If you're going to be using whips, I recommend "whip stacking", or using several whips to either buff the whip attack speed, or apply more summon tag damage or both. Some good ones for this are Snapthorn, Durendal, and Dark Harvest because they all increase the attack speed of all your whips for a short time. This can be done by doing one hit with one or two of these and then switching to a stronger whip like the morning star or kaleidoscope, this makes them attack much faster and greatly increases whip DPS
Yup, I'd even consider using obsidian armor for most, if not all of the playthrough since you don't need the extra minion slots of the other armors. Although the extra summon damage might outweigh the massively buffed whips in your eyes, since the main part of the challenge is the summons
Here is a tip. The slime mount is considered a minion and deals summon damage when you bounce on enemies, along with getting buffed when you have anything that buffs minion damage. Not sure if you would want to use it or not but it technically would not be breaking the rules of the challenge.
Here's a tip I heard: When you use multiple whips together, the summon tag damage stacks - this means that hitting a boss with more than one whip (eg snapthorn and spinal tap) gives you far more dps than a single whip would! Also, what are you using to increase the max summon limit?
The effects also stack, meaning that you can use a Snapthorn for the speed boost and then switch to Spinal Tap for damage. It gets insane once you grab the Firecracker, that plus the Durendal is some of the best summoner DPS in the whole game. Really no point in upgrading it until the Kaleidoscope
Here's just a bunch of random advice I have for you as I watch the video: Finch is only really usable if you resummon it repeatedly on the enemy, especially after trapping the enemy in some way. Abigail suffers greatly without the extra slots dedicated to her, she'll probably not be much better. Since you have infinite minion slots, Obsidian armour will probably be your best bet until Hallowed armour. The survivability of spider isn't that much better, and the damage boosts are worse since you don't care about the minion slots anymore. Obsidian's whip range and speed alone invalidates Bee, Spider, and Forbidden outright for this challenge. Feral claws' autoswing is an absolute must if using whips at all, and trust me, you want to be. Stacking multiple whips is paramount for damage, practice stacking just two of them if that scares you. The extra Tag Damage will be major for you, since your minions are on average worse than they should be at all progression points. Your damage is much higher if you use a whip that boosts your melee speed [next patch, they will boost only your whip speed :( ] before swinging with your high damage whips. In prehardmode, that means using Snapthorn before Spinal Tap. In hardmode, you add Durendal between the two (or replace one of them with it if you're _weak,_ either is fine but I'd recommend swapping out Spinal Tap), then substitute every whip for the weakest one that works like it afterward, ending with Dark Harvest before Kaleidoscope, with Durendal before both if you're really comfortable stacking thrice. This may accidentally constitute most of your damage if you're still wearing Obsidian armour. Do not bother using Firecracker at any point in time, your weaker minions will steal the procs and make it useless. In early hardmode, Cool Whip may be worth using if you can stack the other two good whips well, but I wouldn't count on it. Most minions nowadays inflict Local s, which basically means they don't interfere with any other attacks, though they can still be stopped by Global s, which are fairly self-explanitory; they affect all attacks. Lesser known and used are Static s, which apply to a specific projectile type as a whole (fun fact: minions are projectiles too). Every minion is now either Static or Local, except for the Sharknado's melee attack, which is Global (yes, it has contact damage, and no, it doesn't use it deliberately). I should mention also that all this applies only to piercing attacks; single hitters like the Hornet Staff do not create any s at all. Shark tooth necklace will realistically not help you very much. If you want the defense reduction, the Ichor flask is there for you, and it works on whips! The only stat that matters for you as summoner from Feral Claws and its upgrades (besides autoswing on whips) is the melee speed and other non-melee stats. Since melee speed never improves over Feral Claws, this means you care most about the Berserker's Glove's 8 defense, so make sure to grab it; that's 4/6/8 (classic/expert/master) less damage taken per hit for every hit, twice as much as warding! Overall, this seems like a very fun challenge! I'd be up for it if I wasn't already doing one of my own (not uploading to youtube, it's private and not much harder than normal gameplay)
I recently started playing/watching terraria and it's nice to have fun playthrough instead of everyone circle jerking how easy the game is on master mode with calamity death mode. Thanks for playing this!
