    Thank you for the great inspiration to start NMM from another perspective! I did some cross-sketchting to achieve a similiar effect with greys, though introducing more shine and colours really boost the effect

    I agree with you, the references are important but is not strictly necessary look at real pics or real stuff.. even a good painted miniature is useful. I love use figures as reference.

      Agreed! Some painters insist to not “copy” another miniature, but to me it’s just another reference to get inspired!!

    There are for sure some tips here I have not heard anywhere else. I am looking forward to the challenge of trying nmm without aiming for smooth blends. I feel like I have had an instinct to leave them sort of rough sometimes and I keep thinking I'm being lazy--maybe not, huh? Thanks for your insights!

      In his recent cursed city skeleton video Richard Gray advises using a slightly beat up brush in order to make it easier to create varied natural brushstrokes in your nmm and I was planning to try my own CC skellies in his style--going to try your techniques on some of them too. Lyla Mev has a video where she paints a mini in Van Gogh's style, with broad wild impressionist markmaking in patterns. Sam Lenz's new videos on Sigvald NMM might be an interesting counterpoint to look into. He does his nmm in a very elegant and simple series of marks, and he says in the most recent video that every mark he makes is either a line or a dot, like it's all just a collection of similar tiny dots and lines, without too much line width variation. I'm probably going to paint my NMM in a big mix of all my fav painters' styles and it will probably look like muddy crap LOL

      eheh sometimes I feel lazy as well pal ahah. I think it's all about where you choose to leave that texture vs not cleaning a transition. I'm totally inspired by richard for this techniques, I think it's amazing! Tho I didn't hear about using a beat up brush to leave more texture, that's an useful tip thanks!!
      and i bet your nmm won't end up crappy as you imagine it!! Hit me up on ig if you need aid!!

    Yesss friend thank you so much for making this video!! I've watched numerous NMM tutorials but only yours has gone full Shia LeBeouf and inspired me to just. do. it!!! Thanks also for making me aware of Kirill Kanaev, gonna save up to get his book, it's so pricey! (On a positive note though I just found Angel Giraldez's first book for £15. Result!)
    Also once again, killer shirt 👌👌👌

      @@ataraxiapainting yes definitely a compliment! Like I get the basic technique but I'm always like "but what if I put the highlights in the wrong place" or something so I super appreciate how you demystified the concept and made it much less daunting!

    although i found your aproach much more in the feel of my view for the reflections on swords ,axes etc, i think metallic paints have an advantage because you can achieve the shine much faster and on the spots that you want..also..metallic paints tend to shine towards wherever you place your lamp or source of light instantly vs the nnm where the shine is fixed....

    • @BrinkofArt
      @BrinkofArt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This train of thought is very logical, however there is one quite funny thing happening with your brain when you look at NMM minis: Your brain, being the constant overachiever that it is, tries immediately, yet subconciously to move the mini in a way where the reflections make sense. What I wanna say is, yes, the NMM approach is way more static, but you generally don't really have to worry about it, as your brain will figure it out for you.

      My friend has a good point... though I personally believe we shouldn't treat true metallics in a different way than non metallic. I'm trying to pain reflections so put more color on the same spots I would if I were painting with NMM technique! And the result it's much more effective, especially in hand because nmm looks waaat better in pics than reality!
      Did I answer to you comment? Who knows ahah
