Great two men, giving great advice. I do not give lessons to other people but I do give every one I know with lower back pain the advice to go and go deadlift. I tweaked my back on Monday deadlifting 225 (I'm just getting started) and this video showed where I went wrong. Sinking down at the ends of the movement, keeping full thoracic extension. Seeing him lay the stick on Omar's back made it all clear.

It's worth spending the time to perfect your form to get the most out of your lifts. I'll definitely be going back to the drawing board on my deads. Thanks Elliott!
I don't even care that the ad is a full minute long because this is quality advice totally worth the wait thanks elliot you truly are helping mankind thank you
Hey Elliot, I just applied this to my deadlift session today and I was very impressed. Short little history about me, about 2-3 years ago I was progressing my deadlift very nicely, worked up to a max of 435lbs while weighing under 200lbs which I thought was fairly decent. Shortly after I started experiencing some stiffness in my left leg, I assumed tight hamstrings since I am prone to pulling them as a result of a football injury. It progressively got worse and worse and I figured out it was sciatica. I went to a chiro and after multiple treatments that weren't helping he sent me for an MRI and it turned out I had a pretty bad herniation in my L5/S1. Determined not to give up, I started doing specific stretches, icing, heating, inversion table, etc. It still bothered me and the only time I felt any relief was when I was working out, I guess because of the adrenalin and intense focus. So I decided to start doing front squats and sumo deadlifts to build up my core. As of this year I am pain free most of the time, it only acts up if I sit on my ass too long and sometimes after intense deadlifts or squats. Although I don't have any pain anymore, my numbers are not close to what they used to be. I don't know if it is entirely strength loss or also a mental barrier I have because I am afraid of getting hurt again? Anyway, I tried your technique today and really focused on bringing my hips back. I was only using 315 but I felt absolutely no unwanted stress in my lower back and finally felt like I was doing the exercise perfectly safe for the first time in my life. Thanks a lot man, keep up the good work.
Elliot, thanks for all the videos, man. I had some fucked up shoulders--partly due to sports injuries/bone spurs and partly due to never really working on my back. I was always focused on doing presses and standing rows and shit. And then when I started doing deadlifts, I was doing them all wrong with my head up and then I fucked up my neck. Then I came across your channel and worked on my deadlift form and have been doing a lot of bent over rows and chin ups and even have worked on doing front squats and even have swallowed my pride and drastically lowered my normal squat weight to get ass to the grass and then build it all back up. I'm 40 in October and have a toddler and another kid on the way. I got into strength training for myself and also so I'd have the energy to keep up with my spawn! You have four kids. You know what I'm talking about. Anyway, this is a fucking novel, but dude, thanks for all your help (albeit just via video) and keep up the good work, my man!
I forgot to mention that I also have incorporated farmer's carries and all that work on my posterior chain has drastically improved my shoulders. I don't have to take ibuprofen just to make it through the day anymore! It really does just go to show that sometimes it's not necessarily a medical issue, it can just be something as simple as working on posture and getting your joints properly aligned. Duh.
These videos are the best. For someone who doesn't have a lifting coach or trainer, I watch these and really learn from what you're telling me. Thanks elliot!
Thank you so much for breaking down the exercise focusing on the back extension. Everyone else just focuses on hand placement and leg placement but you go into the details and with the stick it is evident where a person is going wrong.
THE BEST DEADLIFT VIDEO ON TH-cam!!! FOR ME AS A PERSONAL TRAINER IT IS AMAZING TO SEE HOW YOU WORK WITH PEOPLE. YOU ARE MY MASTER ELIOT!!! greatings from Poland ;-)
OMG I just video taped myself doing Deadlifts today so I actually saw me doing it for the first time ever and I was shocked, I'm totally making this stupid mistake where you're doing a partial squat first, so my butt goes up in the air, and then I start pulling with my back or something. Terrible form but how can I fix it myself without having anyone actually there helping me ?
you need to strengthen your hamstrings. make your you use your legs to push hard off the ground. Watch Alan Thrall's 'how to deadlift video', it's the best on the tube
I wish you'd create something that we could wear like a vest or something that has that bar, lumbar and is tactile/audible in order to train properly without you there.. Just until we get it lol
Lucas Valdez If I remember correctly he's said something about him training them before and he couldn't get them too grow. So now he dont even bother to train them at all. Dont know if heäs trolling, but his calves havent exactly grown anything to date

To all the people of the internet that are out of shape and watching this: Unless you have someone (like Elliott) showing you exactly what you are doing wrong, you are not going to be deadlifting (and squatting, etc.) correctly. You can watch as many of these videos as you want, but it doesn't beat having someone show you in real time. PEACE
I agree with this, however there is value in video recording yourself deadlift as well...Most people who have incorrect form won't know it until they get a 3rd person perspective or worse, injure themselves...we can research proper form and record ourselves...I have done this and INSTANTLY saw what I was doing wrong...everything is fine up until my initial 25% of the movement where I lock my knees too early...I would have never known if I didn't record myself :)
Good thought except Ive learned way more off TH-cam than I would from any personal trainer. 90% of "personal trainers" have no clue what they're talking about. Can get a certification in one weekend. Seen countless dummy personal trainers making their clients do things improperly for one and making their clients do things their body cant physically do because of rigidities. Would never find someone like Elliot Hulse in real life unless you were fortunate enough to stumble upon his gym.
