The Kmart was in the best buy portion of the building. A Little Cesars complete with a play area was in the office max portion. And office max was in the Big Lots portion.
When I was a kid, K-Mart was next to Chucky Cheese where Office Deport is. They had the full larger set of Chucky and friends in the back in the larger dinning area. They also had a larger maze under the stage. They also had a smaller dinning area up front with the arcades.
Lived in Okemos as a kid 1983 - 1986. I was in that K-Mart many times, although not nearly as many times as the Meijer across the street. There was a Chuck E Cheese where that Office Depot is now.
I remember Chucky E Cheese with the maze under the large main stage. K-Mart with their larger dinning area in the back middle of the store. Loved their mashed Potatoes and gravy.
I work at that Big Lots, it's a really nice store. There really isn't anything lingering in the back room from the Kmart days but you can see where some old floor tiles used to be in certain areas where its now just concrete floor. Big Lots does have Kmart vibes though and I fully understand why Kmart failed in that location. There is just too much competition across the road with Meijer and then you have Target and the mall right around the corner and also a Kroger. I'm not sure but I do believe that building might be owned by the same company that owns the Meridian Mall so the cost to lease it was probably too high for Kmart. If my memory is correct...I do believe this was also one of the few remaining stores that never received a remodel in the early 90's so it was still rocking a lot of the vintage signage. The old ceiling tiles on the outside remain over in the old Garden Shop though.
Suprised that wasn't an Super Kmart it is big enough maybe as big as the Sterling Heights Mi Kmart Super Center think Amazon uses it now as a shipping hub?
@@andrewps84 There's good money in that for sure Uhall is buying up any with an Auto Center think they bought the Dixie Highway Waterford Kmart last year. that used to have a real sit down restaurant with a waitress or waiter food wasn't bad either.
@@METALMAN4Wii that’s what I loved about Okemos…the cafeteria was da bomb, my dad would often get me some food from there and you could just chill for hours. They made everything fresh too…not just some prepackaged stuff, but legit made to order.