Very neat idea, very neat challenge! Couple of tips off the top of my head: 1) tag damage stacks with multiple whips if you hit fast enough 2) minions LOVE armor penetration, the shark tooth necklace + honey necklace is great with the tag damage bonus 3) you can actually get even more armor penetration by holding a melee weapon while under the effect of a sharpening station. The games counts the armor penetration buff on your minions attacks too! 4) minion immunity frames have been separated because the stardust dragon caused problems, you can have all minions hit at the same time now! Hope this helps!
wow, i just watched this entire playthrough today cause i missed when it came out and i was inspired to play it myself. i get into the world and 2 pinkies spawn within 5 mins. not only that but i get the slime staff...... Absolutly loved this playthrough as always!!
There is a cool technique summoners can use called "whip stacking" in which you can add the tag damage of multiple whips together by swapping between them in quick succession. This technique is especially useful in late pre-hardmode and most of hardmode. The snapthorn and Spinal tap can be used in conjunction to quickly clear the hungry and the wall, and later the firecracker and durendal become the "go to" for stacking the quickened speed the durendal gives with the explosion effect of the firecracker. Very late in hardmode, the Dark harvest can replace your Durendal for applying speed, and the Kaleidoscope can mostly replace the firecracker for damage and tag damage. The Morningstar is also quite good with the speed buff, and it is always helpful to add its tag damage to the mix every once and a while, but the Kaleidoscope's crit ability is my favorite. Good luck on the challenge, and don't underestimate the Sanguine and Blade Staffs, those are priority pickups
What an absolute blast! As a summoner main all my life this pleases me greatly to see. The infinite minion slot idea is genius. I've always wanted to see all the different minions together but there's no way to do that even with Endgame gear. Truly great video and can't wait to see more!
Thank you for this, got me to re-play Terraria after five years, may not know how todo the editing/modding to make the Max Minion's and max buffs increased, but enjoyed watching.
a lot of terraria youtubers i watch can't keep up the level of creativity this channel brings. always keeps things interesting with every video. can't wait for youtube's algorithm to bring you to the front page
As someone who pretty much plays entirely summoner and cleared master mode with it 1. swap between snapthorn and spinal tap every few seconds to get the perks of both, they compliment each other, snapthorn speeds up attack speed on ALL weapons after a hit for 3 seconds, and poisons them for 4, spinal tap is the damage dealer, just swap back to snapthorn for a single hit every few seconds to amplify it's damage greatly. There's actually very little reason to ever use other whips than these two, especially with lots of minions. 2. even post nerf obsidian armor is so strong you'll want to keep it until moonlord, with how many minions you have though it's also possible you could go tankier and rely on dodging for longer. 3. arena backwalls can help with spiders at the start of hard mode, it'll allow them to follow and grab on the mechanical bosses much faster, though with only one it's utility will be more limited than usual 4. not sure if you'll include them in this run but don't forget sentry summon weapons
To be honest, I advise using the obsidian armour until tiki armour. All of its stats are better than spider armour apart from number of minion slots - which doesn't apply here.
Summoner is my favorite class, so I'm really interested in seeing this series. It's almost like... Pokemon Ranger, I guess, going around and gathering a band of little guys to help you
I’ve never said this before but I really like how you Incorporate the natural terrain into your npc houses because I like the aesthetic and I wish to get there someday but for now I’m still in the box homes part like I’ve always been
Little late to the party, but there are probably 2 things I would have considered changing to save time and headaches: 1) Using the party world seed, you can get the Princess right away, who has some special items for sale in that world... including the slime staff =p 2) Getting a void bag and either a money trough or attempt to fight the Deerclops for Chester. For the trough/chester, you can stuff all the staffs into it after summoning, since you don't actually need to have them in your inventory for the minion to stay out. Every time you die, open your storage, summon every minion from it and put the staff back in.
Enjoying this playthrough. Hope you continue in hard mode. I would add to your rules that just because you can use each staff once, that does not mean that you must use each staff you have once. If you find one or more of the low level minions is reducing your overall damage you can unsummon that particular minion
When you first mentioned it in your last challenge, I thought this would be uninteresting and overall a bad challenge. Turns out I was wrong, this is a very neat challenge!
