply stomp on the 661c ... just like the 661c will stomp a 390xp
stihl is always know for torque. listen to a couple videos on the contra. perhaps though if you would of tested the 395 first instead it may of taken the win. would be a more fair test with fresh chains on each saw. i bet you would have faster cut times with 3/8 chain.
agree 3/8th would be faster no doubt. I used .404 for 2 reasons... 1. a used .404 chain would push both saws and really show power. I fear had I used 3/8ths than people might have said well the husky has more torque...which actually I think it does, but difference is very close, closer than I would have guessed. 2. because there is no way to guarantee two used chains were the same and .404 can really hold it's edge (in my opinion about 3x as long as 3/8ths). So did the chain lose sharpness after only 2 cuts in clean boards. I've gone through many 100' rolls of stihl .404 and based on that in my opinion. I would say not a chance.

one of reasons I used .404 was because it doesn't dull very easily. Especially in the clean cut oak boards I was cutting. MS661 - 51.7 first cut, if it dulled it wouldn't of been 51.4 in the 2nd cut.

without the saws being broken in first it wouldn't be a fair test. I have a number of 661s. On avg they require about 12 tanks through them before they are broken in. This one had 16. The 395 has always been a runner to me. I don't think it's fallen off.
And in a real - scenario with equal work the husky 395xp would win most every time .... check out hotsaws 101 where he insane-0-izes both saws and declares the 395 the winner ... everything else being equal the larger motor will win

That’s not true. Stihl has more power. Husky has more speed but on big hardwood the husky dogs down where as a stihl doesn’t as often. They are evenly matched but stihl is built better and are more balanced.

I've got to agree with others... a healthy 395xp should stomp a healthy 661. And that is nothing against a 661, they are both beast saws. My 395xp (actually all saws...) smokes like that on the first start after it has been sitting unused for a while... when was the last time it was in wood? How old was the gas in the tank vs. the Stihl? Also, the chain started chattering in the 2nd cut with the 395, that obviously slowed down the cut. Did he let up on the pressure at the end.... hard to tell.

And the store ppl, didn't know much either... So, I bought what I thought would solve my problem - remove a branch or 2. I do have some water oak trees and 3 or 4 pecan trees, I want to cut down, out of my yard. I don't care to keep the wood; I simply want the trees down and off my property. And I don't have $1000s to pay tree removal companies... So, I'm pretty much a DIY person...
I now own a 395XP and my friend owns the Stihl MS661. My 395 is faster than his Stihl all day every day just like all other youtube videos show. Congratulations on being the only one that can make the 395 slower than the 661. Fake news folks.

To my mind, rpm = chain speed which = cutting speed. You can only feed a sharp chain as much wood as the rakers will allow. If the chain is spinning twice as fast, it'll cut the log twice as fast.
Husky hi tops are definitely ugly saws. Don’t get me wrong, the 395 is king when it comes to stumping power, but the front chain tensioner and outboard clutch are just outdated downfalls of the saw.

I'm a logger. A 395 was always my favorite, until I used a 661. Use one everyday now

I reckon the Husky needed a bit more tuning to bring it to life more, it just sounded a little flat in the top end.
You are right.it was not tip top shape.
I would say it sounded normal. It wasn't 4-stroking so it wasn't rich and it didn't seem like it was lean either.

Stihl is lighter, more torque, and breaks down less. Literally no reason to go husky ever

You need to throw a tune on the husky, its not running proper at all. 395 running proper will roast a 661 for a fact.

i been promising a little video about one PETIT collection the saws,but i am not in the mood now,one day i will my old MS 290 that one cut wood with nails buy mistake,,,the other 3 new never used,,,455 rancher,,,,365 x torq,,,and 3120 xp,,,,,,and the BARS only talking about WHEN IS SHOW TIME,,be patient.i would like to had the 395 if i find one good price NEW maybe i will.

I've got to agree with others... a healthy 395xp should stomp a healthy 661. And that is nothing against a 661, they are both beast saws. My 395xp (actually all saws...) smokes like that on the first start after it has been sitting unused for a while... when was the last time it was in wood? How old was the gas in the tank vs. the Stihl?
Also, the chain started chattering in the 2nd cut with the 395, that obviously slowed down the cut. Did he let up on the pressure at the end.... hard to tell.

Umm, HomeDepot bought saws - I think a Poulan PRO

And the store ppl, didn't know much either... So, I bought what I thought would solve my problem - remove a branch or 2. I do have some water oak trees and 3 or 4 pecan trees, I want to cut down, out of my yard. I don't care to keep the wood; I simply want the trees down and off my property. And I don't have $1000s to pay tree removal companies... So, I'm pretty much a DIY person...

I now own a 395XP and my friend owns the Stihl MS661. My 395 is faster than his Stihl all day every day just like all other youtube videos show. Congratulations on being the only one that can make the 395 slower than the 661. Fake news folks.

who the hell thinks a husky is a good looking saw? cuz i for one think its one of the ugliest saws ever made...stihl wins all the way around. i have a 661 m tronic model and its a torquey monster!!! a husky has more rpm less torque and sucks on gas!!

To my mind, rpm = chain speed which = cutting speed. You can only feed a sharp chain as much wood as the rakers will allow. If the chain is spinning twice as fast, it'll cut the log twice as fast.
Husky hi tops are definitely ugly saws. Don’t get me wrong, the 395 is king when it comes to stumping power, but the front chain tensioner and outboard clutch are just outdated downfalls of the saw.

Best Lawn/ Landscaping I fix and use chainsaws all the time. I heat my house off wood so I am cutting wood a lot and run a Husqvarna 55 😉
