    What do you think of my Composition Error? Does it ruin the photo?

      I don't think it ruins the photo.
      In fact, pointing out what you think you could improve with the composition sets an awesome example for all photographers at every skill level. Self reflection like this is one of the most important skills in progressing not just in photography but life in general.

      I don't think it ruins it at all Mark. Fantastic work.

      Not in my mind, my eyes go from the splash of yellow in the foreground, along the small white buildings and then around the hills in the background back to the actual lighthouse.

    • @wilmerkrusen7501
      @wilmerkrusen7501 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I often appreciate the compositional value of separating key objects within a photograph, especially when pointed out. In this photo however it isn't really a concern to me based on how the hills on the left narrow to a point and into a horizontal line that continues across the lighthouse. I believe it works as is.

    I agree with you completely on giving yourself a bit of extra space to crop. Sometimes I don't notice something until I get home, and cropping lets me accent it or get rid of it. Where a bit of extra space around the edges also helps is if you find a picture isn't quite level. Even a rotation of a degree or two can result in quite a bit of loss at the edges. If your starting image was the crop you wanted, you can't get it back. If you zoom out a little bit, the rotation and subsequent crop is no harm, no foul.
    Also, a week or two ago I mentioned your preference for radial filters versus my preference for the adjustment brush, so I'll take that whole section of the video as a personal reply to me--thanks! You did make some points that are well taken, and I'll have to play with it some more. One thing I did realize is the Lightroom version could come into play here. I just upgraded from LR6, which has the various range masks. Previously, if I had an irregular shape to modify, the brush made it much easier to avoid making an unwanted adjustment near that shape. Now I can apply a range mask and avoid modifying the background. I don't think I'm going to stop using the adjustment brush, but certainly you've given me some ideas for when the radial filter will be a better option.

    I pretty much used the adjustment brush but you brought a different perspective and enlightment on using Radial Filter. Never thought of using that to its advantage. I need to watch this video again. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Have a great blessed day.

    5:11 I know you just said you don't like to use the brush, but instead of a grad filter, a brush on the ice plant foreground would give more texture and add so much more than a boring grad. Try it Mark, try this edit again by haphazardly applying your exposure adjustments with a brush instead of a grad and you'll see.
    Nice edits on a nice shot. I might have put a bit of dehaze on the distant hills (editor's choice on this though), but aside from that and the foreground brush I think you nailed it.

    That is interesting you say about the crop tool. I have thinking about what e.g. Thomas Heaton does out in the field. He decides that this photograph should be best in 4x5 and then he changes the settings in the camera. I have wondered why doesn´t he crop that at home instead. I mean it is hard to add something when you are back at home. I do as you do. Take some extra meters on every side so I can play with that in the computer instead.

    Another succint and useful video as always Mark. Thanks a lot. I have to look at images as critically as you do and figure out what to enhance. I feel I know and use all the same tools but more haphazardly. I get lucky sometimes but with a scientific approach maybe more images can be saved. 😃
    Was the picture a panorama ? When you went into the crop tool it looked like a non rectangular image.
    I often travel with only my 24-70 lens and compensate for not having a wider lens by taking multiple shots and stitching in Lightroom. But I have a niggling suspicion that its suboptimal.
    I also struggle with picking the right projection to use in the panorama panel (spherical, cylindrical or perspective) and often find I dont have enough shots at one end or the other due to how the image compresses and renders in the panorama. If only I had a fee more images or panned up and down as well ad sideways at one end, etc.
    What are your views on using panorama to replicate a wide lens ? Also any tips on how to setup the panorama to have a nice croppable image at the end would be appreciated. Perhaps there's a future video possible for this?

    It is so reassuring to see that I'm on the right path in my edit workflow. I use the tools you pointed out in today's video all the time. Sometimes, even if I don't think a tool might do any good, I try it. That is the case with the calibration. It doesn't hurt to slide it right and left to see what happens to your photo. In fact, I re-arranged the order of my tools and placed calibration as the very first one. It is sometimes very helpful for me to see the impact on my edits before I do anything else. I was particularly intrigued by your distinction of the adjustment brush vs. the radial filter. I can easily see the advantage in a structure, such as the lighthouse in your photo. Thanks, as always, for another informative video.