So a few things: Get feral claws, they not only work with melee weapons but also whips, and you can upgrade them to the power glove and then the Berserker's Glove (Which tends to be better for summoners) Summoners can use flasks on their whips, so you can inflict things like ichor and cursed flames if you wanted to If you're gonna be going for armor, spider armor is actually terrible in this scenario. It has worse damage modifiers than the obsidian armor and you lose your whip bonus. The only thing it has in normal play is more minion slots (which is irrelevent here) and about 5 more defence, which isn't much
Best way to get the slime staff is easily with the slime statue. Slimes summoned by statue still drop the staff, so using lava, wiring and a timer, you can get the staff very quickly
This is pretty much always the way I play with minions/summoner class. I like to see the army of minions, because as you've noticed, they're all able to target different enemies. I also nicked a bewitching table (or is it the alchemy table?) from the dungeon so I can have that third minion (even if it is just 10 minutes) in boss fights in my arena.
I love how he tries to get more luck by drinking luck potions and placing a gnome but also while he fights king slime he kills ladybugs wich decreases luck... keep up the videos i love em :)
Definitely a neat twist you've put on it. Also glad you modded in the extra minion slots to allow for a pure summoner run to be at least reasonably quick and varied.
This looks like a super fun and interesting challenge! I don't blame you for doing Journey mode - the early game grinding is horrendous if you're only using Summon weapons. I'm super excited to see you go for the Terraprisma with individual summons. You got this!
At the end, to finish the series, could you please *go mad with power* and infinite slots *and see each damage output of every staffs, using all the slots you have?* Like, a really strong tiger, a huge pile of birbs and a super super super long dragon?
SUMMONER TIPS: 1. Keep useing the shark tooth and stinger necklaces, they can multiply the DPS of your weaker minions by 10x depending on the enemy, and they help a lot with Duke fishron. 2. The Snap thorn also remains greatly useful into mid early hardmode due to its attack speed bonus when dual weilding whips. 3. When making room for and upgrading accessories ditch your shield, it serves no use for a summoner over a stinger necklace! Also try out the Amphibian boots! Or other frog accessories, and in hardmode The Berserker glove is the best glove for summoners. You probably already know a lot of that stuff
Fun challenge. People keep talking about the buff limit, there is a mod to increase the buff limit. The Stinger Necklace is pretty good with the enchanted dagger summon. All damage done with mounts count as summon damage, so I hope you get the queen slime pylon. Please don't forget to gather the sentries. You shouldn't gather each iteration of OOA, but you should definitely see what one of each sentry looks like too.
Feral claws and it's upgrades. (Titan glove, berserkers glove) give whips autoswing and the melee speed increase increases whip speed. Also flasks work for whips so if u get ichor flasks you can give the less damaging minions a dps boost with +20 armor penetration or -20 armor on enemies. Hope this helps
quick tips: there's three whips that provide whip speed bonuses on hit: snapthorn, hallowed whip (can't remember or pronounce the name) and the one from pumpkings. keep one or two on you, since you can whip swap to keep the speed bonus. if you don't want to go warding, use violent, since melee speed is what affects whips. and finally, PLEASE get the flesh gauntlet, it's feral claws with 8 defense for summoners, it's so useful
If you ever need a boost to your dps, using flasks made at the imbuing station sold by the witch doctor can really help, ichor flasks up until you can make venom flasks help destroy bosses
If I remember correctly, unless they pathed in in the latest version, statue slimes still drop their loot (just not any gold), which means the actual quickest way to get the Slime Staff is to set up an auto slime killing farm with a Slime Statue.
I'd say, you need to put everything to menacing and ruthless, because if you add defense to a summoner, you'll have low damage and medium defense, try to dodge the best you can and you will decimate bosses
if youre looking for a good whip armor set, id recommend checking out the monk and shinobi armor from the ooa, the summoning damage plus the melee speed buffs make it an incredible armor set for summoners
Use them sentries, they are good for exploring, the explosive mine in particular is a light source you can put anywhere in your vision, and give out damage, you can also refresh it to dish out damage faster
8:23 i believe that honey blocks are able to generate on the world like that during the world creation, i've found similar honey blocks generated on some worlds
Hey! Your videos are nice things to play in the background while I do work! The music choice is nice, and they are fun to watch, and see how Canadien can survive every new challenge!
