@@masterkamen371 Definitely is less restarts these days. Whenever inserting a new piece of hardware, even something as innocuous as putting in a USB flash drive or connecting a controller for the first time required a restart back then.
It's more of a suggestion really. Even on windowsXP, ignoring restart doesn't usually make things go all weird and stuff like DOS/9x did and XP is over 20 years old at this point. The 9x family required it for .every.little.thing. Even something as simple as changing your IP address or DNS settings required restart on the 9xes.

Very nice resource, thanks Phil! I respect the ambition of the UoSP3 update packages but from my experience they tend to cause a lot of system instability and make changes to the OS aesthetic that I'm personally not a big fan of. It's been difficult to find a comprehensive repository of official updates that aren't bound to the UoSP packs so I'm grateful we have this now.
Hi Phil! This is neat, but there's no multilanguage support (and we all know that updates that are in any other language than your OS will make the Windows 98 language kinda hybrid). Windows Update Restored or the Windows Security Updates CD would be a better option for such non-english systems.
To be honest even though im not from an english speaking country, all my computers and devices is in english except my phone. It's just easier that way, way more compatibility and all the good guides and how to videos are done in english with english default devices and it just makes it much easier to go about things
Would have been cool to see some before and after benchmarks to see if all the updates affected performance at all, but cool to see that this has been made into such a simple process.

Nice. I needed something like this for Windows 7 recently. I installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 and I needed to run Windows update for over a full day to get all the updates released after the latest roll up pack from 2016.
ooooOo. I love discs like this. It can be fun sorting files yourself. Building your own. But sometimes ...yeah..I like knowing I can just grab a disc and GO! Thanks for the heads up !
This I'd a major timesaver Phil, much appreciated! The only real way to improve it would be to rebuild the 98se iso to have installed all the updates. Not like nlite that tacks them on, but built right into the base installer. It wouldn't make sense to do that with any version of Windows that wasn't well and truly dead, but 98se definitely is, so… The major questions you have on install really are DX 7 or 9, etc.
Very good and explanatory video Phil, thank you! The only drawback I can find on that cd, is that many of us tend to install Windows 98 in other languages. I see it part of the 'retro' experience haha. A similar method is using the 'Microsoft Update CD 2004' that was available in Spanish or German too, maybe you already knew about it :)
Tried it on my Athlon XP 2400+ & Celeron 400(A) builds, which already had everything else installed (with those installations imaged prior), including several updates that I already had which were individually installed manually. It went smoothly on both with following the instructions in this video and adapting as needed (e.g. already had IE 5.5 & WMP 9 on them). Thanks Phil! :-) Usually click the networking icon in the control panel as well to finish updating device drivers after everything was updated.
I might give this a try. I currently don't have much on my 98 machine I tend to use the newest machine I can get something running well on. My modern machine places almost everything I have with my XP machine making up the bulk of the difference. I think I might just backup my save game/settings files and not the whole drive because that likely will be faster for me. And start fresh. I would love to find something a bit more stable. I have had some troubles with my mouse not working on some boots and not others. Also getting it on a home network share would be great especially if I can make it talk to my file server. Thanks for the project idea. You are an inspiration.

Still makes me sad that they kind of axed the fantastic boot sounds that 95, 98, ME/2000, and XP had. I forget that they even have them anymore, but I still love the Win95/Win98/Win2k startup sounds despite hearing them way too many times over the years (I used Win2k I got for free from my Uncle's work until XP SP2 came out, blew my 6th grade graduation money on a copy of XP SP2, and felt kind of let down with how it felt like mostly Win2K with a new theme... that I switched back to classic and never turned back). To be fair, to the people confused by/annoyed at the number of reboots. Yes, they're annoying, but even decent hardware back then with a spinning rust hard drive would boot Win98SE from cold to desktop/login in no time at all. At my dad's office we ran 98SE on computers that came out nearly 10 years after Win2k launched on a closed network for an old database solution, and those minimum XP spec SFF PCs, even with spinning rust, would boot in seconds. Honestly, I wish we still had that setup, or Win2k/XP, instead of upgrading everything to Windows 7 and then 10/11. I'd pay to go back to those for the database (it works on new Windows... but like anything in a command prompt, it's jank at best to try and get "full screen" that they removed after XP) and just have a handful of old ThinkPads running openSUSE for them to use for web browsing/email/etc.
Nice, finally a full pack of Windows 98 Updates, since XP and 7 already had those. "And Finish... For another reboot!" I don't know why but I chuckled when you said that xD I'm curious about that "9.0C UPDATES" thingy, make that could be a small fix to those weird issues with some DX9 Games on 98, like for e.g. Call of Duty randomly freezes the whole system for actual good reason, with (Supposedly) ATI Graphic Cards.
