One minor detail: when Marth uses his Final Smash, you hear a faint sound, this is the sound of a critical hit from Fire Emblems 6, 7 and 8. Funny considering number 6 was the one with Roy in it xD.
You could also say that Marth's "tipper" mechanic is a reference to how he consistently attacks using only the tip of his blade, often keeping his distance from his opponents.
at the end of the day, it almost leaves you to wonder how much of this freakishly extensive homework Sakurai did with not just one character, but ALL of them I don't know about anyone here, but I'd get very tired of doing it eventually... doing that for one fighter would have been enough for me..
In 22:18, Marth doesn't say "みんな、見てくれ!(Minna, mite kure!)"; instead, He says "みんな、見ていてくれ!(Minna, mite ite kure!)", meaning "Everyone, please watch over me!". "mite" and "mite ite" both mean similar but different in a nuance. I can think of two different things he wants to say. First, he wants to show his bravery to his army, and be a good model for them. Marth's men are actually watching him fight in this theory. Or, more possibly, he imagines his fellows in his heart and makes it his emotional support. They don't have to be there to say the words, you can even say "mite ite kure" to a man already dead! I am positive because I am Japanese :D
Would just like to point out that all of Marth's attacks deal more damage in Brawl if only the edge connects; I remember seeing it on the dojo :D Would just like to add that this video was very fun to watch, also had a small laugh watching Marth casually avoid all the F-Zero cars while Pit got annihilated
These move videos would work better as television programs then most game based television programs around now a days. Really in dept with great video demonstration
Did anyone know in Brawl and in Sm4sh, You can stop Lucina's and Marth's FS just by pressing the special move button? this is good for hitting people who try to dodge Lucina's or Marth's Final Smash.
The green dancing sword (when you tilt down when using dancing sword) is kinda like Astra because 1.its green 2. It attacks 5 times. So in the sense, it would be like brave sword and then Astra activated on the last hit.
One small correction. Though the green jewel on the end of the Falchion may not have been in the sword's design in the original game Fire Emblem Ankoku Ryu to Hikari no Tsurugi, it however was in the third installment, Fire Emblem Monsho no Nazo. This might still have been in reference to the point he made, however it wasn't newly added in Smash Bros.
It also is in the Falchion's original design. There's art from the first game where Marth has his left hand on his hip and has Falchion lifted in his right, you can see the green pommel gem. Also it's on the title screen of Fire Emblem 1, it's just colored white for some reason, maybe palette limitations?
I just noticed, the critcal FS that Marth has does 60% damage, which is also the max hp for playable characters in FE6/7/8/9/11/12 and as you said, criticals are pretty much a guarantee of killing. Ehm, Besides that, good job!
His non-critical with the rapier in FE1 is exactly the same animation as his F-tilt. He even uses it out of a walk, which is the most "natural" way to input it.
@jamduke He's in Training mode, which doesn't have any move decay. You can tell if you watch the part where he spams Dolphin Slash on Pit for an entire stock, doing the exact same damage each time (13%, except that one random I'm guessing non-tippered one in the air).
As a new fan of fire emblem, I like how They manage to work having only 5 games where Marth only appeared in 2 (and it would have been interesting if he had been in 64 as Sakurai had planned)
@DedicatedSpecialist There're no Brave/Hero weapons in Fire Emblem Gaiden. These weapons weren't introduced until Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu. Although there's a Hero Sword in Fire Emblem Gaiden, it didn't behave like how Brave/Hero weapons do in later games.
Watching this, I think it's remarkable how much intensive thought is put into the movements of each character in Smash Bros. It's like they bring in a panel of experts on every single series to act as designers.
The sound made by Marth hitting the opponent with Critical Hit is similar to Fire Emblem: Blazing Sword's cirtical noise as well. Might be a related reference there too (Not the same universe but general reference)
No, it requires you to get hit, and deals only half the damage to your attacker. Marth's Down B and how it's more powerful depending on how powerful the enemy's attack is must be a basic, subtle reasoning that "The more powerful the attack that your dodging and counterattacking against, the higher your own stats are in comparison!" If that makes any sense.
Luna (nullifies defense and resistance, similar in effect to the Shield Breaker), Aegis (Halves damage done by projectiles, similar to how the counter in Smash can block projectiles instead of just physical attacks) and Rightful King, that allows him to activate this abilities more often, maybe referencing how you can do them freely in Smash? maybe I'm looking too much into it, but I truly believe there is at least some truth in this
As someone who got associated with Fire Emblem through Super Smash Bros., I will agree with you on one thing: Marth really has no connection with the continent of Tellius. But in FE Awakening, the game that takes place 1,000 years after Mystery of the Emblem, for some reason Ike’s sword, Ragnell, was seen with Priam, a random guy whom Intelligent Systems made the descendant of the Radiant Hero. In all honesty, I did not know if they were referring to Ike, and I still don’t. But…Owain’s dialogue in Fire Emblem Warriors’ History Mode map, Scion of Legend, may have something to say about that.