summoner main here to explain whip stacking (in a very messy way) it's heavily dependent on what summons you have you should always have an attackrate boosting whip (snapthorn, durendal and dark harvest) and if you have access to one of the two whips that allow crits on minions (kaleidoscope and morning star) (and optionally another whip for special effects (cool whip, firecracker and dark harvest)) you should only be whipstacking 2-3 (4 if you're good) cause most of the buffs gained from whips only last for around 4 seconds now for minions situation one; you have a slow attacking high damage minion (e.g. desert tiger, terraprisma, sanguine bats and abigail (if you consider her high damage :shroog:)) in this case, always use the firecracker because it's explosion effect deals about 2x the damage of the minion (iirc?) situation two; fast attacking low damage minion (e.g. blades ufos) three words, get tag damage your whips have another stat called tag damage, get as much as you can of it i'm not sure EXACTLY how tag damage works but from a quick search it says the amount of tag damage is given to the summon for 4 seconds (ie. bladestaff does 9 (i forgot it's exact damage) damage, you get 19 tag damage, bladestaff does 29 damage per hit for 4 seconds) so yeah huge credits to whoever made that one whipstacking tutorial (i think it was terrasteel?)
Accessories are all about gloves. Feral claws, power glove, titan glove, as much as you can. There is a point where it doesn't help anymore, like the Dark Harvest with 3 gloves doesn't actually hit faster because it swings too fast, but that isn't much of a concern at that point
You can increase finch dps temporarily by targeting someone and then spawning the finch on top. He'll stay still, and if there's a wall or door, the enemy gets stun locked. He does start moving after a really short while.
One thing I would suggest is using multiple whips at the same time, since the effects can stack. I.E. You could use one whip that increases attack speed, then swap to a different whip that does something else. Someone else probably already suggested this, but I figured I could throw it out there.
I love the concept, and journey expert mode decision, this is really neat ^_^ Edit: The one tip I have immediately on my mind for summoner (which I'm sure is probably in the comments already, but just in case) is, that the different attack boosts for minions from different whips stack. So you can use a Thorn Whip for the + minion damage and hit an enemy once, and then switch to the Durendal for both more direct damage, but also boosted minion damage. And as a nice extra, the buffs from the various whips on the player (Like Thorn Whip attack speed) stick around for when you switch whips Edit 2: Also as a nice tidbit (Which I assume is already obsolete in this video): From my testing for FTW Hardcore runs, one tombstone covers an area of 10+2 blocks in each direction (in a square) for the flower to spawn (+2 because the tombstone is a 2x2 tile). The flower only needs 1 space of headroom to spawn, but does in fact require grass. It does not have to be a graveyard biome Edit 3: Ah, one thing I just realized: You can have a maximum of 2 rows of buffs. Considering that you don't seem to use your potions much currently, that's not a problem. But as soon as you get to the complete set of minions part, you probably won't be able to use any buffs anymore (You could just despawn some of the summons by walking into a sunflower, or the Dryad buff, etc.)
apparently there's a certain path through every dungeon. some are more linear so it makes more sense, and maybe if you know how they're generated you would understand the games logic, but the first chest always has a muramasa and the second chest always has a cobalt shield. i can't verify this, but it was consistent on the two worlds i did after learning that
WoS: the balance here looks pretty good. Me having played Calamity Master Malice and seeing the boss not take 5 years: I like this ‘normal’ balance, I should try it more often.
I'd not say one of each minion, but a staff can only be used once, so no multi segment stardust dragon or strong desert tiger. Otherwise the goal of the challenge would kind of be defeated.
i'm pretty sure that's the whole point. he didn't make abigail all buffed up by using her staff several times. so why would he do that with the stardust dragon or desert tiger
Tip: If you play as summoner be sure that all your accessories are warding or something with armor. You have pretty low defense when you are summoner. The rest is just potions, luck and good dodge skills. Oh and patience, lot of patience. Edit: I remember the flinx staff was my first staff when I played master mode first time. It was actually decent having in mind the ×3 health enemies
A good technique for summoner is to utilize more than one whip for bosses. For example let's say you have Durendal and Firecracker. You can hit something with Durendal first to give yourself the melee speed buff and then switch to Firecracker to hit faster with that one while taking advantage of it's unique characteristic. The Feral Claw and it's upgrades make this way easier so you definetly want to keep using those, The Berserker Gloves are highly recommended in particular.
