An Earnest Plea to Charismatics

  • Are the modern Charismatic gifts the same as those described in the New Testament? Christ Presbyterian Church calls on Charismatics to examine their faith in the light of God's Word and of history. This video is not meant as a condemnation, but a sincere plea to true believers to be good Bereans and a sincere plea to nominal believers to seek true conversion. Christ Presbyterian Church is a congregation of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Magna, Utah (www.gospelutah.org).

    as someone who was raised charismatic pentecostal, this is very eye opening, I have been doing some serious "deconstruction" of all the extrabiblical doctrine I have been taught, and began attending a reformed baptist church and started diving deep into the word of God

      so you left one false teaching for another? theres no such thing as a "reformed baptist". Baptists were never part of the reformation. Why do you now embrace a theology that teaches God hates 99% of humanity and has left them helpless with no offer of mercy? remember this the next time u hear of an infant dying. Reformed theology teaches that "non elect" infants who die, burn in hell. I am no charismaticm but I wonder which theology is the greater danger

      I think that the real term you are looking for is reforming. Deconstructing is demolishing. Reforming is an attempt to go back to orthodox christianity. I was taught John Calvin was against the early fathers but I find out that John Calvin quoted them very frequently in his institutes. I am reforming my faith.

    • @caman171
      @caman171 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@chiukid well I hope you keep "reforming" to the point that you abandon that gnostic gospel that says God hates 99% of Adam's race and that babies are born guilty of his sin to the point that should they die, theyd go to hell. If you base your doctrines on a man that killed those who disagreed with him, then you are no better than the Roman Church from which he came, and certainly no disciple of Jesus Christ

There are many true believers in this movement, but they are very easily deceived. I am thankful that God has brought me out into more of a reformed view. I was born again while attending an Assembly of God church. They recognize the trinity and do not claim apostolic succession. When my pastor retired, I moved to a Word of Faith non denominational church. It began well, but degraded as the pastor gained wealth.
    TWO DECADES later I saw some light.
    The truth is, the baptism of the Holy Spirit is real and a great gift. Unfortunately, the churches that teach it have no theological moorings and succumb to sometimes greed, sometimes literal insanity.

    Hearing you speak of Montanism makes me think of Tertullian. I am now reading his work: "Against Marcion". With all of his wise words debunking Marcionism, it's hard for me to believe that he actually fell for Montanism.

    • @ancientpathstv
      @ancientpathstv  3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Tertullian, like a lot of brilliant men, was sometimes clever enough to talk himself into bad positions. I may be mistaken, but I think he was attracted to the Montanist zeal, but eventually broke with them before he died.

    • @MadsValencia
      @MadsValencia ปีที่แล้ว +6

      "Apparently Tertullian’s strict moral views influenced him to join the Montanists. Also, Tertullian had grown impatient with the hypocrisy he saw in some quarters of the early church and particularly disliked the half-heartedness of church leaders. Additionally, the Montanists believed that their leaders were receiving new prophecies from the Holy Spirit, a view that appealed to Tertullian’s enthusiastic nature. When he embraced Montanism, Tertullian became its most well-known adherent. However, toward the end of his days, Tertullian became disenchanted with Montanism and started another splinter group. This group, which became known as Tertullianism, existed for the next two centuries in Carthage.
      Tertullian died toward the close of the first quarter of the third century, somewhat in obscurity. Despite falling prey to fallacies toward the end of his life, he was a pillar used by God."

    How tragic is the truth about John Wesley as revealed near the end as now it makes it much easier to understand what’s happened to the United Methodist Church over the last few decades, or so, as I’ve seen the results of his false teachings in the lives of some of my family members who I was horrified to find out, didn’t understand the gospel and we’re trying to work their way to heaven.
    A dear aunt, who died a couple of years ago, is included in this, as I tried to reach her with the truth, but to no obvious avail.

      In 1981 I was taking Summer courses at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia. A man sitting next to me was an American who was a Presbyterian. I casually said to him that The United Church of Canada was a union of the Methodist Church, 2/3 of the Presbyterian Church and the Congregationalist Church. He said "how can you merge Calvin with Wesley?". It happened in 1925. What happened was that when northern and western Canada was settled there were a lot of small and isolated villages and towns. In those places there were not enough Methodists to have their own church. Also there were not enough Presbyterians to have their own church. That was true for other settlers of faith. Out of necessity what Protestants there were had to join together to worship. These churches were called Local Union Churches. Also sometimes a Methodist church would be composed of people from other faith backgrounds that went there because it was the only Protestant church close by. Out of this came the idea for union. In 1925 the newly minted United Church of Canada had 2 million people out of a population of 10 million Canadians. Liberalism has destroyed the United Church. in 2018 both the United Church and the Anglican Church stated that based on current trends both denominations will cease to exist by 2040. The Presbyterian Church( a liberal denomination) will probably be extinct too.

      The wailing wall was a retaining wall for the temple mount. Those are not the stones of the temple to which Jesus pointed in Mark 13. Among the problems--and there are several--with Dr. Brown's view of little-a apostles is that it proves too much. If an apostle is simply one who is sent out, as he claims, then every missionary and every church planter, at a minimum, is an apostle (and arguably every Christian is an apostle, because we're all sent out as ambassadors of Christ). He then tries to qualify that by limiting that to those with special gifts or "annointings," but there's simply no basis to do so--the gifts resulted from the apostolic position; they were not definitional of it.

    Too bad Pastor Wallace doesn’t do a documentary about Ravi Zacharias, who he shows a brief clip of toward the end of the video right before exposing John Wesley whose brother Charles may have also been unconverted yet was able to write some great hymns, like my favorite, “And Can It Be“ as the fourth stanza of it accurately describes the salvation experience.