Mike Oxlittle That is sad, but true. I don't think personal trainers are necessary for micromanaging everything in your fitness routine, but instead I meant that personal trainers (good ones) are very valuable when it comes to learning how to complete a compound movement like deadlift, squat, power cleans, etc. TH-cam is great as a supplement, but in my opinion everyone who wants to go out and start deadlifting should get a trainer who is qualified. Once you learn how to deadlift correctly, you will notice almost everyone who deadlifts at the gym does so incorrectly, and it is a bit scary.
you're right man that is of paramount importance because I have now injured myself my deadlifting incorrectly when i thought I did. I am out for no less than 2 months due to a very bad SI joint dysfunction!!
I wish everyone would come to this channel and learn how to do exercises correctly. I see so many people complaining about how their back hurts after doing deadlifts, but if you're pulling correctly it shouldn't hurt at all. I think it just comes down to pride, not wanting to drop the weight and correct the form.
It just shows, that even someone who can be considered a good/strong Deadlifter, can take advice from someone to improve their form or strength...great video!!
Shoulders down and back, ass out, chest up. Push from your heels and hips. (Glutes and hamstrings) When lowering same exact deal. Lean forward just enough to get the bar in front of your knees then lower with control (DO NOT negative on the final portion of the drop for may cause lower back injury on heavier weights) One motion, practice with light weight for a month until it's second nature. Don't pull with your arms just hold the bar like a couple of meat hooks. Keeping your head down lets you watch for perfect timing for the ecentric portion but you'll feel weaker because your center of balance is off. That will change as your muscles balance. Light weight and correct form then move up. Elliot is spot on. Practice makes it second nature so it will feel easier each time.
yeah I wouldn't take CT as gospel, seeing as all his content is bought out and sponsored by big corps, unlike Elliot who so far to me seems pretty raw besides his "living fuel"
Awesome stuff Elliot. Lots of people struggle (including Omar) with proper form, and it definitely takes a skilled and watchful trainer to weed out the kinks in everybody and anybody who's interested in picking up good firm and growing better.
justis Mac why not just wear regular training pants. Not saying its wrong. Seems to be a thing know wearing shorts and leggings. Is it a fashion thing?
Am I the only one that thinks Elliot makes it a lot more complicating that it's supposed to be? I've seen strongmen lifting and not following as strict advice as this with no problems. It feels like remembering all this advice is more of a workout than the actual lift.
This is a corrective deadlift, meant to teach you how to hold good posture and activate the right muscles. This is complicated for people who actually have a bad posture
iReturnV1deotapes you are exactly correct ... not a single elite world level deadlifter lifts like this .. and B4 anyone jumps in spouting nonsense ... I've been coached by a world elite level deadlifter ... and my technique looks nothing like this i'm 45 years, drug free and never get back issues caused by deadlifting ... its over complicating a straightforward movement ..
+KJH Strength & Powerlifting Powerlifting technique is way different from the proper and correct technique, just look at how the powerlifters do bench press.
Dr. Dafuq I am a powerlifter, with a national level total, for age weight ... and an international qualifying total for the WDFPF, closing in on single lift WR for my age weight group, which is 242.5kg which I've pulled before but just not in comp and on an elieko powerlifting bar ...
M. Reed Certain muscles responsible for thoracic and lumbar spinal extension attach to the cervical spine and the base of the skull. When these muscles are activated in a deadlift (which is exactly what you want), they will naturally pull on their attachment points and the neck will extend because of this. If someone "tucks their chin in" when deadlifting, they will not fully utilize these back extensor muscles, leading to a less effective movement.
This is an awesome one, Elliott. I spent thirty minutes last night looking at your old vids and saw this one this afternoon. Boom! Serendipity. Perfect and exactly what I (and many others, I'm sure) needed. Have an awesome weekend, brother.
so glad i saw this ,i was obviously doing it wrong before this ..now im constantly remembering this as i go through the motion when dead lifting ..thanks you...
Great coaching cues for this athlete. It's like there are 1000 different buttons to press and trying to find the right one or two that will connect with the athlete.
mad respect to omar. For a guy who knows so much about the science of exercise, he sure is willing to learn and take advice from a guy who specializes in strength training .