damage of the firecracker explosion depends on the damage of the minion that activates it. it's probably the most powerful whip in the game when used in the right circumstances, but with all the weak minions you have, you'll probably just want to use Durendai, and maybe one other stronger whip like kaleidoscope or morningstar to take advantage of the swing speed. it felt weird seeing you skip the bee armor, but I guess since you're just giving yourself all the slots you won't need it. you also don't need to bother with the bewitching table or summoner potions. Idk if you're gonna bother with old one's army, but the sentries would help out, and the armor is the only thing better than obsidian damage wise until Spooky armor. oh, and don't forget about Flasks.
I think a great takeaway from a playthrough like this or the three block wide world is just how well implemented Journey mode is. You have the unlimited pink pearls, treasure bags, and buff potion ingredients, and also the increased spawn rates to get rare drops, and yet it didn’t even feel like cheating. Just a bit of time saving for your sanity and less time between videos.
In journey mode dungeon exploration, I recommend sticky dynamite to clear the spikes. Also, desert fishing leads to luck potions, which give slightly higher drop rates for rare items. Since you can dupe the oysters, it’s free luck for grinding annoying drops like slime staff or rod of discord Edit: ah, spoke too soon on the luck potions lol
I think something that’d be fun in this challenge with the calamity, amulet of many minions, thorium, and other mods to collect every summon and have them all out at once. You would definitely need a mod that gives you more buff slots though. I current have done all of pre-hard mode with this and it’s been the most fun I’ve had with terraria in a while. I think it’s a worthy play through to have that’s laidback and relaxed
coming back to watch some of these older serieses for entertainment, and it's weird for me now to hear queen bee using the old boss sounds. a lot changes in two-and-a-half years
at start I was disappointed he wasn't going to have infinite minion slots to use one of each minion at all times, when he decided to do that I got so happy
1.4 summoner changes might be one of my fave things about 1.4. Obsidian armor, even after nerf, along with the reach of a whip made summoner way more bearable early game. Heck, pre-nerf I was bringing Obsidian through mech bosses because of how silly the range/speed of whips where. Was like playing melee, but better.
Definitely more fun to see all the minion types at once, but if I'd play this challenge myself the fun would lie in optimizing the best minion types for each boss.
Awesome playthrough. I'm glad to see you starting expert mode stuff, and I feel validated with you doing it on journey mode lol. It is much better to skip the grinding by doing so.
feral claws and it’s upgrades are a huge part of summoner. I usually opt for the berserker glove over the fire gauntlet because you don’t really need the fire damage and the extra defence is nice. Also whip stacking is useful, switching between different whips to gain multiple buffs at once. I commonly use durendel for the attack speed buff and cool whip for a nice buff
Something I’d suggest is getting obsidian armour basically immediatly, because it is possible, it’s the best pre-hardmode armour and it’s pretty easy to get, and make sure you have potions ready at all times, summoner is the weakest off all classes at start and mid game so be weary Oh and about the whips, while yes the snap thorn can be annoying to get and take a a little while, I would prioritise it the moment you get a summon, the leather whip is a pain since you need the zoologist
Summonner tip: obsidian armor. That's really all you need lol. Lower defense doesn't matter as much since all summonner armours already have pretty low def for their tiers, and the increased range helps to avoid boss attacks easier. You're better off compensating the low def with potions
The reason honey blocks were found further from the hive is that in world generation, when a queen bee hive is placed honey is placed nearby to help people find the hive.

Here is a tip. The slime mount is considered a minion and deals summon damage when you bounce on enemies, along with getting buffed when you have anything that buffs minion damage. Not sure if you would want to use it or not but it technically would not be breaking the rules of the challenge.
Here's a tip I heard:
When you use multiple whips together, the summon tag damage stacks - this means that hitting a boss with more than one whip (eg snapthorn and spinal tap) gives you far more dps than a single whip would!
Also, what are you using to increase the max summon limit?
