    My kids first year of band was the 4th grade and the brass is very much beginners. Give them time it is very hard and my kids started with a cheap flute and a used Saxophone and many lessons with private teachers. Every year it gets better and soon we had to buy much more expensive instruments. My daughter was so good on flute and piano that the owner of the music studio hired her to teach beginners by age 14 . My son by age 15 was also hired to teach Saxophone and piano to beginners too. My son was in Marching band, Symphonic band and Jazz Band. He was First Chair Sax player and my daughter was in Symphonic and also asked to play in the Orchestra and she was First Chair Flute. Both kids were fantastic musicians. They were chosen best in the State. So it was a great experience. Music is wonderful for young people and it does wonders for their intelligence. All of their activities helped get them scholarships and other honors.

    I've been to MANY of these school programs! My parents sat through many as well. It can be very hard to listen to the ear splitting high pitched "squeeks" when adults in the communities support the children of the community by showing up, taking time to sit and be there, it encourages, lifts up, and let's the children know that their community supports them. It's one of the best uses of positive reinforcement there can be!

      My kids’ music teacher in primary school had every kid playing something. The concerts were a mix of talent and persistence. Mrs Martin encouraged the kids by performing interesting pieces, with whatever instrument she was learning. Competed at Grade 3 level in cello at a national eisteddfod. Her occasional squeaks let the kids know that performance doesn’t have to be flawless to be meaningful.

    She's got it. I hope that she gets a lot of support and encouragement from her family and friends and continues drumming. When I was a lad back in grade school in the 1960's, my buddies and I thought Wipeout was the coolest tune ever and we would play it with out hands on our book cases we had to carry to and from school.

    This little girl is awesome, I won't take that away. But you know who else is awesome? That band director. That guy gets major kudos for letting his students get out there and delve into things. The whole scenario is just great.

    Look at her face at 1:50. The count is "One, two, three, four, GO." She's wondering what he did with the down beat. What a sweetie. I would have been rolling my eyes at that age. She'll go far in this world.

      Rob Bourassa I think you have to be more aggressive when playing this song on the drums it would sound A LOT better

    • @robbourassaguitarist
      @robbourassaguitarist 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      You are right but It's hard to be aggressive when you're having to play the song at half the tempo to accommodate the orchestra. She'll do fine.

      Yeah, but they're most likely beginner band students, so we should cut them some slack. This is pretty much what beginner band students sound like.

    Great job. Her parents, and band director, should be proud of her. I know how she probably felt. I had a tuba solo during a junior high concert, which was introducing parents to each of the instruments, and their sounds. I had not been playing but about 3 months. I was scared as all get out. I got rave reviews from my director, who told the audience I had only been playing a very short time, after we were done with the piece. My hat is off to this young lady.

    • @ThickUP
      @ThickUP 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Mike Hunt play open hand, allows your right hand more freedom and gives you the option of absurdly loud snare hits if you need them. It means you don't have to switch the kit around every time you show up at a gig either.
      Also don't blame it all on the orchestra @SXI96, that conductor clearly has no understanding of music. He didn't recognize that there's a pick-up, his count-in wasn't in the same bpm as the song, and he SAID "GO" ON BEAT ONE! Wh-Who does that?!?!