Even though it's slow paced, Fire Emblem games tend to be very tense because one screw up can really screw you over and you might have to restart (if you care about your units dying and never coming back) since the games are VERY strategic. So unless you're playing Awakening where EVERYONE is overpowered and there's no danger or strategy, the tensity of these games really refrain them from being boring, and instead end up being exciting.
I think they did. With a game like this, references to a game a character is in is the main focus. They could've easily made up some random ass sword swings or punches for the characters. And I doubt all this is pure coincidence.
Thought I'd throw something in that i actually only noticed while watching the video (thnx to all the slow-mos XP) when marth uses his final smash the falchion glows like when he attacks. All the sparkles come together to the sword and he executes the final smash. If you look at where he was you can see the blue sparkles in his wake =P
Apparently no one seems to know that the upward slash critical animation appeared in Genealogy of the Holy War before Thracia. Granted, it's much rarer to see in FE4 due to criticals working very differently in that game.
Couple of things you missed: Note how Marth moves on the map. Hunched over, with his cape sort of billowing behind him. Same as his Brawl running animation. As you mentioned, many FE characters attack by jumping into the air. This could explain why Marth is very powerful in the air.
Another video to add to the playlist, awesome work. Maybe you should ask some people to help you out with some of these so that making these videos wouldn't be such a lengthy process.
Watching this video shows me just how much work it toke for you to make those videos, which I realized long ago, but it won't hurt to make your videos feel faster paced. More so if you had a mic, as it's not so much because of laziness to not text, but it's harder to sit though this and show off to my friends.
I used to play fire emblem when I was a kid and I can read katakana a little bit. Marth name in romanji alphabet is ma-ru-su and I think his name is Mars a roman god of war but it just Marth.
I know it's quite a bit late, but if you hold down during Marth's Dancing Blades, he does an even faster flurry of attacks for his final strike. If I recall right, it's done five times at reduced damage, just like Meteor Strike/Astra.
I saw "King Marth"'s abilities in Fire Emblem Awakening and I can't help but to think they are related with Marth's Smash moves. A little background: in FE:A you can get characters from past games via DLC or Spotpass, I'm talking specifically about "King Marth" from Fire Emblem 12: New Mistery of the Emblem. He has Astra (mentioned in the video, hits up to 5 times, similar to the dancing blade), Sol (allows you to "recover" half the damage done)...
It's from an unofficial English translation. All anime means is that it lets you change the animation settings in the game, in other words if you don't want to see the fight scenes, you can turn them off.
Do you think Marth's taunt could mean something more like "Everyone, please look to me?" As something a commander would say? Anyways, great job, I love the Fire Emblem games and have never had a good chance to play much of the ones that havent been released here. This video was very informative, and yes, MILES better than your Melee Marth video (which I couldnt help but think of as all of the attack references came up, and how NONE of that was in the first vid Oo).
@rayden1212 He's doing them in order of the character select screen. He's still got two full rows to go before he gets to Sonic. Don't worry, he'll get there eventually.
missing critical hits hot damm we would love that to be added back it would have make the game a little bit too much frustrating but if you get lucky and the ennemy miss his critical hit and you dont thats when you shine
What's the issue with the Rapier segment? it makes sense, taking the "animation" from the Rapiers of games past, then giving it a sweet spot at the edge, and lots of shield damage.
Did you mention how the critical hit sound is similar to that "arrow shooting a target" sound you hear in some of the Fire Emblem games when one performs a critical hit?
When he says " everyone look at me" it isn't to be cocky nor is it because his a leader , it's said in many anime , he is simply say " this is for you, I am fighting for you " something more like that.
Could Marth's neutral A combo loop be influenced by his standard attack with normal swords (slash downwards) and special swords (slash upwards). The stance is different but the sword motion looks somewhat similar.
hey CCD... you were stating that Marth spun his sword and had the flashes that appeared on Falchion... when you look at the animation for the critical for the Falchion in Shadow Dragon and the sword of Light and SSBB, a small detail i noticed is that they were one in the same... didn't know if you caught that or not, but i figured that i'd point it out
About the "Everyone, please watch me" taunt in Japanese, I believe it's "みんな、見て'いて'くれ", which if translated directly to English, is "Everyone, please (keep) watching me", it might seem weird in English, but it's normal in Chinese(my native language), so I believe it's also normal in Japanese.

