I know why some have no issue with this while others might think it's not right... personally it just feels uncomfortable.
Given that the Z has come to represent the rape, torture, and murder of innocent civilians in a conflict which is still live... yeah, not a great look. It's akin to playing with a large swastika or SS symbol if Germans were still gassing Jews and gypsies and massacring convents full of nuns.
I see no Issue with the Z, almost as if it actually is necessary because they’re literally using near matching equipments like the BMP-2

If the same vehicle is used for multiple factions, using any distinguishing marker is fair game imo. It might be insensitive to some extent but at the same time however, look at War Thunder and the multiple Shermans that are used and are incredibly similar to each other in the same ranking as other faction variants. The way the vehicle looks in key areas would determine if it's wise to engage in combat or not. A clear Z on all sides just makes that mental calculation quicker.

Yep and this is literally why Ukrainian forces use yellow and blue armbands while Russia uses red or white in the war. Both sides have very similar gear and don't want blue on blues.

Honestly the Z marker is a good thing. Seeing as Russian and Ukrainian vehicles are usually very similar or the same having this marker will reduce friendly fire on both sides.

how do you get on modded servers? whenever i go to search for them or i think there’s a tab for “custom servers” if i’m not wrong i just get random servers which are usually dead or are locked

Yes, I would agree with you if the war was already over and perhaps a few years had already passed since the end of the war. But in the middle of the war, while every day the symbol is used to advertise the "special operation" and thus indirectly also the war crimes in Russia, and soldiers and vehicles with this symbol commit these crimes, I find it inappropriate.
That's why I find the swastika comparison from the top comment under this short unsuitable for the current situation.

No, not necessarily. However this war ends, the Z will be apart of the history of the Russo-Ukrainain War, just like the swastika is for WW2.

At the first days yes it was for that purpose only. But now it is much more than that. It is also symbolise whole russian fascism and politic. They use Z everywhere to promote Putin, war, and other government needs like conscription and holding people from fleeing the country.

There is Z, V, Y(?) and other letters, depends on what army group they were a part of.

People just get touchy feely with the letter Z since it's on propaganda or promotion or whatever you call what the Russians made at the start of the conflict that plastered the letter Z all over it.

Meaning "Call" in Russian
Z and V (forgot the names they use) is used by Both DNR and LNR (Donbass regions/former Ukrainian regions that have been fighting in the Ukrianian cival war agains Ukraine since 2014)
Z and V also have Russian units attached to them to support and bolster the LNR and DNR troops
They are not restricted to mobile phone use or capturing footage, hence why you see so many videos from the Russian side but the symbols are almost always Z or V
At the start of the war Z was mainly used by the DNR forces while V was used by the LNR forces, but I beleive groups started to use whatever of the 2 they wanted to as time went on
Group O is know as "Brave group" and consists of strictly just Russian Military forces from Russia itself, they have restrictions on phones and video capture, hence why you almost never see the O group videos from the Russian side besides news or war bloggers/journalists.

They often have short clips of going night sweeping operations. So of course they would be little known as they are the special forces.
The Russian Z is nothing more than an identifier, it’s used to symbolise a friendly (or enemy) vehicle. It is more prominent in the Russo-Ukrainian conflict because both sides have very similar or sometimes the same vehicles. An it looks like they put the Z on the vehicles in the game for the same reason. I agree the war needs to stop, even as a former Russian soldier, but I don’t think we should stop doing things because they are to similar to real life events.

Russian Z is much more than that from the first days of the war. Its the most used symbol of the modern propaganda and putting it inside the game is as fucked up as it could be.

I understand why people may be offended, but if it is not for you, don’t play it. People want to experience a military simulation, so let’s simulate it realistically. If it scares you or makes you feel uncomfortable, then don’t play it. Imagine if someone who had just lost a child played a story game where at some point you lose a child, imagine how weird it would sound if she tried getting the game shut down because it offended her. It just isn’t for her.
I think if we enjoy games of any other wars, then this is acceptable as well.
Most other war games cover wars that are long over or are completely fictionalized. This mod is incredibly poor taste because people are dieing right now as we speak in this war.

Personally I think the Z is OK because it's accurate. If you're adding a faction that's fighting against the Ukrainian armed forces you might as well put the Z logo on the vehicles.
Z is just a marking of what type unit or something they are. The fact people see it as some big representment is dumb. Pro or anti rusdian is just fucking stupid.
It's considered highly offensive by Ukrainians and has been utilised as a political symbol by Russia. If WW2 was in the middle of going on and somebody released a mod based on it with swastikas in it I can't imagine anybody in an Allied country being very happy about it.
I think the real question here is, is it right to make an ongoing war into something fun? Is that offensive to the people who have experienced enormous suffering due to the war?
@Phi Long Ukrainians and the Ukrainian government have been very aggressive about controlling the narrative and getting international opinion on their side. Yes, they do "worry" about things like this. Not the point though. It could apply to any ongoing conflict. Should we really be acting out and having fun with something that's actively killing hundreds of people every day? Personally I wouldn't find it enjoyable.