If I remember maybe I will track down a copy of Call of Duty. Don't currently have one but I am running an ATI card and would be interested in seeing if I get the same results. I also have some Nvidia FX cards I could swap in and try. What I love about DX9 on 98 is that you can use Nglide and you don't have to pay a gallon of blood and a pound of flesh for a 3DFX card.
@AxiomofDiscord Sure, I hope that will be enough, because I kinda was afraid to apply that ATI HotFix for this game, since I felt like it was a bit intimidating, felt like installing a different ATI Driver.
I get an invalid VxD error after the third reboot of the update-tool and win98 won't boot anymore. There was several confirmations about keeping newer files that i accepted with yes. My own experience is that 9 is better to have than 7, though admittedly most of my 3D Windows gaming experience is from the early 2000s onward, so is 7 simply better for compatibility with anything made with DX7 or earlier, or is there more to it than that?
Better for compatibility with DX5, 6 and 7 games. But it's not a big issue. Most games will work just fine but 7 will just work if you let's say have a Voodoo card and play suitable games.
previous DX versions are included, so there is no advantage. maybe an obscure game performs a little worse, but that is a big maybe and has not been demonstrated.
@@sakitoshi That's not entirely correct, but close. I've done some looking up on this since commenting to see if I could find out the specifics: DX8 includes DX7 while DX9 includes DX8 and DX7. However, what gets complicated here is that if you have DX9 installed then DX6 games will actually run in DX8 mode while DX5 or earlier will run in DX7 mode, meaning there may be some highly specific cases where having an install of DX7 will be better for DX6 games specifically, but otherwise going between DX7 and DX9 shouldn't make a difference.

I see many enthusiastic comments about this video but I wonder, what's the point of updating all those things? We are using windows 98 for retrogaming, why update internet explorer, media player and make windows heavier to run? Definitely some benchmarks before and after apply the updates would have been more interesting than see: next, next, reboot, next, next next, reboot
DirectX9 handels textures and lightning diffently in games than DX 6,7,8 eg you might find overstaurated or overbright maps in you favorite games or like me in my maps i did to unral tournament -some stuff like transparent textures settings even might be corrupted
@ardwivedi16 i meant the modren machine doing the downloading... and considering how destructive some of the back in the day 9x viruses where and how much more advanced programming has become I'd for one wouldn't want to imagine what they could do now.
So where is my 98 SE PC..? It might be in this room, I've moved.. Found it, it's under the box of LP's. It has a MSI KT3 Ultra and a Riva TNT 16MB. Not sure about the CPU. Hopefully I got a GPU with a DVI that fit in there, so I can get the picture too. Now got to go sleep.
This new compilation disk looks amazing. I will definitely try it out on another retro PC I am putting together. Nice to see these new projects and thank you for sharing them. What era is this build recommended for? Early XP I suspect?
Is it the latest virtualbox. For 98 I have found that earlier versions work better and really that is a shame. I think that is why I have been moving away from virtualization and towards full emulation with 98.
If you’re able to track down the “iWare mouse” driver, it’s what many mice manufacturers offered as a more customizable update package than the supplementary Microsoft software you featured for that scroll wheel functionality. Without it, Windows 9X offers only reduced functionality - meaning programs had to be developed to interpret the inputs since it wasn’t utilized by the system itself.
Will have to check this out when I setup my t5700 again. Really keen to see if those files from the Windows XP disk for networking make many changes to the network stack. The built in stuff for 98 is a bit lacking compared to ME or 2000.
FYI, I do get a virus alert from Avast for a Trojan from that download, which then gets blocked. There were 3 files flagged, two for Internet Explorer and another bat file. Probably false, and not important for a W98 setup not using the internet. Still, wanted to let you know that my scans showed some concerns. Kinda surprised this doesn't mention microsoft plus!. unless that just didn't add much under the hood on 98. I think it didd at least add high color icons and font smoothing. Otherwise yeah this looks like a neat option for just a fully up to date install as far as official microsoft components goes. I think it'd be neat if someone tried like, custom building Wine DLLs and things for windows 98/retro PCs to see just how much modern APIs can be supported. I don't suspect anything all that much further for direct3d, but other things maybe.

I will have to try this one and good to know about the few other things included with this CD.
It will be really useful.
I assume with everything internet archive has been though this ISO has been checked to make sure its not... "A TRAP!"
I wonder what they gonna do with infecting a windows 98 pc 🤣🤣
@ardwivedi16 i meant the modren machine doing the downloading... and considering how destructive some of the back in the day 9x viruses where and how much more advanced programming has become I'd for one wouldn't want to imagine what they could do now.
@@JohnSmith-xq1pz i investigated myself and found no issue
Nice video, although personally I prefer the vanilla Windows 98 SE (and, at least for gaming, you shouldn't need any patch).