The only thing I miss is his costumes.. 'cause I don't know about his last one (the one with the lighter blue hair) if it's his melee outfit or that he looks like Ephraim of Fire Emblem Sacred Stones for the GBA..
Just press the D-pad/move the joy stick in any way (depending on what controller you use) when in the middle of the attack. It's very difficult though.
One minor detail: when Marth uses his Final Smash, you hear a faint sound, this is the sound of a critical hit from Fire Emblems 6, 7 and 8. Funny considering number 6 was the one with Roy in it xD.

well if that "homework" meant playing a bunch of FE games then i'd say he's got it made lol
@@joshuabrown7844 If you are having fun is considered a homework in my book.

***** nah neetrain is right, you can hear it clearly when he first shows it on this video
Josh is right, the taunt is more like a "I'm the main show" kind of taunt, sort of like bragging
DFcanaplayzXD that ain't what he say tho.
he talks fast but its miteitekure not mitekure
the tone of his voice clearly isn't showing off also. he's like a hesitant leader
矢田部雄山 おぉ、助かった。
For a guy who loves history, Fire Emblem and Smash games... this... is... beautiful... thanks you a lot.
Would just like to point out that all of Marth's attacks deal more damage in Brawl if only the edge connects; I remember seeing it on the dojo :D
Would just like to add that this video was very fun to watch, also had a small laugh watching Marth casually avoid all the F-Zero cars while Pit got annihilated

why the fuck was this reccomended to me after 9 years, this vid is great.
the way marth attacked in the famicom fire emblem with a rapier looked more like his f tilt instead of his side smash
Wow, I never would've caught the damage ratio of his B-move to his Final Smash. Great video, as always.
I'm assuming the old warp animation was not used because some may see it as a pentagram (it's not)
Great vid as always
I just noticed, the critcal FS that Marth has does 60% damage, which is also the max hp for playable characters in FE6/7/8/9/11/12

which I know is in Fire Emblem Awakening at least

4:09 The countdown goes with the music!
Silly Intelligent Systems reusing their "Metroid" bubble-door sound effect for warp spells.
08:31 - 08:41 Favorite part. Nice explcative video.Howewver, I'm not sure if Nintendo/HAl took all this considerations before making this moveset...

I'm now a Fire Emblem fan(boy), so I loved this video.
Also, minor nitpick: Skills reappeared in Sacred Stones, though the system was dumbed down.
This video was simply amazing. ♥ You're amazing.
You did a very very good job with this.♥ I learned so much.
Good eye noticing the green jewel on his sword, that's so cool and I didn't know it was there!
0.o I didn't think so many of those tiny details made it in to SSB! Good eye, man!

The more you know.
Gives you plenty of food for thought.
I always thought the tipped damage thing came from the fact that actual Falchions are swords that are larger at the tip than at the base.
And then Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon and The Blade of Light finally got localized for English speaking audiences!
Yayy
17:05 Ogma: Want to see me dodge this axe? Want to see me do it again?

Great Job, once again! Also, for some reason, I agree. You should keep the Melee Marth's Moves.

