  • A Practical Example of an Advantage of Software Freedom to non-Programmers
Free/Libre software is software that respects the user's freedom. Software that meets the "4 Freedoms" is considered free/libre. The free software movement was started by Richard Stallman to to pursue the liberation of cyberspace. To create a free digital world for computers users.
Richard Stallman started the GNU project to develop an operating system for this, and pioneered the concept of copyleft with their GNU GPL license. Copyleft is a specific kind of a free/libre license that guarantees the user's freedom is preserved when the software exchanges hands.
if you are not a programmer, then of what use is software freedom to you? Well this is an example

Also I didn't even mention the Unity desktop environment which is also a fork of GNOME 3

I forgot about it since it used to be the default in Ubuntu but then not anymore and then fell to obscurity, until very recently.
      I've nver used it.

I like the way you think. Consider writing a script/transcript next time, and reading off of that. You will get your points across more clearly and quickly, and you will have to do less editing, as well!

You want the product of the software developers labor without having to pay the software developer. You want them to do work for you without you having to pay them. This is the mindset of the slaveholder. That is the philosophical background of what you're talking about.

Comparing FOSS to slavery is disgusting, dont ever compare people working on things wilingly to people working against their will. Slaves are disposed of when they dont meet expectations, programmers just rude comments.

@@deadheadcynicallydepressed7360 slavery doesn't begin when people are "disposed of". It begins AND IS ALREADY WRONG long before the slave is disposed of. Demanding that other people work for free without being compensated for their work is how slavery starts and it's already wrong at that point, WAY before it's inevitable outcome. Don't wait to fight slavery until the whips come out. Be a little proactive.

@@awuuwa right, you want others to pay for it.

@@TreeLuvBurdpu It would be slavery if I forced someone to make a software for me against their will. But me using existing software that someone made independent of my influence is not slavery.
If someone doesn't want to make software unless paid, then if not paid, just don't make the software. Most libre software is made by volunteers however. Which means the creators of the software consent to the act of creation of that piece of software, and to people's use of it without any restrictions placed on the use of it.
So to you a volunteer who wants to contribute to a libre software project is a slave, because a user of the software didn't pay them?
