Hello everyone! I'm sorry it's been a while after I promised to get back to my regular uploads in February. The year continued to throw some heavy crap at me up until recently, oof. I'm going to me moving again soon (locally) which means that I'll be busy packing and what not throughout March, but I am both planning to make some content for you before that happens, and I think I will be in a much better head space after the move so that I can get back to my proper schedule.

I found that with Mission Gold and M Graham, both which can sometimes yield undesirable textures, it helps to vigorously mix up the paint with a toothpick when it comes right out of the tube and poured before letting it dry:)

Love all the paintings, but the thumbnails are wonderful, so free and the essence of loose watercolor. I'm thrilled that this series is back, I agree with other commenters--I often rewatch old Color Spotlights to inspire me when I'm using these colors. I'm always amazed how cerulean is such a great mixer and brings lovely texture to so many colors and also realize that I don't use my Perylene Maroon enough. Best of luck on your move!

I've been waiting for this Perylene Maroon spotlight for a while. I bought the W&N one but am yet to really use it. I really need to update my swatch chart.

So glad to see you back Denise, also kudos for mentioning the amaaaaazing silky blacks you get from mixing perylene maroon with perylene green and/or Indanthrone blue. It’s a remarkably versatile mixer for a red pigment!
I've painted a woodpigeon with their huge mating colour purplish grey chest. In the past, I've used the W&N fugitive Opera rose and Quin violet with the delightful Aqua green. I'm looking forward to trying Perylene maroon to make the subtle warm greys. I bought the Perylene maroon because I wanted an earthy red I could mix with Transparent orange or a yellow brown to paint terracotta roofing in landscapes. My old German shepherd dog and Doberman loved toasting themselves in front of a fire. My own dark hair in the sun as well as these pets had a distinct reddish tint to hair/fur.
I have White Night's version (Venice Purple) and love using it with their Bright Blue (a very cool PB15:3 that might not be the most pigmented but IS very bright and beautiful), it makes beautiful greys and close to a black color. The Venice Purple is more intense, bright and orange-y than Daniel Smith's one (as compared to the dot card) and warmer than Schminke's (also compared to the dot card).

Update: I just bought the W&N one and that Perylene Maroon and the White Nights one are very, very similar. Would be hard to tell them apart, at least on the papers I've tried them on (Canson XL and Saunders Waterford CP Cotton).

Schminke Perylene Maroon is my favourite right now, part of my favourite trio with Schminke Yellow Orange and Schmincke Cobalt (I know) Green Turquoise. They're definitely more on the opaque side but it's been a great trio for quick little plein air paintings!
I have the M Graham version and it’s been great for what I use it with- galaxy painting and character drawing. Like you said too, it’s great for mixes. I thought your painting turned out great, then again I’m partial to birds and M Graham xD

These last days I'm unwrapping a bunch of Roman Szmal paints, amongst them a couple of perylenes, also perylene maroon. I'm curious how that one will be compared with what you showed us here.

Great to see you back! Oh wow this is so interesting and timely for me! I just bought Perylene maroon by schmincke 2 days ago! The color shift is so disappointing I really hope mine doesn’t do that, so far I have only swatched it and saw no significant shift, it’s such a beautiful dark red I am in love! Previously I mostly used Sennelier Alizarin Crimson for my dark red needs but I love the Perylene maroon more and will be replacing it on my palette. I grabbed all of the Perylene line by schmincke on a whim because I just love the tones! Looking forward to see the other videos and how the other brands stack up!

I have the M. Graham perylene maroon and I find it's one of the colours I use most often in mixes. I love it with yellow ochre for skin tones, but I use it so many places, I love it :)
I absolutely love Perylene Maroon!!! It's one of the colors on my palette that I would be lost without. The first one I ever tried was from M.Graham, it came in one of their color collections and it's still my favorite. It's funny, I'm not sure I would've ordered it on my own and now I practically keep it stocked piled!
Can’t wait to see the one with perylene violet. The maroon and violet perylene colors are two of my favorite colors. I started with the schmincke versions of both and fell in love.

I loved the mixes with cerulean, it's something I definitely need to try.
My favourite perylene maroon is Winsor & Newton's. Sennelier's is a hue and even if it looks quite good, it can be disappointing on mixes.
I love to mix it with PR122 to get dusky pinks and blushy oranges.

