  • Welcome to the incredible story of the lost songs of St Kilda.

Nearly a century ago, the last 36 residents were evacuated from the most remote part of the British Isles, St Kilda, an isolated archipelago off the beautiful and rugged western coast of Scotland.
After 86 years, the music of St Kilda has been discovered, recorded in a Scottish care home by Trevor Morrison, an elderly man who was taught piano by an inhabitant of St Kilda. Heard by the outside world for the first time these haunting melodies offer a last link to the so-called ‘island on the edge of the world’.

I heard this for the first time last night driving home from a business trip. I usually do not react this way, but this particular music has reduced me to tears each time I hear it.. I think as we age, there is always that nagging sense of loss, of echoes of people and things one can no longer hear or see.. This wonderful man has captured that sense of a lost home and a time which you can never return. There are many of us who feel the depth of his message. What wonderful music! I prefer it just with the piano.

I spent a total of 12 months on St Kilda whilst serving with the Royal Artillery in the late
    sixties.
Wonderful place, although it’s years ago I often think of
the fantastic time I spent exploring this Beautiful Island.
I’m very pleased it’s now under the care of the National Trust.

Heartbreaking and wistful. I prefer this original piano version to the orchestration. The simplicity of Mr. Morrison's harmonization better suits the stark beauty of the melody and the landscape that inspired it.

The commentators are correct that there were no keyboards on St. Kilda other than perhaps a small organ brought by one of the itinerant preachers. Here's the most probable explanation of how all this evolved: Trevor's teacher probably remembered the melodies sung by the women as they spun, ditties the children made up for their games, chants the men sang as they went about their work. Either the music teacher or Trevor or an unknown person put the harmonies to the melodies. So Trevor's performances in his care home were the first arrangements and the orchestrations are additional arrangements of the lovely songs. Whether this is how it evolved, or the teacher made up melodies that reminded him of his childhood on the islands, aren't we all lucky they were preserved on the CD? Thank you, Trevor, and Stuart, and Fiona, and Decca!

Trevor was on Bute during WW2 and got piano lessons from an itinerant music teacher from St Kilda. There was no piano on St Kilda as the church forbade music.

    Great footage but:
Enlighten me, which music instruments were on St Kilda during its occupation? certainly NO pianos and I doubt any others too, who wrote the manuscript? no one because there wasn't any.
Unless you can prove otherwise I suspect this is a money making scam.

I don’t know about instruments but what I do know is that Trevor Morrison was taught these songs when he was 10 years old by someone from St Kilda who moved to where he was living. He had forgotten about these songs for the majority of his life but when he was put in a care home, there was a piano there and he’d just start to play these. Sometimes he would even wake up in the middle of night to write the notes down so he doesn’t forget. It was either him or someone from the care home who sent it to musicians as he was the only one in the world that remembers/knows these songs.