XD I thought the intro to marth was he was a chess piece that just appeared and came to life.
gameandwatch909 LMAO make sence cus in melee every character is an amiibo (sort of)
12:30 - That was because of stale moves actually..
Tipping only affects knockback.
Looking at some of the original pictures of the Falchion, it does have a green gem. In both the tcg and Mystery of the Emblem.
17:57 Wow I never noticed that! That also explains Lucina's odd fighting pose in Fire Emblem Awakening...
Wow this one is a lot longer and in depth than the Melee one. Good job.
1:25 Can someone explain the anime command in FE4? Please!
It's from an unofficial English translation. All anime means is that it lets you change the animation settings in the game, in other words if you don't want to see the fight scenes, you can turn them off.
Marth is my favorite Fire Emblem character.
6:18 That's got to be the creepiest video game music of the NES era
Do you think Marth's taunt could mean something more like "Everyone, please look to me?" As something a commander would say?

I really liked this video, great job!
@CrappyCaptureDevice wow.. I thought this channel was dead, thanks for everything LOVE YOUR CHANNEL
i love how pit is getting pwned in all the demonstrations... even the when marth isnt attacking xD 17:57
missing critical hits hot damm we would love that to be added back it would have make the game a little bit too much frustrating but if you get lucky and the ennemy miss his critical hit and you dont thats when you shine
Bet Ellis warped him!
Pretty obscure joke but still, N I C E
Wow you put a lot of effort on it, I've never played a FE game but now I do want lol Congratulations on your video =)

Could Marth's neutral A combo loop be influenced by his standard attack with normal swords (slash downwards) and special swords (slash upwards). The stance is different but the sword motion looks somewhat similar.
And don't forget about how his Dancing Blade move has that fun barrage of quick jabs at the end(if performed correctly.)
hey CCD... you were stating that Marth spun his sword and had the flashes that appeared on Falchion... when you look at the animation for the critical for the Falchion in Shadow Dragon and the sword of Light and SSBB, a small detail i noticed is that they were one in the same... didn't know if you caught that or not, but i figured that i'd point it out
Well, this is a homecoming.

Another possible origin for Shield Breaker is the Moonlight Sword or Luna skill from various Fire Emblem games. They both glow blue, after all.
0:00 why is there a guy doing orange justice?
You ruined my boi Xane.
I could have sworn there were more hits in the dancing blade combo? Like, 2 more I think...
I know. I just want the music now in that part.
@CrappyCaptureDevice Might as well keep it for "historical value." along with the rest of your Melee videos.
Man, this video was incredible. I've never played a single Fire Emblem game, so I didn't know any of this.
~The Qu
One quick question. Why did the Falchion change shape for Fire Emblem Awakening? Weird. Why didn't they keep the original design?
any idea why the upward slash thing is called the dolphin slash?
What about the end of Marth's dancing blade attack, where he finishes with five additional slashes? Is that a Super Smash Bros. original move? Otherwise great video, it just left me wondering about that.
@windwaker2234 If you mean FE11 (Shadow Dragon), its script was heavily more elaborated and became less laconic than FE1's script. It didn't just simply reuse the original script and call it a day.
@CrappyCaptureDevice Did you also know the critical hit sound when you land a hit on an enemy with final smash makes the sound of the one from Fire Emblem 7.
I always took Marth's down-taunt as him wanting to show everyone what he could do. The tone of it hardly sounds cocky.
I can't tell, what is the last Hiragana character at the end of his taunt? I know "Mi'nna, mi te ku" but I don't know the last one. O.O
this is really clever but you forgot to mention that the way marth runs when he has falchion equiped is similar to the way he runs in ssbb
The only thing I miss is his costumes.. 'cause I don't know about his last one (the one with the lighter blue hair) if it's his melee outfit or that he looks like Ephraim of Fire Emblem Sacred Stones for the GBA..
Awesome video!
Just read through the description. I think the taunt is supposed to be "Everyone. Follow me." seeing as how he would've led an army into battle.
Is there any way to play the nes fire emblem games in english?
Okay, someone please tell me which game is at 2:59. It has the best battle music I've ever heard.
OW! It does hurt to read the description
You might have forgotten move damage decay at 12:25.
never thought of dolphin slash that way
18:24 Marth just casually doesn't give a single fuck.
@CrappyCaptureDevice
What are your theories on WHY it's like that? Why does he do more damage at the tip? He should use more thrust attacks...
Just press the D-pad/move the joy stick in any way (depending on what controller you use) when in the middle of the attack. It's very difficult though.