This is why its good to "pull" yourself down into the starting position, activating your lats, and taking the slack out of the bar...I'm not an expert by any stretch of the word, but this has always helped me to keep a stable core and that arch in my back throughout the deadlift...I'm still working on my form though...I tend to not "sit back" enough and feel the weight in my heels so my legs will lockout too early...but this is some good stuff right here
dre2kule Very true. I like to think of the deadlift as 2 parts. The first part is pulling yourself into position by flexing the back muscles and pushing the bar 1 inch from the ground. Part 2 is just pushing into the ground and extending.
Thanks for showing this. I had recently done a 405 deadlift ( a personal record ) but after watching this I realized I did it wrong. Shyt I even had it uploaded, so much for that. Kind of hurts knowing your best lift doesn't count but hey I'd rather lift a light weight correctly than a heavy weight wrong. Thanks again
Elliotts simply got to be one of the best coaches out there today - I hope he gets a chance to make videos in the fashion someone like say Rippetoe does - so he can get recognition on a larger scale! My lifting and approach to strength has changed tremendously since I started watching Elliotts vids! I can safely say I am building a strong functional well balanced body that can do real shit and not just look good!!
so sad that i injured my lower back couple of weeks ago coz of fuck up form i did. This video rlly has taught me how to improve the dead lifting form. Cheers!!!!
sometimes we think why the hell we need such type of instructions but when we workouts over yrs and yrs if we do continue with just little with bad form , itwill cost definately more over in yrs we will get many injuries so better to do with good form from start ths guy elliot is so nice we are proud tht we have a nice instructor for free, very very helpful video
hey Elliott this is amazing, you should write a book specifically about how to rebuild your deadlift. I'm from the UK so obviously I can't come over and learn from you; so a book would definitely be helpful for people like me. Just a thought anyway, love the vids keep them coming.
Van halen and deadlifts. good shit. ive learned so much from this. Thought i was using correct form on the deadlift but i now realize i was nowhere near. gonna have to drop weight and start again.
great video. my friend who is in a college class has the same rules about form. makes you realize form before weight, and to build from there. thanks for the video, and way to lift Omar!
Thank you so much for posting this instructional video because this is exactly what I need. When I train strong man in the past I never stressed the importance of core strength. So although I was strong on the outside still on the inside I was a house of cards built on a pile of sand. Now after all these years thinking I knew what I was doing I'm relearning everything. For all intents and purposes I know nothing I am like a baby learning how to walk. Currently I'm only lifting with empty bar.
Man, that Elliot Hulse deadlift is a thing of beauty. Luckily I watched this video before I started any deadlifting so I'll get the form first before any bad habits kick into muscle memory.
I have used visualization in the past to help clients understand the "arch". Ask them to hold a hypothetical box in front of their body, now open the door with your butt. Helps the client visualize the arch and I get a greater response in technique and form.
Elliot, thanks for this video. I do raw powerlifting and at 132 I got a 451.75 DL. My form isn't too bad, but thanks for this video. This will surely help me for nationals in July, thanks!
Yo Elliott I´ve added deadlifts and squats to my gym routine and decreased the number of sets I do. After watching your videos and trying your exercises I found out that I am very broken from the training you do in the gyms, meaning shoulder issues and in the shape one is when one cannot perform a frontal squat. After a week of incorporating your techniques I feel my body stronger and my posture rectified.
Elliot probably has the most beautiful deadlift form I've ever seen. He looks like a robot when performing it.

yeah I wouldn't take CT as gospel, seeing as all his content is bought out and sponsored by big corps, unlike Elliot who so far to me seems pretty raw besides his "living fuel"
Gospel? No. Get off your arse and lift something? Simple truth in that
Awesome stuff Elliot. Lots of people struggle (including Omar) with proper form, and it definitely takes a skilled and watchful trainer to weed out the kinks in everybody and anybody who's interested in picking up good firm and growing better.
why's that dude wearing leggings
i wear legging and shorts keeps legs warm and allows drag along shins without tearing your skin. In a meet i don't only in training
justis Mac why not just wear regular training pants. Not saying its wrong. Seems to be a thing know wearing shorts and leggings. Is it a fashion thing?
My favorite Van Halen album. Nice choice, and great coaching!
This is complicated for people who actually have a bad posture
anyone who ever hurt themselfs doing it, was doing it wrong. doing it right you wont get hurt.
iReturnV1deotapes you are exactly correct ... not a single elite world level deadlifter lifts like this .. and B4 anyone jumps in spouting nonsense ...