A really cool mix perylene maroon and the pthalo blue or pthalo turquoise mixes a really deep black
The perylene maroon from Winston and newton and dioxazine violet is one of my favorite pairs for a warm violet dark hair. It’s also a great mix for shadows. I also mix a little nickel azo yellow to neutralize it more.
I can't decide now which is my fav! 🧡
Glad you're back! Teoh swatched the Schmincke version so I was glad to see you swatch and talk about DaVini's and W&N's since they are my top 3 brands. I liked W&N's the best followed by DaVinci's which I already have in my cart however, I think I will hold off with purchasing it due to its color shift. Thanks so much for this video!

I use M graham's perylene maroon and I love it! Paired with their Pthalo Green BS it makes some goooorgeous shades, including an almost black color at full strength. Cooler in tone than the mix with Perylene Green, also. :) So happy this series has returned!
Lizard friend was so fun to watch you paint. I haven’t got Perylene Maroon as yet but it is on my wish list. I’ve discovered I like earth-leaning reds. I love the smokey, atmospheric mixes! Oh the music in this video was lovely 💖

Very worth waiting for Denise. I have DS' version of this colour because I am so fond of earthy colours. I hadn't thought of mixing with cerulean blue, so that was very helpful info. Looking forward to seeing what Perylene Violet is all about. Pidgeons are actually quite pretty and I thought both your paintings showed off the colour mixes well.

I had the DaVinci version. I liked it wet, but not so much when it dried (that dried blood look). I've seen it do well in mixes, so I am considering adding it back into the palette.

Love this color! I got it last year in the Great Paint Purchase Splurge. I also got Napthamide Maroon PR171, which is more purple, and I go back and forth, liking one more than the other, and then back again! These were all DS paints, because my local store, Riley Street Art Supplies, carries every color DS makes, some but not all of both M Graham and Qor, and no W&N pro wc, and no DV, last time I was in there, tho it has been while. I also got M Graham trans iron oxides in yellow PY42, orange PY42+PR101, and red PR101, which I've watched Steve use in landscapes, which is what I mostly paint. I think I use the PY42 to mix into almost anything earthy (I know you don't love this color, but it makes really great beach sand), and it seems to mix well with all my browns and muted colors. I especially love to watch you paint, as I love watching your brush strokes, and when you blend them out...! I have learned so much just watching you paint. Good luck with the move!
What a cute little lizard 🥰 Mother Nature really has a sense for cool colour mixtures, doesn't it?
Wow. Winsor & Newton's version is gorgeous. I love the richness of it. See, this is why Winsor & Newton shouldn't always be discounted as a good watercolor brand. I know you never really said that, though, and that the main issue isn't the quality of their paints but more of the hype and the price. I own a lot of W&N (out of sheer convenience and availability near me) and I find a lot of their watercolors to be consistent and extremely pigmented. The only odd thing about the brand is their odd earth tones (using multi pigments or other pigments for other classically known colors like "Raw Umber" and using a totally unrelated pigment-- most brands do not do that).
Glad to see you back. Your content is amongst the best on youtube and skillshare being very in depth. The color spotlight series was a serious help in learning watercolors and making better choices when choosing pigments. Looking forward to the next entries (especially Phthalo Turquoise and transparent PR 101s).
Generally, I want to like Perylene Maroon but a lot them look incredibly underwhelming. IMO, it generally looks very flat when dry. Maybe because of the color shift, saturation loss and the speckling? However, it's stunning appearing to be a gorgeous blood red shade when wet.
My top two picks would be Winsor Newton (really pretty, high saturated and intense) and MG (best glaze). Da Vinci is eh. My least favorite would be Mission Gold and Holbein. Both look the most flat and least intense/saturated to me. Funny enough, Holbein's Perylene Maroon was on my first custom palette (which was a hot mess).
The pigeon thumbnail looks very cute but the sketch came out fine.

