  • After more than 30 years of service as one of the Navy's top aviators, Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. Training a detachment of graduates for a special assignment, Maverick must confront the ghosts of his past and his deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who choose to fly it.

It made $1 billion dollars at the box office!!
I grew up watching the original film on VHS when I was 4-5 years old!
Its also my dad's favorite movie.
Top Gun made $360 million dollars ($798-800 million dollars today) against a $15 million dollar budget.
It took home the Oscar for Best Original Song, Take My Breath Away.

@@filmcomicsexplained I somewhat disagree with your a little typical points about "oh subplots oh characters" I think this is very stereotypical approach to movie analysis that's just based around mentioning a buzzword. A movie is bad or good if it emotionally hits. Subplots do not matter. In fact subplots probably are a distraction and should be treated very carefully. "Characters" as a buzzword do not matter. The plot matters, the structure of the film matters. A film is a story. If that story is structurally sound and has correct structure (like a hero's journey we see in Rocky or a "crime and repentance" type story we see in original Top Gun) the film will succeed. Furthermore, there are no rules. There are movies that are purely successful because they did one or two things extremely great that have nothing to do with writing or other aspects of high brow movie making. Mortal Kombat is a great movie due to a great soundtrack, editing and script that knew what the movie was and didn't overload it with unnecessary dialogue, and powerful emotional characters that were unique and different. It doesn't matter that mortal kombat was low brow, and it doesn't matter that honestly mortal kombat's 2nd act and a lot of the movie were pure fodder and did not need to be there at all. This is where top gun 2 sits. it does a few things extremely well, and does the rest poorly or averagely. The plot to the top gun is kind of lacking. But it doesn't matter that the plot is kind of lacking, because the movie is so overloaded with extremely powerful moments that the plot is made irrelevant. A worse movie would've not had those moments, and we would've been subject to a very average plotline. But the powerful moment of maverick almost ending himself in the first 10 minutes because he has some kind of suicide wish and feels regret over goose. Powerful moments of Rooster/Maverick plotline and how both feel sadness over Goose who was lost. Powerful moment of Maverick almost dying a second time to protect Rooster. Powerful moment of Maverick apologizing to his dead friend for failing to protect Rooster when he's run out of ammunition in the last part of the film. If those moments were weaker, or did not exist, we would see the plot for what it was, which was a very average movie, in my opinion. Jon Hamm was not bad as the terse instructor, but he was a bit bad. If all the movie had was Hamm and Cruise they would not be able to carry the movie. Frankly maybe Cruise can't carry the movie all too well, he doesn't emote so well.
TL;DR read less "movie critic" glossaries and stop using buzzwords and actually think about which movies you actually like and actually don't like. Unless you have one "guilty pleasure" (which are not a guilty pleasure actually, if its a pleasure it cannot be guilty) film like Mortal Kombat that you are willing to admit that you like and everybody else in society is wrong on don't think you've reached the point of movie criticism where you understand movies and how they work. If I have to hear another stupid movie critic talk about "plot holes" and how they "totally ruined the movie for him" I'm going to strangle somebody. Plot holes don't ruin movies, neither do subplots. Is it a good movie or not. Easy question.

    • @phillip8596
      @phillip8596 ปีที่แล้ว

@@filmcomicsexplained Also no offense but top gun 1 and top gun 2 are not the same structurally at all (there are some similarities, there's a mission at the end, climax at the end, and lots of preparation beforehand) and are not the same movies. Top gun 1 was a story of "crime and atonement". first half TC kills goose, but in second half he makes up for it and settles his disagreement with iceman his local conflict. Top Gun 2 was very much a story of regret, remorse, atoning for past mistakes, somberness. There was no story of innocence at the start of the film, tom cruise already walked into a movie a made man, at the top of his game.
The movie critic community really needs to start stepping their game up, most of them do not understand movies and how movies work. They look at "oh look mission at end of movie = mission at end of movie in first movie ... wow must be same must be same" cmon guys, let's think more structurally about what the structure of the movie is.
Some people say: if a critic understood movies, he'd be called a screenwriter. Sometimes might make sense if you think about it. Movie criticism is very hard, as is all art criticism. Merely having an opinion you completely didnt think about and pulled out of your rear is not sufficient qualification for knowing what you are talking about. Art is about emotional analysis. It's very very difficult. Stories like hamlet, while also probably being overrated, are legitimately loved because of the degree of complexity of emotions the characters go through.

Even the enemy planes and turret guns and the older guy saving the new kid. Same plot point of getting a bomb or projectile to go into a hole that is 2-3 meters wide. While going through a small canyon like gap with walls on either side. I’m sorry but you can do side by side and Maverick just added more detail since this was the only thing going on.
Maverick had to go back and save the kid or the other guy he didn’t like in the beginning saving him on the last minute.

Maverick's wingman was Phoenix and Bob in Dagger 2
Rooster was Dagger 3 with Payback and Fanboy in Dagger 4.

Thanks for explaining Maverick . Seriously, what happened to the days where you can just watch and enjoy a movie with out dissecting and analzying the shit out of it.

Great review. I enjoyed the interactions with Penny a bit more than you did, but overall I agree with most of your points. I believe I liked Penny because I liked Maverick the character much more in this sequel than I did in 1986 when he was walking into womens' bathrooms. The story brought me to a point where I actually wanted the character to be happy. The visuals and sound were of course stunning, and the action pulse pounding in a way I've never experienced at a movie. That goes without saying, but I do agree that another scene or two with the newer pilots would have been improved the movie as a whole. However, Maverick and Rooster's story was so emotionally engaging that I can't complain. Kudos to the writers and to Cruise and Teller. You just wanted the characters to reconcile so much. You sensed their peace at the end with Rooster in the hangar, and his picture with Maverick on the sacred "Goose wall." Add in the eloquent inclusion of Kilmer showing the character's growth and this movie packs a much bigger punch than the original. In my opinion, of course.

FYI, Lady Gaga was also integral in helping create the score. It’s important you acknowledge her contributions in that regard as it’s rare for a woman to help score such a massive action movie.

Tom Cruise is the last true movie star, he'd do whatever it takes to make a film feel as real as possible. Can't wait for what's coming with Mission Impossible 7 and 8.

LOVED this movie!, but I do feel bad for the actress who played his original love interest, tho. They didn't even approach her about the sequel &dropped her character all together since she looks "too old". That being said Connely was a good choice.