Dr. Dafuq I am a powerlifter, with a national level total, for age weight ... and an international qualifying total for the WDFPF, closing in on single lift WR for my age weight group, which is 242.5kg which I've pulled before but just not in comp and on an elieko powerlifting bar ...
this reminds me of watching elliott with paul check, chef buff has so much respect and attentiveness to what hes saying
"tuck your chin" terrible advice
men, shut the fuck up you don't know shit.
PhysiqueAndStrenght lol
PhysiqueAndStrenght hahahaha (y)
How so? Like so many in the comments, you criticize advice in the video without offering reasoning or a counterargument.
Fantastic use of the stick as a visual reference and a sensory reference for the athlete.
I need to get to the strength camp one day and have Elliot rebuild my technique from the ground up, this is amazing.
The best deadlifting technique video I have seen on the web. Thanks Elliott
this is some elliot experimentation right here. love it
It's so good to see someone willing to learn correct form and technique! Nice one guys!
Was thinking the same thing. Not only that. It is posted on youtube as well so his followers can see it. Respect to Omar.
man I wished I had some personal trainer like that! so much dedication and knowledge..
The posture takes some getting used to but engaging all of those muscles added an additional 20 lbs to my deadlift today. Awesome video
***** "Hump the bar" is a good cue for the lockout yes ;)
***** The penis has very strong muscles and you should be incorporating them in your deadlift, otherwise it's bad form
***** Have you tried deadlifting with no hands? (if you know what I mean) ;)
***** You don't need your wife to create a straight bar... there are many other ways to reach that goal lol. Think about when you were single
This is absolutely the best deadlift video i have seen! Thanks Elliot! Keep those awesome videos coming bro! :)
This was perhaps the best deadlift tutorial I have ever seen in my life.
just heading to get my lift in and wanted to watch a proper deadlift again. great timing! haha keep up the great vids elliot!
Last one was picture perfect for him. Kudos to you Elliot.
I've been unwittingly doing SL deadlifts this whole time. Will try this today, thanks!
Im glad to see this, been going to the gym for a few months now and struggled getting a good form for deadlift, i dont wanna develop any bad habits
so sad that i injured my lower back couple of weeks ago coz of fuck up form i did. This video rlly has taught me how to improve the dead lifting form. Cheers!!!!
That first rep Elliot ... So damn perfect
I did these today and my back was screaming!!! I had to take off 100lbs off the bar but idc because my back feels awesome!! Thanks Elliott
sometimes we think why the hell we need such type of instructions but when we workouts over yrs and yrs if we do continue with just little with bad form , itwill cost definately more over in yrs we will get many injuries so better to do with good form from start ths guy elliot is so nice we are proud tht we have a nice instructor for free, very very helpful video
good to see a coach who actually understands the principles of functional anatomy.
THIS is for sure one of the most useful videos ever made in the history of human race.
Great points Elliot! This needs to be watched more than once.
this is the best deadlift video available out there
So much info in 7 minutes of a session! I can't wait for deadlifts tomorrow!
Don't see the emphasis on form anymore, GREAT instructions!!
thx elliot. i employed this technique and immediately saw an increase in my lift.
this is the most information i can get from dead lift information. thanks elliot
hey Elliott this is amazing, you should write a book specifically about how to rebuild your deadlift. I'm from the UK so obviously I can't come over and learn from you; so a book would definitely be helpful for people like me.
Just a thought anyway, love the vids keep them coming.
Thank you again eliot, I have hurt my back twice this year from bad technique...
This video has really helped :)
Been waiting for a video like this to learn how to deadlift! Thanks big E!
Great advice! Outstanding teaching too I will try this today thanks!
Luckily I watched this video before I started any deadlifting so I'll get the form first before any bad habits kick into muscle memory.
same here, now I deadlift with a straight back even on Max efforts
I know Omar said he is gonna stick to his way of deadlifting, but i fucking love this method that Elliot teaches, it feels a lot more effective to me.
I can’t get enough watching this video it’s superbly educational
I have used visualization in the past to help clients understand the "arch". Ask them to hold a hypothetical box in front of their body, now open the door with your butt. Helps the client visualize the arch and I get a greater response in technique and form.
Great video Elliot!! I've had to rebuild my deadlift because I was so used to stiff leg dead lifts. Thanks!
Elliot, thanks for this video. I do raw powerlifting and at 132 I got a 451.75 DL. My form isn't too bad, but thanks for this video. This will surely help me for nationals in July, thanks!
Very cool to see form improve from the beginning of the video to the end
This is a great video. I love this Elliot. Would LOVE to see many more of these. I am gonna try this tomorrow as it is leg day tomorrow for me.
After a week of incorporating your techniques I feel my body stronger and my posture rectified.
wow, anyone can definitely learn from eliot, i thought i had my form down but i lose the correct form halfway up, time to work on it in the gym!
Dude, thanks a lot for this video. Will definitely do this when I start deadlifting again.
Stay strong!
