Unless they have to pay their cameraman Alex extra to speak on video in addition to filming it, I don't understand why even a few seconds wasn't devoted to hearing of his experience in the roof top tent -- or even show it. They took three overnight accommodations with them but described only two.

Mid $30's sounds like a lot and obviously that's yet to be confirmed. That said when you consider the kitchen setup, lights, bed, storage, etc that saves you space in your rig and allows you to fit more people in the rig its more family/multiple people friendly. Also, the competitive options (patriot, turtle back, etc) are going to be in that ballpark also. I would more or less travel solo so that may not be needed for me but a family, couple, friend group might really appreciate the space. At the end of the day you get what your situation calls for. Glad to see a rugged tear drop setup.

You guys did a great job of showing three different camping options. But they all looked awful to me lol. If you want to camp in the boonies a good tent is still the way to go. You can have space and headroom. Modern tents have gotten very easy to set up. And if you are "outlanding" you might as well not have to climb ladders, crawl through portholes or across tailgates. Since you came all that way to enjoy the environment then pitch your tent out in it. Having a new home with a front door you can walk through will leave you more connected than crawling ladders to a tiny refuge.

A few months ago I saw a nice tiny camper, MeerKat Trailer, being pulled behind a Jeep GC and I googled the company to see what they cost for a little weekend rig... and it was like $25k for the base model.
Patriot campers are all like $33k+..
Since overlanding is popular these days, companies are charging “overlanding tax” on these type of items.

@@ShredGarage that’s insane! People sure do spend a ton of money on this stuff. All I’ve ever done is tent camping and I’ve done a lot of it. Mostly off a motorcycle, some from my Cherokee TH. So I guess I just don’t know what I’m missing but I’m perfectly happy with a tent.

    • @ShredGarage

@@JonBecker81 I’ve always ground camped in a tent as well. There’s perks to not ground camp, but for the cost I’m sticking with my $100 Costco special Coleman tent. Haha.
Not to sound like the old guy, cause I’m not, but I remember when having like a Coleman little stove top was “glamping” and looked down on for not enjoying nature. Now days it seems like a lot of people want to bring every last piece of gear with them to make it not seem like nature, weird to me. Especially most of the people using these things are only going for 1-3 days and not like they’re needing to live off the grid for 1-2+ weeks. Power stations, blenders, freezers for ice cream, running water.. like I get it makes it “easier” but to me seems like it takes away the goal of being outdoors.

I know some of these trailers are "rugged" but, even so, I think I'd just tow one as far as a "base camp" and then unhitch it and leave it before I did any serious off-roading.
Main benefit of a trailer (IMO), and it's a big one, is that you can unhitch it and leave all your stuff behind rather than having to pack it all up and carry it with you... as long as you end up back at a "base camp", of course.

I hauled an off road trailer with my Rubicon. It has a lot of convenience and comfort. The down side is that when you are spending a lot of time off road it significantly slow you down. We sold our trailer and bought a Gazelle tent to make our off road exploration more enjoyable.

Personally if I was gonna spend in the 30k's for an off road camper I'd rather get a four wheel pop up camper which I'm sure they'll have one that fits the Jeep truck because then you actually get a heater and probably some more storage and can stand up inside of it plus you're not hauling around a trailer, it also doesn't require tires and you don't have to license it or pay for plates and registration like a trailer Just seems a lot better to me. If you're gonna get a trailer it should come with something that's more useful.

    • @jonmccauley6490

Love my popup. Has ac, heat, kitchen, beds for 6, etc. And I could tow it where they were easy. Over landing is not rock crawling. No need to rock crawl a popup or a specialized $35k camper. It just doesnt happen often enough.

  • @sprk11

I agree with Case in that if it's a quick over nighter then a small canopy or roof top, but for longer trips or a base camp type outing then the trailer is the way to go. But then if you're running a wrangler JK where flopping out in the back isn't an option then you're back to some form of trailering you camp. Watching for more of your vids guys keep them coming.

My first impression of that trailer is that the axle attachment points look to be very vulnerable to being snagged/damaged when offroading. At very least there would needs to be something welded to the frame ahead of that low hanging attachment point to provide a smooth transition for dragging it over obstacles.

Nice video; the Bean is extremely cool. I have a Mean Bean on order that will be ready later this year. Being local I was able to see the whole manufacturing facility front to back and look at the trailers and options available. The sales staff (Richard) was so personable and easy to talk to. For us the Bean made perfect sense. It’s small enough and off road enough I can get anywhere I want to in Utah. It’s minimalist and low maintenance compared to a big RV. I can park it in my garage. I can have it loaded ready for a weekend adventure with ease. The build quality is unmatched. All spec’d out ours will be about $29k. You can go completely bonkers with the options and get deep into the 30’s but most people will realize at around 30k you’ll have pretty much everything you want. It seems expensive but the value is there when you realize you are buying something that can literally last a lifetime. Try and find a used one for sale - there aren’t any and if you can find one it’s selling at near retail prices. I can’t wait to make a ton of content with mine once I get it.

    Someone has been watching Trailrecon.
My last trip on the Nor Cal coast I rented a Nucamp Boondock teardrop that had an inside kitchen plus bathroom for a lower price that what this is. Kids slept in the back of the Jeep. Wife and I in the slept in the trailer. These style trailers for what you get is overpriced a long ways. That Boondock runs around 20k and will do 90% of what the 40k trailers does with a wet bath, AC, Heater, and indoor kitchen.

For that price you could just buy a Tundra with 4wd, or if you don't care about a powerful engine you can get a different fullsize for around that price. It's 5.5' wide on the rear seat, so you can just fold up the rear seat and sleep on there. Or if the 4.5' of seat width in the gladiator is fine sleep there curled up in a ball.

At the price of the Gladiator and trailer rather have a Ford Quigley Van at say 25-50k with sleeping arrangements inside towing an 8k baby yota for the tougher trailers, or a 2 door rubicon. Reward/use of the trailer isn't worth the cost. The new mercedes 4x4 sprinters might cost less even with a trailer and sXs attached.

Really? Bean is pretty incredible off road. th-cam.com/video/nMQC-DojXCo/w-d-xo.html How is it better off road when the geometry is similar and the same axle? Is it because it has 20" of ground clearance? MeanerBean has 17" of ground clearance and that lifted Rubicon has less than that that. Does a trailer need more ground clearance than the vehicle to make it better off road?
