    Some things to point out to all of those WoW players that are just interested in this.
    Unlike WoW, FFXIV doesnt have a public test realm or anything like it, they dont test the boss publicly and the normal raids are released at the same time than the savage raids (savage would be akin to heroic/mythic) so all of those WF players are generally going to those fights entirely blind, sometimes you can find some points of comparision like "oh, this boss is related to another boss from a previous raid so they could have similar mechanics" and it does happen but for the most part, they do have entirely new and unique mechanics.
    Now, Ultimates (which are the raids being shown here) are kinda different to this, Ultimates are a retell of previous raids, for example The Epic of Alexander is a retell of the Alexander raids released on Heavensward where they picked a couple of the most important bosses from that raid and put them in a gauntlet, so while they did obviously reuse some of the mechanics from the original fights, they were changed and augmented to a ridiculous degree, so while a lot of wf raid groups went to re do the original Alexander raids just to prepare for TEA, a lot of it was entirely new.
    On that topic its also worth bringing up the DBM, because everyone is going in blind at the same time, DBM has to be very vaguely set up by the players themselves while progging, yea some updates do come out that will just give the actual information to everyone without having to set it up yourself but thats after many people have actually cleared and the fight is thoroughly broke down, for WF this is not the case, they all set it up as they go just so they dont suffer as much (also worth pointing out that specifically this group that got the WF on TEA set up the DBM beforehand in case the bosses did abilities from their original fights but thats about it).

      I think a lot of people approach this game with a mentality of "but WoW does it this way and that is how I like it" and get stuck on that. Or they see the character design and immidiately dismiss it for a number of reasons. Some reasons I get, in other cases I am like "bro, get over it. You're being silly." It is indeed a case of just looking past the design and subverting expectations.

      People experiencing culture shock with things like FF14 is always strange to me, but I guess a lot of WoW players just... play WoW and not really anything else. Growing up playing all sorts of video games, I actually can't even imagine what people mean by culture shock. Like I see some people really dislike FFXIV's UI and I just don't get it. Not "don't get it" as in I think they're wrong, but like... to me, it's just a functional, simple UI. Whereas I've always found WoW's default UI terribly cumbersome, especially for healers. And when once you're finished modding it it looks completely ridiculous. I've always found the "here's my cube of abilities in the center of the screen and they're all 10 times the size of my other abilities" thing a lot of WoW raiders do to look absolutely terrible, as when I raid in WoW I like keeping everything neat and uniform.
      I dunno, just the different ways different people approach games I suppose.

      In one of the first raids I knew I was playing Final Fantasy when the raid stood there doing nothing while the big bad monologued for 5 minutes, slowly climbed into his giant mech and cast a spell that destroyed half the world.
      I was enjoying it until every time you beat a bad guy you let them run away only for them to come back stronger and fight you again in the next area. Or joining forces with the dude who 5 minutes ago tried to blow up the whole world as if he won't just stab you in the back to steal the magic crystal and try to destroy the world again.
      The Alexander quest was great, except for the part where you let the boss walk into your base, deliver his monologue and then slowly walk away without even trying to stop him. Then everyone goes back to discussing how they just need to kill the boss to end the whole thing.

    Spell effects of other players can be turned off (or set to limited). The UI in game has customization options. Cast bars will be in different places on the screen depending on where the player wants them. Spellbars can be hidden completely, all the spell damage numbers can be hidden, as well as most else you don't want to look at. It is possible to play with very minimal on-screen clutter if that is the player's preference and this is all possible without add-ons, just with the normal UI. Ultimate fights tend to be very subtle in the way mechanics interact, and as a result it's easy to think that a phase is easier/simpler than it is unless you already have indepth knowledge about it. It's cool to see preach doing stuff like this. When I first looked at FF fights before jumping in, they really seemed overwhelming at first, but a good thing that this game does since the start is to not throw everything at you at first. Preach is looking at the most mechanic intensive fight in the game here, and even veterans struggle to understand some mechanics at first, so it's natural to be overwhelming.
    But after the build-up since ARR we get plenty of experience to understand the different mechanics that the game introduce to a point where normal raids (which have plenty of mechanics already) can be done with the duty finder (random queue). So after going throgh all he expansions, all the effects and different telegraphs seem natural to me already.
    Some skills are way too flashy for someone's taste (like myself and preach) so we often disable some effects to make the fight cleaner. I personally like to see the animations from my black mage but I disable everything else so I can see the boss better, for instance.

    So, in terms of which one makes for more fun and interesting fights, at the high level:
    Source - Was a tank main and DPS off spec in WoW through Legion and the first two tiers of BFA raid progression at the mythic level, also raided in FFXIV Savage content during the first tier of Eden (the raids in Shadowbringers)
    Firstly, a couple things to understand going into it: FFXIV is cross platform between PC and PS4/5, and so raid encounters have to be designed under the assumption that the players are able to complete the encounter without necessarily being able to communicate with one another via text or speech. Additionally, unlike WoW (which supports addons, and the raid encounters are now actually designed under the assumptions players are using addons like DBM), the game does not support addons. So bear that in mind when comparing the two.
    The games test different skill sets. FFXIV is more about memorizing highly complex patterns, while WoW has simpler patterns, but throws more things at you that change things up and force you to react to sudden changes in the plan.
    Now, in terms of which is actually more fun/engaging at the high level? Depends on role. Unfortunately FFXIV doesn't quite have a handle on how to make tank gameplay fun and engaging, and the ease of difficulty of the dungeons (which only have one difficulty level which is roughly equivalent to heroic in WoW), as well as the raid design, make it all that much worse. You see, most non-caster DPS in FFXIV use a combo system that is really cool. But they used that system for tanks as well, which I feel is a poor design choice.
    Now every other role? I'd give it to FFXIV, although I would say a lot of it comes down to the sheer complexity of your rotations as a DPS and how that plays to the raid design. DPS gameplay is far more engaging in FFXIV than in WoW, and if the raid designs were more about reactive gameplay rather proactive, heavily scripted design, it would actually be too much. Class design would HAVE to be dumbed down by a fair bit if they added more reactive elements to raid encounters in FFXIV. Very few people would be able to manage playing the classes, as complex as they are, while being able to manage reactive elements in the raids.
    And healer gameplay (at least as an Astrologian, I can't speak on the other two healer classes) is by far more fun and engaging than any healer is in WoW to play.