Yes!!
Cool!
This new compilation disk looks amazing. I will definitely try it out on another retro PC I am putting together. Nice to see these new projects and thank you for sharing them.
What era is this build recommended for? Early XP I suspect?
Late 98 it does best. For XP it can quickly run out of steam...
Holy OldSchuleCrap! Just what I(n' Socket 7 needs) 🙂
EDIT: NO XP onna' 400MHz K6-III AHX! (call me OLDer)
Win98 love yeah !
This update broke my virtualbox windows98 thank you...
You took an image as recommended?
@@philscomputerlab no, lol, virtualbox was buggy anyways
Is it the latest virtualbox. For 98 I have found that earlier versions work better and really that is a shame. I think that is why I have been moving away from virtualization and towards full emulation with 98.
@@AxiomofDiscord Yeah but 86Box still strong.
How “clean” is this compared to the Windows Me update pack? It requires less interactions?
No idea, haven't used that 😂
Отличные новости! Благодарю!
For the Intellipoint software, you were supposed to put in the “wheel mouse” so that you may use the scroll wheel
Makes sense 😃
If you’re able to track down the “iWare mouse” driver, it’s what many mice manufacturers offered as a more customizable update package than the supplementary Microsoft software you featured for that scroll wheel functionality. Without it, Windows 9X offers only reduced functionality - meaning programs had to be developed to interpret the inputs since it wasn’t utilized by the system itself.
Want to make your updates interesting? Every time you need a reboot, take a shot!
I wonder how this compares to windows update restored website.
Will have to check this out when I setup my t5700 again. Really keen to see if those files from the Windows XP disk for networking make many changes to the network stack. The built in stuff for 98 is a bit lacking compared to ME or 2000.
@@56kflyingtoaster You get UPnP for example
FYI, I do get a virus alert from Avast for a Trojan from that download, which then gets blocked. There were 3 files flagged, two for Internet Explorer and another bat file. Probably false, and not important for a W98 setup not using the internet. Still, wanted to let you know that my scans showed some concerns.
Edit: It seemed to be disabled at about 1300hrs, 11/8/24 due to "issues with the item's contents".
Can you tell me exactly which files were flagged and as what exactly so i can have a look at it?
@@CHA0SHACKER Here is what Avast is flagging:
-Components\Internet Explorer\5.5 SP2 Updates\Install.bat as a BV:ExitWindows-M Trojan
-Components\Internet Explorer\6.0 SP1\Install.bat as the same Trojan
-Updates\INSTALL.BAT as the same Trojan
I cannot upload a screen shot so sorry I had to type it out.
Seems my post was taken down. Did you get the list before it vanished?
@@erikmerchant567 sadly no. Some of my other comments vanished as well. Really weird today
@@CHA0SHACKER Both Internet Explorer install dot bat files (5.5 sp2 and 6.0 sp1) and the main INSTALL dot BAT file . I'll try without making looking like an executable.
These kind of projects are awesome, unfortunately they are usually English language only. Patches for other languages are much more rare so I usually only install the vanilla Windows 98SE, and then any language specific update that may be needed by a specific program and/or game.
I really hope that someone does the same for Windows 95.
I'm curious as to why use 95 over 98?
@@philscomputerlab I find that I have fewer problems with memory in some games under DOS with a similar autoexec+config setup. So I have it on my Pentium II 350 PC.
Windows 98SE runs on 3 of my other old/retro PC (though only currently installed to the AT mini tower SS7 build), and I want each PC to be a different experience.
For example I run Windows ME on my Via C3 Nehemiah+SiS 315+Audio PCI 5200 PC. I have (far better) PIII, spare SB Live! and better AGP cards...but then it would just be a slow version of my Athlon XP 3000+ PC.
@dabombinablemi6188 That's interesting! Do you see more conventional memory or something like that?
@@philscomputerlab Yes. For example I can run my old share-ware copy of Blake Stone (1.0) under both Windows and DOS, even with CD and mouse drivers loaded. Under Windows 98 I can only run it in DOS mode if I don't load drivers.
I use the unofficial service pack 3 but selectively. If you install everything it can make your system chug and give compatibility issue. I do like it for some things. Windows ME theme and so on. Interested to try this one. Cheers from a mine site up north
Hey Phil, do this set of updates also update original explorer application in 98 like nusb does? I am asking since I do not like original set of icons from 98 being replaced with NT ones.
Sounds good will have to try it. I notice your mini 4k screen is gone. Did you find it too small in the end?
Nope, the videos are just produced weeks ago, so the lab upgrades didn't happen yet. I still use it 😊
Seems convenient.