    For instance, the Rev. John Love (an orthodox presbyterian minister) came to Christ. But later, in a period of spiritual darkness and, he began to doubt his conversion (He has written this in his diary). But after a period of time, the Sun of Righteousness began to shine upon his soul again, and again he rejoiced in Christ.

    According to Dr. Vinson Synan, the account of Agnes Ozman's speaking in tongues in Chinese was confirmed in a Chinese laundry. He said it was in 'some of their papers.' I probably should have pressed on the topic of publishing that, but we were talking about something else that was time sensitive. I have also read that Bohemians confirmed that Ozman spoke in tongues in Bohemian.
    There were numerous accounts from The Azusa Street Revival and other Pentecostal meetings at that time of people understanding speaking 'in tongues' in their own language at the Azusa Street meetings and elsewhere, and there have been numerous accounts of similar experiences on the missions fields and elsewhere since. Parham thought tongues were to evangelize the world. That was a popular idea with some early Pentecostals, but it did not have a solid exegetical basis. There is no evidence that the 120 actually __preached___ in tongues. They could have been praising God in tongues.
    AG Garr had an experience where someone identified him as speaking in tongues in Bengali, which sounded different on that occasion from what he had said in tongues previously. When he went to India, he did not find that he just spoke in tongues in the local dialect. That wasn't guaranteed to happen in scripture. It was an assumption he and others he had heard had made. In Acts 2, many in the crowd could understand what was spoken in tongues, but not in I Corinthians 14.

      Faith isn't a "leap into the void;" it's trusting the God of the Bible, based on what He has revealed about Himself. He has shown Himself trustworthy, so we do what He says through the Biblical prophets and apostles. The issue of the video, is that counterfeit prophets and apostles twist the Bible or add to it.
      Church history gives us a pretty good idea of the difference between faith and presumption. When COVID hit, we didn't look for new revelation on how we should handle it. We prayed and tried to act reasonably in the light of the Scriptures. He tells us not to forsake the assembling of ourselves, and the government seemed to be clearly lying. By faith, we kept meeting, even though the local government said we couldn't. Some people stayed home for a while; others didn't. Some people wore masks, while others didn't. We asked everyone to give one another Christian liberty. We didn't invite persecution, but we didn't avoid it either. By not making a spectacle of ourselves, we had no trouble, and no one got COVID from the worship services.

      John Wesley himself was a liar and a heretic. The Wesleyan movement is varied, so I don't want to offer a blanket evaluation. For many, Whitefield continued to moderate Wesley's teachings, even though Wesley had tried to expel such influences.

      @@장인호-s3m Lutherans sometimes confuse membership in the visible and invisible church. If someone believes a person can be truly regenerated and then lost, they have a poor understanding of the gospel.
      Similarly, I've spoken with many self-described Arminians, or "Cal-minians" who deny the doctrines of grace, but then confess that God saved them in spite of themselves. Arminianism is another gospel, but not all its proponents seem to understand the issues.
      Sanctification is the work of God's Spirit in all who have been regenerated, but that's altogether different from Wesley's second work of grace that supposedly brings perfection in this life. Believers are counted perfect from Christ's sake now, and will be perfected, but not until they are with Him. Wesleyanism only makes sense as an overreaction to "easy believism."

    Your claims about Wesley believing that we only attain salvation through imparted righteousness and entire sanctification are false.
    Excerpts from John Wesley's Sermon: Justification by Faith
    I. 9. This, therefore, is the general ground of the whole doctrine of justification. By the sin of the first Adam, who was not only the father, but likewise the representative, of us all, we all fell short of the favour of God; we all became children of wrath; or, as the Apostle expresses it, "judgment came upon all men to condemnation." Even so, by the sacrifice for sin made by the Second Adam, as the Representative of us all, God is so far reconciled to all the world, that he hath given them a new covenant; the plain condition whereof being once fulfilled, "there is no more condemnation" for us, but "we are justified freely by his grace, through the redemption that is in Jesus Christ."
    II. 1. But what is it to be "justified" What is "justification" This was the Second thing which I proposed to show. And it is evident, from what has been already observed, that it is not the being made actually just and righteous. This is "sanctification;" which is, indeed, in some degree, the immediate fruit of justification, but, nevertheless, is a distinct gift of God, and of a totally different nature. The one implies what God does for us through his Son; the other, what he works in us by his Spirit. So that, although some rare instances may be found, wherein the term "justified" or "justification" is used in so wide a sense as to include "sanctification" also; yet, in general use, they are sufficiently distinguished from each other, both by St. Paul and the other inspired writers.
    II. 5. The plain scriptural notion of justification is pardon, the forgiveness of sins. It is that act of God the Father, hereby, for the sake of the propitiation made by the blood of his Son, he "showeth forth his righteousness (or mercy) by the remission of the sins that are past." This is the easy, natural account of it given by St. Paul, throughout this whole epistle. So he explains it himself, more particularly in this and in the following chapter. Thus, in the next verses but one to the text, "Blessed are they," saith he, "whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered: Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin." To him that is justified or forgiven, God "will not impute sin" to his condemnation. He will not condemn him on that account, either in this world or in that which is to come. His sins, all his past sins, in thought, word, and deed, are covered, are blotted out, shall not be remembered or mentioned against him, any more than if they had not been. God will not inflict on that sinner what he deserved to suffer, because the Son of his love hath suffered for him. And from the time we are "accepted through the Beloved," "reconciled to God through his blood," he loves, and blesses, and watches over us for good, even as if we had never sinned.