He's using Terraria Tweaker 2
The effects also stack, meaning that you can use a Snapthorn for the speed boost and then switch to Spinal Tap for damage. It gets insane once you grab the Firecracker, that plus the Durendal is some of the best summoner DPS in the whole game. Really no point in upgrading it until the Kaleidoscope
Here's just a bunch of random advice I have for you as I watch the video:

Awesome analysis!
while playing with a friend, he got the slime staff twice at the start of a world, once ate the first slime he killed and once at the 2nd
i never farm KS for staff , i search for a statue and make an afk farm for it
(can be done before DG)
The feral claws and all of its upgrades like the fire gauntlet help whips a lot. I think most melee speed buffs help.
I recently started playing/watching terraria and it's nice to have fun playthrough instead of everyone circle jerking how easy the game is on master mode with calamity death mode. Thanks for playing this!
Very neat idea, very neat challenge!
Couple of tips off the top of my head:
1) tag damage stacks with multiple whips if you hit fast enough
2) minions LOVE armor penetration, the shark tooth necklace + honey necklace is great with the tag damage bonus
3) you can actually get even more armor penetration by holding a melee weapon while under the effect of a sharpening station.

Pools of honey and honey blocks sometimes generate close to hives to point you towards them, so it's not weird world generation for once
I never knew that. Guess I still have much to learn! Thanks!
This was really fun to watch, as always! I’d love to see you continue it to Moon Lord. ^-^
I really like that you play in Journey Mode and use it fully, and that you care about little things like the lava fall
a lot of terraria youtubers i watch can't keep up the level of creativity this channel brings. always keeps things interesting with every video. can't wait for youtube's algorithm to bring you to the front page
As someone who pretty much plays entirely summoner and cleared master mode with it
1. swap between snapthorn and spinal tap every few seconds to get the perks of both, they compliment each other, snapthorn speeds up attack speed on ALL weapons after a hit for 3 seconds, and poisons them for 4, spinal tap is the damage dealer, just swap back to snapthorn for a single hit every few seconds to amplify it's damage greatly. There's actually very little reason to ever use other whips than these two, especially with lots of minions.
2. even post nerf obsidian armor is so strong you'll want to keep it until moonlord, with how many minions you have though it's also possible you could go tankier and rely on dodging for longer.
3. arena backwalls can help with spiders at the start of hard mode, it'll allow them to follow and grab on the mechanical bosses much faster, though with only one it's utility will be more limited than usual
4. not sure if you'll include them in this run but don't forget sentry summon weapons
I'd love to see this run go to the end, I want to see the massive army you can form
To be honest, I advise using the obsidian armour until tiki armour. All of its stats are better than spider armour apart from number of minion slots - which doesn't apply here.
Summoner is my favorite class, so I'm really interested in seeing this series. It's almost like... Pokemon Ranger, I guess, going around and gathering a band of little guys to help you
I’ve never said this before but I really like how you
Incorporate the natural terrain into your npc houses because I like the aesthetic and I wish to get there someday but for now I’m still in the box homes part like I’ve always been
Little late to the party, but there are probably 2 things I would have considered changing to save time and headaches:
1) Using the party world seed, you can get the Princess right away, who has some special items for sale in that world... including the slime staff =p
2) Getting a void bag and either a money trough or attempt to fight the Deerclops for Chester.
I love that this is seen as a challenge, because this is deadass what I did during my first summoner playthrough
When you first mentioned it in your last challenge, I thought this would be uninteresting and overall a bad challenge. Turns out I was wrong, this is a very neat challenge!
So a few things:
Get feral claws, they not only work with melee weapons but also whips, and you can upgrade them to the power glove and then the Berserker's Glove (Which tends to be better for summoners)
Summoners can use flasks on their whips, so you can inflict things like ichor and cursed flames if you wanted to
If you're gonna be going for armor, spider armor is actually terrible in this scenario. It has worse damage modifiers than the obsidian armor and you lose your whip bonus. The only thing it has in normal play is more minion slots (which is irrelevent here) and about 5 more defence, which isn't much
use feral claw to autoswing whips
Whips also work with flasks
Best way to get the slime staff is easily with the slime statue. Slimes summoned by statue still drop the staff, so using lava, wiring and a timer, you can get the staff very quickly
This is pretty much always the way I play with minions/summoner class. I like to see the army of minions, because as you've noticed, they're all able to target different enemies. I also nicked a bewitching table (or is it the alchemy table?) from the dungeon so I can have that third minion (even if it is just 10 minutes) in boss fights in my arena.
collecting all the minions and summoning them all at once. this is Yrimir's mission in the summoner playthrough come true.