Hi Phil. Is CUDA core are important in WinXP/DirectX 9 gaming?! I am A bit confuse to choose between GT710 v GT730 both are GDDR5. 710 had higher clock but 730 had more CUDA core. Thank you.
@@choirulabidin9890 Yes if course. Best to have benchmarks of the exact cards as there are differences with memory types, bandwidth... Likely a 730 with GDDR5 would be a good choice. Avoid DDR3
There are iirc two updates related to Plus! 98 in this package. They just get skipped if Plus isn’t installed.
There is some good stuff in Plus! 98. The Zip folder extension for example
Reboot Simulator 98
Hey Phil, this works also with the German Windows 98se or only English?
Kind regards
If you try to install it, it will work but you will end up with a half german half english version on win98
@@atiatyagamer8050thank you
@@Agoz8375 nope, just the English one, updates are language specific
Nice
Another amazing vídeo! Thanks Phill
O would like a tutorial, If possible, on How to clone a Windows 98 system... Tried with clonezilla and hdclone, but when I put It tô my retro computer It dosen't work...
I use to copy the instillation files to my computer after setup from CD, then just changed to installation path in the registry (for when it needs files to NOT ask me the location). By the way, I know XP's version of Outlook Express can still be used to connect to G-mail (and it is so fast), I wonder if it is the same with Windows 98
I wonder how this compares to AutoPatcher 2008 which I have my own unofficial modified version off on the archiving website.
So far that one is fully automatic while this one isn't but I don't know which one is newer in the end.
@@Henk717 mine is definitely newer as i build it due to having issues with the auto-patcher. I just suck at batch scripting. This update script is about the best i could manage with my limited knowledge
@@CHA0SHACKER Which updates does it have that autopatcher doesn't?
@@Henk717 i don’t think i have more updates than the auto-patcher. Since there haven’t been new updates since 2007 for Windows 98 SE. The last auto-patcher version is from 2008.
So it should be the same updates effectively + the extra third party stuff that the auto-patcher implements if you are into this sort of thing
Not sure, haven't used that one yet...
@@CHA0SHACKERHey great work putting this together. I remember you messaged me, but I just couldn't find what platform and that message 😢
Good 😮😮😮
Have you ever made a guide on how to back up and restore and image on old systems like this?
Not yet. I like to use removable media, so a USB card reader or USB SATA Adapter do the trick.
Hi, Phil! Does Windows 98 SE Automatic Updates CD work with multilanguage support, non english support & Plus! 98 ?
English only...
Hi. Wil defenetly try this.
I tried to download the Windows uppdated from your siste, but my Windows defender says there is a wirus, and wont let me download it 🤔 i was using a Windows 11 laptop.
windows themes is compatible with Revolution Pack?
Is IE6 on the CD? Strange it did not default to installing that instead of IE 5.5
It is. It's just not installed by default due to it causing issues with Windows 98 SE. Same with DirectX. Choose the one you like
Whatever disk imaging i'm using... I really don't have anything that old, any suggestions? Old Norton Ghost perhaps?
Plug the drive into a modern PC and image it there.
awesome, but how does one take an image of a 98 hard drive?
What is the significance of installing IE 5.5 instead of 6.0 on Windows 98? Is there something in IE 6.0 that isn't good for a Retro PC?
Can I use this on an existing installation that has some updates installed via Windows Update Restored? Or is it better to use this on a fresh installation?
For some reason I can't download this Windows 98 UPdate ISO, my Anti-Virus keeps telling me that it's got a Trojan program so it immediately stops the download.😟☹
Update: I finally was able to download it from my Linux machine and just copied it to my Windows PC. Not sure why my Win10 pc's Avast anti-virus is treating it as a virus so it stops me from downloading it. 🤔
I would prefer a German version, there are also very good inofficial patches out there.
Great video! I need it just now. Awesome !!
Hey Phil, I have a question. How demanding was Thief 1 back in the day? I'm using a Radeon 7500 PCI and a Pentium 3 600MHz and it still runs slow no matter the resolution, like sub30 fps.
@@nerdyneedsalife8315 I haven't played that game back in the day, but your CPU should be fine. Maybe it's the graphics card, but unless you have parts to swap and test, hard to say...
@philscomputerlab Okie dokie, thanks Phil, I thought that the 7500 would be a good card because it came later than the game and it's iust a 7200 with a smaller die. I wonder if I need something more era appropriate like a different ATI card or an Nvidia. I can't afford a Voodoo
@nerdyneedsalife8315 How do other games run? What year did Thief come out?
@@philscomputerlab Thief released in 1998. I will try some other games tonight but for games like Duke3D they ran fine which isn't surprising. I can maybe try Quake 2 and see if it's just Thief's engine being a demanding engine

I should have counted the rebootss. That was a lot.
