we played this song a million or more times from 64 to 76 when I quit. Some say we were better that the Safaris but no one can match them on drums. Love the song...it was The Music Icon of the 60s.....and still lives today, denoting the power and energy that came forth from our generation!
Well, there can only be ONE original in THIS group! Not enough grey hair on the other three. But he is for sure, the original guitar player. Even after all these years, and doubtless, countless performances, his original style still shines through. Bravo!
This song was recorded just up the street from the first house I ever lived in. I kid you all not, it was recorded in a town Called Rancho Cucamonga on the street corner of Archibald and Haven where a flower shop called "Archibald flowers" now exists. It happened before I lived near there though.
I was lucky enough to meet Ron Wilson in the summer of 1988. My group was playing in Ventura. It just so happened to be a oldies band. We played Wipe Out during one set half way thru the night. On the break I was approached outside by this guy in a Hawaiian shirt. He said 'Hi I'm Ron Wilson.....great job. I was dumfounded!!! Very nice guy. Left us way too soon, but made his mark in music history.
thanks to you guys for sharing this great piece of our history with the community and with the "modern" kids of our new generation. You were great when I grew up and you still are. Thank you so much for making this music video available to us all. Lancelot
THIS is the drum pattern for Wipeout that will be played at my funeral, just like for my amazing cousin Bill. You should have been there. Who laughs at a funeral? We did.
Such a pivotal chunk of surf music and 60's pop culture. It was a reference for most garage bands. Thanks for posting it! I truly pity people who know nothing of the fun and cool things about growing up in the 60's. Today is genuinely boring and empty.
I was in 4th grade and we would sit at counter of a soda shop and drum it out while we drank our drinks and played it over and over on the juke box for a $0.05
few days ago played this song on acoustic guitar for my friends and they liked it so much, they were actually dancing and laughing, and I'm tellin' ya, this song has some crazy energy in it...
summer of '63 being a lifeguard at the local swimming pool! played this constantly-the girls 'shimmied' to it on the way to the diving board! in central Texas!
I used to play this song every morning on the way to work - at the Post office. I was the fastest worker on record! I could get my route sorted, delivered and be BACK before the next one left. I worked to this pace all day, every day. It was AWESOME!
This was one of my friend's 45s. I didn't know/forgot that Surfer Joe was on the B-side. We loved that song too, but of course, Wipe out is the classic.
My parents and I hear this song a lot when we eat dinner @ PCH Grill. It was heard on Bart's alarm clock from the episode Cape Feare which was seen on The Simpsons.
I was in High school when this came out and I can remember the guys would bang on the side of their desk with their two fingers and think it sounded like the drums to the song. That was a big thing for a while. Its funny to think back about that now.
found a ton of old 45 singles under my house in a box, there were 2 copies of this song and Surfer Joe in great condition. No clue who left them there but it was a pleasant surprise.
I want to play this song when I wipe out when I'm surfing and drowning and dying, and this'd just be blasting in the background while I'm flailing everywhere spasmodically. Cooooooool!
A staple at high school dances back in the day! It was also the test of a drummer's skill: to maintain the intensity, hit the accents right, do the footwork and keep the groove going.
Whenever I hear this song, I remember the days I spent as a kid watching Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez running, with the Babe Ruth signed baseball, away from "The Beast" in the movie, "The Sandlot". It's funny how music can help you to hold onto childhood memories.
this sonq reminds me of a friend he passed away 2weeks ago he was such a good singer look him up on youtube Marvin Roulette! rip buddy sadly missed but never forgotten
So GLAD to see the Original Guys still out Playing... these guys didn't get their Due Credit... most people think the Ventures did this song --- I think in all likelyhood, that when this song first came out, the guys who would become "the Ventures", probably looked at each other and said... "That's what Our Band should sound like."... and they went on to make far more money than these guys, playing this Surfaris song, and lots like it... These guys are Great!
I would like to inform you guys that your music has inspired bands such as Beach Fossils, Girls Names, Real Estate, Ducktails, and Surfer Blood. thank you so much.
On this day in 1965 {May 8th} the Surfaris performed "Wipe Out" on the syndicated television program 'Hollywood A G-Go'... Two years earlier on June 22nd, 1963 it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #2 {for 1 week} and spent 16 weeks on the Top 100... The record's B-side, Surfer Joe", also charted, it reached #62... And three years later on July 30th, 1966 "Wipe Out" re-entered the Top 100 and this time it peaked at #16 and spent 14 weeks on the Top 100...
They recorded this 46 years ago when they were barely out of their teens. We had real music then. Find Duane Eddy's Rebel Rouser for more greats! And Tequila by the Champs.
This song doesnt even need lyrics, its a legend. Never die.
Awesome...Most recognized drum solo in the world, The whole band sounds fantastic. 5 easy stars from me. Keep the Surf Music alive!!
This song still rocks.
Even after these years.
+JustForBrieLarson You got that right!

Takes me back to the old days at school and the battle of the bands.

Brilliant! Just as good today as it was back then.
Probably most powerful instrumental from last hundred years!
Just cool for the drum solo alone. Probably the one song that all but musically defines surfing and surf music in the 60s

Yes the Golden Age of Instrumentals into at least the mid 60s.
The era was revived in the late 70s with all the new surf bands
This is one great tune. The drummer rocks, and the guitar is funky. Class track..........
This was one of my friend's 45s. I didn't know/forgot that Surfer Joe was on the B-side. We loved that song too, but of course, Wipe out is the classic.

This song brings me back. Makes me want to pull out my old vinyl collection. I think I have this on a B-side with Surfer Joe on the A-side.