    It's funny because I have always thought that WoW could use more effects, especially for the classes. Pressing a button in WoW feels so unimpactful. Did watch some videos and am kinda amazed that that this is not done by so many raiders especially the ones doing the harder raids. Is there a reason for that to not disable those things later on?

    For WoW players or beginner FF14 players, the limit break bar is shared across all players. The number of bars indicates the level of the LB, not how many times you can use it. Using an LB depletes all three bars for every player. Tank LB is either useless or required depending on if the boss has a massive raidbuster mechanic or not. Healer LB is only useful at level 3, when it provides a mass battle rez. Great as wipe insurance. DPS LB is the go-to if you dont need either of those other two, which is most of the time, outside of savage and ultimate fights.

    • @roetheboat1
      @roetheboat1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      As far as I'm aware, there ISN'T a DBM for FF14. The closest would have been stuff put together by individual raid teams to automate some stuff (like placing markers) as the fight progressed. But even in those situations, the developers ended up restricting player markers so that you couldn't move them once the fight started if they felt it was being abused.
      You can look up a boss fight to see if there is a guide. I'll usually look up a text guide to have some idea on the different boss mechanics while I'm waiting in the queue for a specific dungeon/boss/raid. Unlike DBM, which may display stuff on the screen added in by the addon developers, all of the various stuff on the screen happening during FF14 battles were programmed by the devs.
      Also, unlike with WoW, game testing for the expansions and patches is handled by an in-house group of QA people at Square-Enix. This means that sometimes there might not be any good guides available for fights, especially if you start playing through a new expansion right when it released (if you pre-ordered the expansion, you actually get "Pre-Order Access" which means you can start playing a few days before the official release).

    dude, looking at TEA first... I cleared E1S ~ E8S, and some mechanics in TEA are still totally unknown to me (mostly because lots of mechanics are straight from alexander savage, the entire raid tier of Heavensward). It's on another level of precision and performance needed to actually clear it. it's a good showcase of the skill ceiling for ultimate's, tho.
    you also nailed it when you compared it to a dance. the big challenge of the game is performing your rotation perfectly while adjusting to boss mechanics, and coming from WoW, you end up struggling with the bigger GCD timer, and off-GCD skill usage (something really big on some classes, and somewhat ping reliant). CD's usually sync with certain spots in certain fights, so it all turns into muscle memory at some point, and it's really, REALLY satisfying to get to that point.

Some people just have wacky as hell UI positions, mainly because once you have your rotation down, you almost never look at your hotbars and such anyways. Sfia has some spell affects turned off but you can reduce it even more in the options. The amount of options available to players to modify the game completely makes up for lack of mod/addon support.

    There are many mechanics happen at the same time that Mike didn’t see like during phase 2 of TEA, the tanks had to deal with water and thunder debuff then passing. Then DPS need to bait the aoe and tank needed to soak it. Or during phase 3, if you have different numbers, you have to do different things like 3-4 have to bait alex while taking CC damage while 1-2-5-6-7-8 have to take puddle.
    The thing about FF raid fights are everybody has their own job and mechanic responsibilities and you need to learn how to do it well.

    I don't think ultimate fights (The Epic of Alexander for instance) are a good case of 'let me watch and try to understand what's happening', a lot of mechanics can simply not be directly understood directly. For example, you can't understand (on your own at least) what Fate calibration and Enigma Codex mechanics do. Last phase of the fight looks way too easy (and this is why Mike starts thinking the same) if you don't know what Fate Calibration is about.

    • @Henji96
      @Henji96 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For all the ultimates, the last phase is generally the easiest. Tea being somewhat of an exception. The level 70 ults definitely have a "victory lap" kind of feeling.

    • @Ashtari
      @Ashtari 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did a lot of raiding during BC and Wrath, and a lot of the mechanics tended to revolve around standing together and certain mechanics just get grabbed and dragged away. Some fights need something a little more intricate but there’s not a lot of movement heavy combat.

    • @jolt187
      @jolt187 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on how you define "dance," really. Preach seemed to define it as the concept of character position being the most important factor in resolving a mechanic, and really that isn't far off. Every stack, spread, go X, move to Z, stay at Y sequence is a dance. There are honestly an overwhelming amount of mechanics in 14 which check your position in one way or another, so while not every fight is a "dance," every fight has elements of the dance.
      Something that isn't a dance would be Ghuun bombs, for example, because while you need to make it from point A to point B, you don't need to stop at points C, D and E in a very specific sequence before you get there.

    Neat video so far Preach! Again just to help you out, yeah you can always turn off most effects because I know it really can be overwhelming (I keep them on but that's me). But in terms of dance fights, that's just how FF works. There's certainly optimization and challenge in min-maxing one's rotation but that's where the challenge comes in - can you do the dance / mechanics of the fight while also being optimal? But that's also to an extent, WoW, too.