10:47 WoS grabbed one of the most rarest paintings in the game and doesn't said anything, truly a man
Feral claws and it's upgrades.
You're basically a Pokemon Trainer now.
This is an interesting run the rules with stack summons were something that i was curious about
8:23 i believe that honey blocks are able to generate on the world like that during the world creation, i've found similar honey blocks generated on some worlds
Hey! Your videos are nice things to play in the background while I do work! The music choice is nice, and they are fun to watch, and see how Canadien can survive every new challenge!
Tip
You keep your distance from enemies as much as possible, it's not your fight, it's your minions.
summoner main here to explain whip stacking (in a very messy way)
it's heavily dependent on what summons you have
you should always have an attackrate boosting whip (snapthorn, durendal and dark harvest)
and if you have access to one of the two whips that allow crits on minions (kaleidoscope and morning star)
(and optionally another whip for special effects (cool whip, firecracker and dark harvest))
you should only be whipstacking 2-3 (4 if you're good) cause most of the buffs gained from whips only last for around 4 seconds
now for minions
situation one;
you have a slow attacking high damage minion (e.g. desert tiger, terraprisma, sanguine bats and abigail (if you consider her high damage :shroog:))
in this case, always use the firecracker because it's explosion effect deals about 2x the damage of the minion (iirc?)
situation two;
fast attacking low damage minion (e.g. blades ufos)
three words, get tag damage
your whips have another stat called tag damage, get as much as you can of it
i'm not sure EXACTLY how tag damage works but from a quick search it says the amount of tag damage is given to the summon for 4 seconds (ie. bladestaff does 9 (i forgot it's exact damage) damage, you get 19 tag damage, bladestaff does 29 damage per hit for 4 seconds) so yeah
huge credits to whoever made that one whipstacking tutorial (i think it was terrasteel?)
Journey expert seems like the sweet spot for challenge runs because you can cut out the grind when you do a lot of runs but still keep the challenge
I love the concept, and journey expert mode decision, this is really neat ^_^
Edit: The one tip I have immediately on my mind for summoner (which I'm sure is probably in the comments already, but just in case) is, that the different attack boosts for minions from different whips stack. So you can use a Thorn Whip for the + minion damage and hit an enemy once, and then switch to the Durendal for both more direct damage, but also boosted minion damage. And as a nice extra, the buffs from the various whips on the player (Like Thorn Whip attack speed) stick around for when you switch whips
Edit 2: Also as a nice tidbit (Which I assume is already obsolete in this video): From my testing for FTW Hardcore runs, one tombstone covers an area of 10+2 blocks in each direction (in a square) for the flower to spawn (+2 because the tombstone is a 2x2 tile). The flower only needs 1 space of headroom to spawn, but does in fact require grass. It does not have to be a graveyard biome
Edit 3: Ah, one thing I just realized: You can have a maximum of 2 rows of buffs. Considering that you don't seem to use your potions much currently, that's not a problem. But as soon as you get to the complete set of minions part, you probably won't be able to use any buffs anymore (You could just despawn some of the summons by walking into a sunflower, or the Dryad buff, etc.)
apparently there's a certain path through every dungeon. some are more linear so it makes more sense, and maybe if you know how they're generated you would understand the games logic, but the first chest always has a muramasa and the second chest always has a cobalt shield.
i can't verify this, but it was consistent on the two worlds i did after learning that
Your remix of the challenge is very appreciated, makes it way better. I think I'll do it too one day.
Otherwise the goal of the challenge would kind of be defeated.
i'm pretty sure that's the whole point. he didn't make abigail all buffed up by using her staff several times. so why would he do that with the stardust dragon or desert tiger
gotta say your music choices are like... super on point, and always are.
15:54 i love how the bird is looking at the gnome
Tip: If you play as summoner be sure that all your accessories are warding or something with armor. You have pretty low defense when you are summoner. The rest is just potions, luck and good dodge skills. Oh and patience, lot of patience.