Excellent analysis of a lovely color as usual, Denise! I find your comments about the texture thats not granulation interesting. Any ideas about that and what thats attributed to? Such a great color series. Hope your move goes well.
Thanks Steve! I've noticed it with some M. Graham colors in particular that have what I refer to as "shelfing" texture only because I don't know what else to call it. There's a property to some of them that remind me of sedimentary rocks. I think it has to do with interactions with certain tap waters but I haven't done any controlled studies.
@@InLiquidColor Interesting! I'll watch for that because I'm curious now. I can't say I've noticed it so far but I'm a very textural painter so that's not really a surprise I guess.
I love this series so much, but I do blame you(and Dr. Oto) for me NEEDING multiples of the same pigment. The WN one and the one from DV are now going on the list. I have the MG and adore it despite how much the color dulls. It reallly bummed me out at first. I haven't been inspired to paint since around Dec due to being sick, but this vid got those wheels turning. Thank you!
I really like your sketches, they have a really illustrative feel to them that for some reason reminds me of 90s children's books, but I can't remember what they were called.
Yessss one of my ultimate favorite colors! I can never pack a set without perylene maroon, I just can't. I like how it's a bit earthy and I use it quite a bit for skin tones. Sometimes I can't help but notice it looks a bit like blood though and I don't know what to feel about that lmao
I recently got Schmincke's Perylene Maroon and it didn't really have a drying shift at all
I got the w&n version today. This is the weirdest color i've seen. If i have to give my first impression would be that is extremely desaturated, and like a transparent Indian red. When diluted looks very fleshy. Have to test it and use it but i think i will end up using it more than any other red since im not into saturated paintings and this would fit the bill for a primary earthy red. I love Indian red but that guy is too opaque bro 🤣.
Yay new episode!! I was actually waiting for this episode in particular because I really love M. Graham's Maroon Perylene and I was really shocked when I saw the other swatches because M.Graham's really looks earthy beside them. I actually use maroon perylene and anthraquinone blue to create my preferred neutral tint. M.Graham's versions create a black that could easily be adjusted in temperature by adding more of one of the colors and I just really love it.
note: I really thought that I was the only one experiencing the "granulation" thing in my M.Grahams. I don't mind it but it's really weird to see non-granulating colors do that. Btw, thank you for creating quality content for us here in youtube😊😊😊

I have the Roman Szmal and there is very little drying shift and no white spots, paper used is fabriano.
So happy to see color spotlight back in action. I just love them along with your swatching videos! I have a question- I notice you change the grip on your pencil and your paintbrush when you are drawing or painting. You hold them in the traditional way we were taught to hold a pencil with the index finger and thumb grasping, and you also switch to the thumb over the index finger grip. Is there a purpose for a different kind of grasping technique or simply hand fatigue and using some different muscles?
That's a good catch! I do grip the pencils/brushes different depending on what I need them for. I will hold them much closer to the tip if i want more control, and way further back the looser I want to be. I also went back to check and I don't think it's in this video, but I will also sometimes hold the pencil completely differently by grasping it with my thumb and index kind of like usual, but then putting the rest of the pencil under my hand (holding it with my other three fingers) rather than with the eraser end point upward. That's if I really want loosen my gestures!
In Liquid Color Thanks! That makes sense, use as a technique for looser painting and drawing. I do recall seeing the last grip you describe, for perhaps more coherent longer lines or flicks fir a desired look. It is something you do without thinking or a taught technique? I like learning subtle things to get particular effects!

I never thought pigeons got enough credit :D I specifically realized that when traveling to other countries and seeing how they regard their version of "pigeons" (whatever animals are common and not really glanced at), and some of them were SUCH stunning birds! Made me appreciate our dudes a little more :)

I wonder what Cobalt Teal (PG50) or Hansa Yellow Lt. (PY3) would do with this color?
They're great, too! Cobalt is similar to the cerulean, though cooler of course, and the lemon yellow type colors make vibrant cool oranges.
I'm interested in this blood maroon pigments, so I bought White nights venice purple in pan. I do like this color a lot, just as we see in Denise swatch! However, I feel like the huge drying shift is somehow hard to handle for me. If I use this color for mixing, I almost have no idea that what color I might get after drying finally. It struggles me a lot. Does anyone know what color has similar hue without having the drying shift?
maybe you can check the pigment Quinacridone Maroon PR206, in Winsor Newton it's called "Brown Madder", DS as Quinacridone Burnt Scarlet. They are in the same earthy red range

@@InLiquidColor I'm in the UK and avoid their products as much as I can. I grew with only them and Daler Rowney as choices so I know their products very well...thank god for the internet is all I can say! Give me Schminke or Daniel Smith any day :)
Can you please make a list of watercolour paints that aren't scanning friendly? I have a really head time with this :'(
It's literally been only those two for me.sometimes i make very slight adjustments but the green in particular is just wrong. The scanner I use is on my Amazon shop if that helps!
Denice, I have trouble finding Da Vinci watercolor paints in Canada. On Amazon.ca there are very little paints mostly brushes. I looked at the Da Vinci website in the U.S. but the shipping charges are out of this world. Why are the shipping charges so high in the U.S. compared to other countries? You can get free shipping from China and even Russia is cheaper. Go figure !!!
Have you found a vegan watercolor paper?
