They cut a ton of Anton's dialogue from the novel, which was a good decision. He's way too talkative in the novel, explains too much. He's much scarier when he's more silent and, when he does speak, obtuse.

Ethan Coen famously said answered a question one time someone asked “How did you adapt the book so well?” And Ethan goes “Well we’d take turns. One of us would stand there and read the book aloud and the other one would type it into the computer.” Lol

A fellow fan of McCarthy, fun fact, the novel was originally written as a screen play, it got rejected, nobody wanted it, so he turned it into a novel. Which then, of course, was turned into a screenplay.

The other great bet is Brad Pitt. I'm not attracted to men, he just makes great choices (except for World War Z, also; too many sequels always suck). Even "Seven Years in Tibet", which is definitely not for everyone, was a good film.
I worked with a guy who dismissed Pitt as "a pretty boy" but I started telling him what I wrote here. I had not watched "Thelma and Louise" but mentioned that he got good reviews and suddenly the guys said, "Oh, I liked him in that Movie.". What was brilliant about that scene was that for a split second he got to Chigur. When he said, “do you have any idea how crazy you are?” Anton stopped to think, and had the phone not rang giving him the sound to cover the shot, Carson might have talked his way further along. Probably not out of it, but maybe…

It mostly just amused Chigurh, I think. In the book, Anton says that while he doesn't believe in God, he patterns himself after Him. I doubt Carson's jab made him doubt himself very much. Carson's fate was sealed because he knew full-well what he was doing when he took on the job, whereas others were caught-up in something they didn't have much say in. The only chance Carson had was a desperate lunge for Chigurh's gun; which, in the book, he says that even if he were 20 years younger, would probably be futile.

I remember an interview where he talked about his shock at how much some directors film, because he doesnt shoot extra 'coverage' ie B Roll for editing. He shoots exactly what he wants and thats it. I feel like a lot of people like Woody Harrelson… But I still feel as if he maybe doesn’t get all of the appreciation he should. He has had some real stand out roles that really make you feel things. He really played this character well.
Another character I feel like I seldomly hear him praised for is the antagonist he played opposite of Christian Bale in Out of the Furnace. That whole story line, and his performance along with Christian and Casey Affleck’s really made me feel a range of emotions. Just an impeccable movie.

Actors are ao dumb, because 1 or 2 directors have a process where they do 50 takes and lets them improvise a little they think its okay to rewrite stuff themselves. Not that they've actually read the book or done any research or consulted anyone. Damn incredible. Imagine any other artist or worker doing that. "Yes I know you said a self portrait of your wife, but I felt like she has the soul of a cat so I drew it that way".