Edit: I remember the flinx staff was my first staff when I played master mode first time. It was actually decent having in mind the ×3 health enemies
scrolled down as far as i could in my "liked videos" playlist. i know for a fact that this isnt my first liked video, but im glad its one of them
A good technique for summoner is to utilize more than one whip for bosses.
Ah yes, the "catch them all" playthrough.
I love seeing all the minions lining behind you like little ducklings
damage of the firecracker explosion depends on the damage of the minion that activates it. it's probably the most powerful whip in the game when used in the right circumstances, but with all the weak minions you have, you'll probably just want to use Durendai, and maybe one other stronger whip like kaleidoscope or morningstar to take advantage of the swing speed.
it felt weird seeing you skip the bee armor, but I guess since you're just giving yourself all the slots you won't need it. you also don't need to bother with the bewitching table or summoner potions.
Idk if you're gonna bother with old one's army, but the sentries would help out, and the armor is the only thing better than obsidian damage wise until Spooky armor.
oh, and don't forget about Flasks.
I really love how you use Legend of zelda minish cap music, it's just really cool and nostalgic.
10:13 the music perfectly aligns with the whip cracks
I think a great takeaway from a playthrough like this or the three block wide world is just how well implemented Journey mode is. You have the unlimited pink pearls, treasure bags, and buff potion ingredients, and also the increased spawn rates to get rare drops, and yet it didn’t even feel like cheating. Just a bit of time saving for your sanity and less time between videos.
Man so good! I’d love to see you go the whole way too! Great video! I think the algorithm is really gonna like this vid :)
I’ve been waiting so long for this challenge, I’m so glad to finally watch it
In journey mode dungeon exploration, I recommend sticky dynamite to clear the spikes. Also, desert fishing leads to luck potions, which give slightly higher drop rates for rare items. Since you can dupe the oysters, it’s free luck for grinding annoying drops like slime staff or rod of discord
Edit: ah, spoke too soon on the luck potions lol
I think something that’d be fun in this challenge with the calamity, amulet of many minions, thorium, and other mods to collect every summon and have them all out at once. You would definitely need a mod that gives you more buff slots though. I current have done all of pre-hard mode with this and it’s been the most fun I’ve had with terraria in a while. I think it’s a worthy play through to have that’s laidback and relaxed
Orbama can’t be used here bc he’s not a minion, he is *GOD*
Make deadly sphere staff orbama
The castlevania music during the blood moon was a nice touch. Made me smile
coming back to watch some of these older serieses for entertainment, and it's weird for me now to hear queen bee using the old boss sounds. a lot changes in two-and-a-half years
at start I was disappointed he wasn't going to have infinite minion slots to use one of each minion at all times, when he decided to do that I got so happy
Was like playing melee, but better.
terraria, but you switch classes after each boss
This challenge in Calamity would be awesome, considering the huge amount of summoner items added in the mod
Definitely more fun to see all the minion types at once, but if I'd play this challenge myself the fun would lie in optimizing the best minion types for each boss.
Never thought that bowser’s inside story would be so appropriate for so many moments in terraria
Awesome playthrough. I'm glad to see you starting expert mode stuff, and I feel validated with you doing it on journey mode lol. It is much better to skip the grinding by doing so.
The slime staff farming really puts your dream luck video into perspective
feral claws and it’s upgrades are a huge part of summoner. I usually opt for the berserker glove over the fire gauntlet because you don’t really need the fire damage and the extra defence is nice. Also whip stacking is useful, switching between different whips to gain multiple buffs at once. I commonly use durendel for the attack speed buff and cool whip for a nice buff
Something I’d suggest is getting obsidian armour basically immediatly, because it is possible, it’s the best pre-hardmode armour and it’s pretty easy to get, and make sure you have potions ready at all times, summoner is the weakest off all classes at start and mid game so be weary
Oh and about the whips, while yes the snap thorn can be annoying to get and take a a little while, I would prioritise it the moment you get a summon, the leather whip is a pain since you need the zoologist
advanced summoner tip: if you use multiple whips in a short duration you gain all of there buffs. us summoners know this as whip stacking