I mean... As far as I concerned with the whole Z marker on vehicles, its understandable. The UaF and the RuAF pretty much use the same vehicles, so it makes sense that since they both have the standard green camo, they need markings.
The camo of Ukrainian vehicles is technically different but good luck identifying the differences in the heat of battle!

The z is basically just a friend or foe identifier for looking at the vehicle from a distance, based on the marking you can tell if it’s Russian and which offensive it came from. They have to use that because of the similar equipment Ukraine uses, hopefully we can get them on western platforms.
That’s what it used to be but now it’s used in Russian propaganda as the symbol to rally behind for support of the war

Idk why anyone who plays squad would have an issue with it, it’s only a representation. It makes no difference one way or the other to play a game with 3D models and textures that depict such and such military. If I recall correctly the MEE mod has ISIS too

I tried this mode and ended up playing as the Russian faction. It's a surreal experience. The fact that we can play in a conflict happening right now is insane.
Playing as the Russians did make me feel uncomfortable, and it's GREAT! The uncomfortable feeling is what makes it interesting. Just because something puts you out of your comfort zone doesn't mean that its wrong.

Just after it officially became war a bunch of people on arma 3 were asking for mods relating to the conflict and got basically insulted by the devs and many players. I checked yesterday and 2 years later they have full faction mods, real life towns etc. kinda funny how after a little time its becomes acceptable

this is cool. That’s part of why we play these is to replicate real world scenarios. This just adds realism to it for me since i can go on my phone and find a video of someone doing something similar to what i’m doing in the game

The “Z” is literally just an invasion marking. The same as “+” on the Ukrainian vehicles or the “V” on coalition vehicles in Iraq
People are using the Z for more than that, Im pretty sure that pro russian protesters used it, its not just an invasion marker anymore

I have complicated feelings as a Ukrainian soldier who has fought in multiple campaigns now. But really, its not any different than the slew of games that released during the GWOT using the Middle Eastern conflicts as their settings. Seeing the "Z" doesn't offend me, it just let's let's know who my enemy is. Idkmt have any problems with it, but I don't know when, if ever, I would play it myself (although to be honest, FPS games have been rough for me this past year anyways).

Both factions have vehicle and uniform distinction. The Ukraine have the + on their vehicles, and the Russians have the Z because they use the same equipment.
On top of that, an equal sense of nationalism is present in both factions. If realism is the goal, there’s no reason that the patriotism seen from both sides in real life shouldn’t be portrayed in fiction
I fought in Afghanistan in 2012. Me and my buddies favorite game to unwind to was Medal of Honor 2010. The one were you are playing as SF vs Taliban. The game is actually banned from sale on Military bases but you could buy it and bring it on base. It's a game nothing more. If you don't like it, don't play.

I’m working on a map of Marinka, Ukraine right now for squad. Next Vuhledar. I think it’s important to learn, understand and play the game with this historical information as a sign of respect to the men caught in the action. I do not make the maps to glorify the conflict but as a respect to the men who have died and to learn what it’s like to be in their shoes.

There purpose is to give the players a deep understanding of what it’s like to actually be a soldier, to have some humanity and humility for the men who are fighting on both sides.

@@SnoutBaron Not really and that is a fair point. But the way this situation makes me feel has taught me that that probably wasn't right either. As a European it is simply very hard to personally see so many broken Ukrainian families that have fled the conflict and then see people play a video game depicting the literal cause of these real peoples suffering. I have met single mothers, teenagers without parents and kids. If I had been exposed to middle-eastern refugees to the same extent during those wars I think I would have had a similar opinion I have now but I simply wasn't. I don't think it means you have bad morals if you play this game but I do think it means you might not be very exposed to the gravity of the situation in Ukraine and if you were to be exposed to it personally I doubt you would think the game is very amusing.

Getting offended at this is like getting offended at the swastika or red star. They are parts of history and are what different factions used to represent themselves, by censoring them you censor what the factions actually stood for.
Tbh swastikas are complicated because in some countries they are basically illegal and could land you in trouble for "possesion", if you for example download a ww2 game with swastikas in it
The difference is whether or not the symbol is used for historical representation, for accuracy, for memes or for actual endorsement.
If the game were about WWII, I’d have no problem with swastikas on things. Google “WWII Luftwaffe,” if you see a plane without the swastika is hat been sanitized. The Hammer and Sickle is also fun for Go To Gulag memes when playing as Russians (dropping an FAB 5000 on someone in War Thunder), and if playing as Russians against Germans I’ll drop a Za Rodina (like other Ukrainians did when they encircled the 6th Army at the end of the Battle of Stalingrad).
If you’re flying the symbols because you identify with the regime that flew them, however, get in the bin.
@@ZealothPLtrue but I think a lot of countries have gotten rid of/changed those laws to allow for artistic usage. I know Germany did so around 5-10 years ago, and I think they were one of the most strict about the law.
@@sam8404 they did? I remember a custom Warcraft 3 map had a silly weapon with swastika on its icon (basically threw mein kampf books at enemies to stun them) and it was all plastered with warnings how it was a serious crime to download it in Germany (but obviously it was like 20 years ago)

I don't know the exact wording of the law but I assume things like you described would not be covered even now, as Swastikas are not really required to be able to tell a story in Warcraft (unlike games like Wolfenstein or CoD).
