Hi Everyone, I haven't done one of those watercolour swatch demos in a while. However, since Daniel Smith Naphthamide Maroon has rapidly become one of my favourite colours of the season I decided to share its beauty with you. We will look at the transparency, dispersion, glazing, granulation and darkest to lightest values.
In the next video I will be mixing Naphthamide Maroon with a variety of other colours to see it's depth in mix-ability. :)

Naphthamide Maroon is not a granulating paint. For the paints that are granulating you do not need to drop more water; it will occur naturally when you paint on the paper. What you created is blooming or cauliflowering and the water just pushed the pigment to the edge. Also, granulation has nothing to do with how many pigments are used to create a color, it has to do with particle size in the pigment. : )

marsbeads I didn’t say granulation occurs from multiple pigments used in a watercolour, I said that about “colour separation” - such as Moonglow :) also regardless whether it doesn’t say “on the label” that is granulating colour in some cases it can have a slight granulation and not be “rated” as granulated. :)

@@AlyonasWatercolourCreations Right, but it may be confusing for some because you talk about that when coming to the granulation discussion. I respectfully disagree with your opinion on granulating colors. Either they are or they are not. Some pigments do settle onto the paper differently, but that is not granulation.

@@marsbeads - You misunderstood her. She was talking about the difference between *color separation* (which happens bc of multiple pigments pushing each other around) and *granulation.* Water is a major component in granulation, idk who told you it wasn't. Also, granulation CAN be a factor in multiple pigments, if for instance one of them is a granulator.
Moonglow has pb29 (Ultramarine) so its separation could be in part due to the natural granulation of that pigment. Saying granulation has nothing to do with how many pigments are used, ignores the fact that most brands, especially DS, have granulators in their mixes.
Anyhow, she clearly said she was going to add water to create blossoms, which helps to see granulation. This is true for swatches on the internet, I have a hard time seeing the granulation effect until they've been watered down. It's not as apparent in masstone. I clearly understood what she meant. You didn't, began to pontificate, and then had to backtrack once you realized your mistake.

Quotes on how adding water exposes granulation.....
      On Jackson's Art Supplies Website:
      "What causes granulation in watercolours?
      There are three important factors.
      - The nature of the pigment
      - Quantity and quality of water
*As a rule, granulation is more visible and clear when there is a lot of water both on the paper and mixed with the paint itself. So if you would like to increase granulation, USE MORE WATER.*
      - Paper texture
      On Jane Blundell's website:
"Many of the natural earth pigments, ultramarines, cadmiums and of course the DANIEL SMITH PrimaTeks have larger, more irregular particle sizes and granulate beautifully. *You can increase the effect* further by using rougher paper and *MORE WATER."*
      On Watercolor Affair's website:
"Brush a little water on the paper, then add the watercolor mixed with more water. This allows the particles to float until the heavier particles clump and do their thing on the paper. *One method to force granulation is to ADD A LOT OF WATER to your pigment,* then go back and charge your wash with more pigment."
      *Emphasis is mine

What a gorgeous color. I have a bit of it on a DS dot card and I also have a half-pan of Horodam perylene violet. I did a quick comparison and while they are similar, this napthamide maroon is much prettier. I love the lightest value when it's washed out with a lot of water. Looking forward to seeing how it mixes with other colors. 😁

Piper's Purpose I don’t know if you remember, a while ago I was looking for a pretty pale pink but not a pastel, I wanted it to be fully transparent. I think this is it, Naphthamide Maroon at its lightest makes the prettiest light pink! :)
