I bet the weather has been extra-rough up your way Anthony. I did squeeze a camp in last weekend but still wasn't able to avoid getting soaked for part of it. 😢
I'm increasingly restless because of all the rain and not getting out. Can't wait to wander the great outdoors. Totally agree with you about Heptonstall.
Hello Michael. I genuinely struggle to think of a nicer village that Heptonstall. Yes, all this rain is dreadful. I fancied a walk today but the forecast is grim....again.
So lovely to hear about your family Chris, and I too spent a lot of time as a child on small holding. My mother's parents, they had cows, pigs, geese, chickens, bees an orchard just all sorts I was so happy there playing with my cousins. That area is so interesting and I always refer to it as Last of the Summer wine country. Brilliant video. 🍻👍
Thanks Dave. As a kid it was great spending time around the animals. I remember the little jobs my auntie would give me to do, like leading the horses to the fields, even clipping the geeses wing feathers once so they wouldn't fly off....that was fun! Best wishes, Chris
Another superb video. Chris, you can chuck in a break from the wild camping any time you wish. It is always more than OK by me. And I've written down the comment from your grandad about the open pub door. I don't want to forget it either!
Thanks for that Laurie. I'm glad you said that. I know the wild camping vids are more popular but there is a lot more to my love of the countryside than just wild-camping and it's nice to get your positive feedback. Ha ha! Yes, my Grandad Harold was a real character. He died just before my 19th birthday but was a big influence on me growing up. Best wishes, Chris
Great little vlog to keep the fans happy, thank you, some great shots and nice stories about your family and the farm and the pub. Lovely. Looking forward to your camps again, I had hoped to do at least a camp each month (a sort of new year's resolution to encourage me to get out and about) but this damp weather is a serious mood killer 🙃.........
Thanks David. This weather is dreadful. I did a camp last weekend but still got soaked on part of it. Yes, a camp per month is a good target I think and something I aim for too. Next time though I need a guarantee of no rain before I set off! ATB, Chris
"Sad little face" - those grey skies day after day are dreary aren't they?! Lived in Seattle for a while, never again. A walk even in the rain is better than peering out the window!
Lovely and educational as usual Chris, I've told you before I'm a Yorkshireman but it's fantastic to hear a true Lancashire accent and follow you on your adventures. Atb and keep putting the great content on fella.
Thank you John. I was born in Lancashire but have a lot of Yorkshire blood, with my great grandfather being from Mytholmroyd. In fact, Yorkshire is probably my favourite walking county as I love the Yorkshire Dales too. Bye for now, Chris
Chris I love your stuff. Please keep posting - my Granddad was from Calderdale - I live in NZ so its great to have a look around and get a feel for the place. I have visited a couple of times, walked a few places you walked, and just love seeing it again. Your commentaries are lovely too. Thank you for posting.
Thanks for the lovely comment Escelle. I have family from Calderdale too and feel a great attachment to the place, even though I live in Lancashire 🙂. Best wishes, Chris
I came over in the late 90s Chris, and with my uncle we got the train to the stop before Hebden Bridge, walked along the canal side to Hebden, then walked to Burlees Lane where Souterhouse is, (where our ancestors lived), then up a tiny pack horse track that runs by Souterhouse up to the Mr Skip Inn, trekked over a bit of Wadsworth Moor, then back down to the valley near Mythmroyd, (one of the best days of my life) so I well remember the area, and we spent the day in Heptonstall also - gosh its like a time warp going there - I just love it. I hope you keep posting, its lovely seeing it all.@@ChrisJB
Hi Chris - Nice to get out for a walk, even on a rainy day! Your jelly ears remind me of seaweed I see along the beaches here… kinda of thick and waxy- I wonder if they’re at all related. Pretty stone details along the way, and interesting to see the old house on the lane too. Sounds like great fun getting to visit with your grandfather on the farm… life-long memories! 👍👍💕❤
@@ChrisJB Lol! If you go to the beaches would you find much seaweed? I haven’t harvested any, but we could get a permit then take a bit that’s still growing. I see quite a variety on the beach, and I guess it’s all edible. I decided to buy a bit that was dried like think crackers…it’s kind of salty, but good to try something new - lol!!
@@ChrisJB I think I might try too! I saw one local video where 2 guys harvested a few varieties and did a side by side taste test! I think I’ll learn about the harvesting permits and get one, then check it out. I’m interested to learn more about what’s going on under the waters of Puget Sound… maybe the open ocean is different. 👌
Know the area very well. Many is the time that the wife and I have parked up in Tod and then followed the Rochdale canal tow path as far as Hebden Bridge. There we would enjoy a well earned lunch at one of the tea rooms in the village before catching the bus back to Tod! Totally agree with your appraisal of Heptonstall. The place almost reeks of history! Not too keen on the walk up to the village from Hebden mind, a real steep hike that is.
Hello Gordon. Yes, a very steep climb....in fact it's hard work descending too, on the knees, etc. You past a little old graveyard on the climb/descent which I rather like.
Watching your video now, Chris. Commenting while watching. I absolutely love Calderdale area. In May we take part in Calderdale Way fell relays and have a few races in the area. I like those quirky stone steps, stiles and gets too. I call them magic portals. My kids now, when they are older think I am a bit loopy for calling them portals. But I always think there's something magical about them. My mum is like you, she knows all the mushroom names and which ones are edible and which ones are not. Interesting walk. You sold Heptonstall for me. I know there's a fell race there, but I've never done it. I just want to visit it with the family sometime.
Hello Olga. Yes, I'm a big Calderdale fan too. When I was a young chap I walked the Calderdale Way. I remember feeling poorly with a cold and found it very tough! I was in Heptonstall once just as the fell race was starting. It was a very nice atmosphere. 🙂

Glad somebody managed to get out. Weather here has been dreadful, heavy rain, high winds etc. I don't know your part of the world at all well - but I'm learning by watching these videos. all the best, Roger
Hello Roger. The South Pennines have a unique character really. Sandwiched between the Peak District and Yorkshire Dales they are often overlooked. I did manage a wild-camp in the Peak District last weekend but once again the rain managed to find me.
Wow, what a coincidence! This video flagged up just as I am watching a re run of Happy Valley, series 1.
Ooh Happy Valley is brilliant isn't it? That Tommy Lee Royce is a nasty piece of work.
I've been up and down that canal a few times lol
Really Lezley? Did you live in the area?
@Chris J-B yes I lived in Hipperholme, use to walk down to the canal at Brighouse and walk then get train back, it's how I started getting my walking legs, wish I had a canal here, great place to start from scratch
@Chris J-B I also walked a few of the canals around there, only one I didn't complete was the Leeds to Liverpool one

Thank you Hazie. Ha ha! Yes my pace is a bit brisk, though I do stop and dawdle a lot to take photos and look at things 🙂. Best wishes, Chris
